The Melbourne track, is contained in a park, the layout smooth and flowing, with no 90 degree street corners to break the speed. It runs clockwise around a lake, and the scenery is breathtaking, the circuit well liked by the drivers.

As befits a temporary course, grip levels are expected to vary significantly during the course of the event and Melbourne?s notoriously fickle weather will add to the unpredictability as all 22 competitors line up on Bridgestone tyres for the start of the first race. After months of speculation and countless miles of testing this is where the reality bites with 58 laps of the 5.303 km track. The two dry tyres which will be used for this event are the soft and the medium compounds, both of which have to be used during the course of the race.

Defending champion Fernando Alonso will be driving for his new team Mclaren Mercedes and it will be interesting to see how he performs.

After five months when testing provided the only action for Formula 1 fans, the 2007 season is ready to roll and Panasonic Toyota Racing heads to Albert Park in Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix this weekend, the first of 17 races this year. Toyota is celebrating 50 years in motorsport in 2007. The team is looking to begin this landmark year with a result to be proud of on the streets of Albert Park. Jarno and Siddharth have had a busy winter testing programme with the new TF107 and two days of hard work in Jerez last week finally put the finishing touches to their preparations. Last season Ralf Schumacher was on the podium in Melbourne 12 months ago and the team are motivated to score another positive result this time around.

May a milestone(a race win) comes for a milestone(50 years) Gud luck.. But seriously, i am backing up Ferrari though :D Go Ferrari!!!!! :happy

I am backing Jenson Button. He's the best driver after Schumi

Love the Race Preview there M Vaughan! Should be a good race and hope you can get a good position on the grid in qualifiying :)

Hoepfully you can get in there and get Toyota their first ever win, if not, then make sure Lewis does!

I will give it my best shot. Thanks for the support.

Anyways I will be posting the details of the final pre-season testing (held at Jerez). Mclaren, Renault, Williams, BMW Sauber, Toro Rosso, and Red Bull Racing were present there as well so you will get some idea on the improvement and performance of the teams and their cars.

Jerez testing - final testing before the season starts

25 February 2007

Off the pace

Toyota F1 Racing were one of seven teams that conducted
pre-season testing at the Circuito Permanente de Jerez this
past weekend. They were joined by Red Bull Racing, Scuderia
Toro Rosso, Renault, Williams F1, BMW Sauber and the new
look Mclaren Mercedes.

However both Jarno Trulli and Siddharth Kanjilal's TF107s were
off the pace which shows that there is still some work that
needs to be done if Toyota chooses to be competitive this
season.

The testing was dominated by the two Mclarens as Lewis Hamilton
set the quickest lap of 1:16.455 with Fernando Alonso managing to
come second by just three-hundredth of a second. Robert Kubica
and Nico Rosberg were impressive in their BMW and Williams
respectively although the Renaults were disappointing with Giancarlo
Fisichella coming sixth fastest with a quickest lap of 1:17.920, almost
one and a half second behind Hamilton and Alonso.

For Toyota, Jarno Trulli came eight with a fastest lap of 1:18.441, close to
two seconds behind the top runner. Siddharth Kanjilal was tenth with 1:18.455.
Both drivers accepted that their cars were quite off the pace.

"The Mclarens have shown massive improvement in terms of pace and if have
managed to get the reliability factor also sorted out from last season then they
have a good shout at the constructor's and driver's championships this year,"
said Jarno Trulli.

"We dont quite have the pace to challenge them but we still have to do some
finishing touches on the car and I am confident that we can atleast close the gap
during the season."

Team-mate Siddharth Kanjilal said the straight line pace of the Mclarens and the
BMWs worked wonders on this Jerez track.

"They were able to fly ahead on those long straights as their straight line speed is
just too good. However we could and should have done better ourselves. This
definately wasnt our best display so over the next few days we will have to work
really hard in order to be more competitive this season," said Kanjilal.

Arrival in Australia

I reached Melbourne on Wednesday morning before the race weekend.
I was joined by my girlfriend, Vinitha Moses, my agent, Michael Law
and some people from the Toyota pit team.
After an afternoon's rest I headed to the track where our test drivers
had been testing the car that entire day. I went and checked on the
test results. Jarno was scheduled to land tonight and both of us would
get to drive on the Albert Park track tomorrow.

The next day both myself and Jarno tested the cars ourselves. We were
decently pleased with the handling although our pace was still not quite
enough. Nevertheless, both of us were confident of a good race.
That night, myself, Jarno and Franck Montagny went for a night tour of
Melbourne. As per team procedures and rules, consumption of Alcohol was
not permitted between Thursday and till the end of the race on Sunday.

Friday was the official day of testing for all the teams. I reached the
track pretty late and as I entered my team's garage some of the other cars were
already ready to begin testing. By the time my car was setup and I
myself was ready to drive, BMW's Robert Kubica had set the fastest lap of 1:25.874.

On my free lap I dint feel comfortable with the grip of the car, probably
because of the work done on the car after yesterday's testing in order to
get more pace.

Anyways, I went back straight into the pits and got the car set to the
previous setup. This mainly involved in adjusting the slope and slide of
the wing and adjusting the ride height of the car.

By the time I was back on track, Fernando Alonso was leading the timesheets
with 1:25.606. The car was feeling a lot better now and I went ahead to set my
first laptime of 1:28.000, some way off the Mclaren's time. I decided to give it
another attempt after taking a "break lap" in between and in my next try posted
a lap time of 1:25.729, which was fourth fastest at that time and .310 seconds
ahead of my team-mate Jarno Trulli.

I headed back into the pits. Soon the Ferraris took over first and second spot as
Felipe Massa clocked 1:25.413 and Kimi Raikkonen did a 1:25.482.

Robert Kubica improved on his previous time to take third at 1:25.550.
In my next two attempts I wasnt able to improve my best lap time and could only
manage a best time of 1:25.921.

The session continued as Felipe Massa once again beat his own best time of 1:25.144.
Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso were not far behind at second and third respectively.

I did manage to break my own quickest time later on, as I put up a 1:25.580.
But both myself and Jarno were never able to challenge the Mclarens and the Ferraris.

good luck i reckon 8th? maybe just into the points

Matt, how would he be able to get pics if it wasn't on PC? :p

Nice practice session and love the pics. Very good layout of presentation :clap

Good luck in Qualifiying...

We ran a few minor changes on the car for the evening practice session. Just something to try and reduce the amount of under-steer that I had experienced coming out of some of the corners.

The evening session started and I went onto the track early along with Spyker?s Christjian Albers. I let him pull away in front so that I wouldn?t face any unnecessary delays during my timed lap.

I set a lap time of 1:27.624, taking provisional first place, ahead of Christjian Albers by 1.532 seconds. In my second attempt I clocked 1:26.901 before heading back into the pits.

I did improve further to post a timing of 1:25.822 in my fifth attempt and by the end of the session had done a 1:25.700, which was better than the fastest time I had set in the morning practice session (1:25.729). I had also outdone my team-mate Jarno Trulli who managed a fastest laptime of 1:25.829.

However the session belonged to BMW Sauber as Nick Heidfeld finished top of the timesheets with 1:25.012 while Robert Kubica clocked 1:25.152 which was third quickest. Ferrari?s Felipe Massa, who was fastest in the morning, took second place with a 1:25.149. Lewis Hamilton would have been disappointed with his fastest laptime of 1:25.711, which was only tenth fastest, and more importantly was behind me.
