Johnson at one time had average above Bradman in Perth test against India. :p
Seriously he is an aggressive player who plays his shots just like Gilly did down the order while Broad has not shown any offensive bone in his batting till date.

Broad has shown his offensive qualities, when hes been with the tailenders he gone and had a swing not as aggressive as Johnson but he definetely can.

Kinda of why hes perfect at 8. Teams usually think when they get past our 7 they can relax but then they bang into Johnson. And one of Lee/Hauritz will be after him, our lower order batting is one thing I am confident with.

gilly was class apart,i think its insulting to the legend comparing him with johnson.

I think Aussies should drop defensive approach of filling batting till 7. It will not work going in with 4 specialist bowlers one of whom will be Hauritz.

With the form of our batters I would not be confident dropping a batter. Haddin is very unpredictable and isn't consistent enough to bat at 6. Ponting's form has been questionable, Hughes is an unknown, Katich although producing a good knock has been exposed over here as has Clarke.

So I would not want to be dropping a batter with those problems unsorted, although I don't know how much North will add with his form so far.

Broad aint bad with the bat but it doesn't make it a great tail. Johnson, Hauritz and possibly Lee - now theres a tail.

Johnson could possibly bat at seven, he has the talent to do it. But Australia's batting hasn't looked that great so they won't take the risk.

Then why aint Hodge playing? He has the experience of playing in England and can bowl off spin as well.

Because the selectors don't like Hodge. They have this idea in there head that he isn't good. It's obvious that they don't watch domestic cricket but hey, why do the selectors need to waste there time on that rubbish? Keep selecting Watson and shunning Hodge and we'll be right.

That's why it sucks that Watson isn't fit. He's a decent 4th quickie as he showed in India and his batting is certainly as good as Haddin's, even a bit better most of the time. Then we could play Hauritz with that extra bit of bowling backup just in case he got tonked. But with no Watson, McDonald is the only other option and I can't see McDonald getting the nod as he hasn't played in either of the warmups. And his batting doesn't have the quality required. So North will have to do at #6 I guess and hopefully Hauritz bowls well and 3 fast bowlers do the job :upray

But I doubt the Australians play an extra bowler until the England guys have proven they are batting really well. The Aussie mantra is: They aren't scared of things they haven't been on the receiving end of. Eg. they played Watson as an extra bowling option against India because they knew the Indian batsmen have hurt them before and it would be hard going on the Indian pitches getting wickets. It would take some big scores by the Pommie boys in this series to get the Aussies playing an extra bowler. They aren't worried about taking wickets yet.

In theory Watson is the ideal choice for 6. But so far he hasn't shown much with the bat at all and has a serious weakness against spin. This isn't the series to be testing if his batting is up to this level or not. It is a shame he was injured during the SA series as that was the perfect time to test him.

At least Hussey is back. If he can keep batting like he did yesterday then Aussies have enough resistance in lower order to get those extra 100 runs.

Watson is pretty useless with the ball. Not to mention the fact that he's barely played enough domestic cricket yet he almost walks into the team where as Noffke works his ass off weekly to be one of the best all-rounders in our domestic competition and not even get a second look.
