Warne-Muralidaran Trophy (Australia in Sri Lanka) Aug-Sep 2011

Another spinner bites the dust.

Be interesting to see what happens if Lyon gets smashed around in this test match.

They are so used to just changing spin bowlers while giving them no time to settle, I'm betting Beer will be back in the team by the end of the tour.:yes

Main part of the side I was after was Copeland and Khawaja so I'm happy. Makes you wonder what on earth got Beer into the side in the first place if he's been ditched for a guy with 4 FC games. Hopefully SOK does well in the only match before the SA tour to finally get the spot he deserved.

SOK has been the best player in the last two A matches that he's played.

I guess if he played badly that might help his chances of being selected.

I think Lyon's got an advantage over Beer because Copeland is playing ie. someone that can bowl steadily. Copeland might bowl 25 overs a day here - he will be doing a traditional spinners role and Lyon will get to come on a float his offies without an expectation that he'll need to bowl a lot of overs. If Beer were playing, he's a more natural workhorse of a spinner (been compared to Paul Harris a lot), if Beer got attacked then his natural style will be disrupted more than Lyon's as I see it.

Glad we didn't pick Beer and Copeland, that might have been a bit too steady for my liking. Lyon and Siddle would have been too loose. So it really came down to Lyon+Copeland vs Beer+Siddle. Being the incumbents, Beer and Siddle might feel a little harshly done by, but there's a new regime in town so they can't expect too much loyalty.

Liked this quote from Clarke:
If we think the quicks are going to be our best solution to take 20 wickets then we have to go with three fast bowlers no matter what Sri Lanka do

I like it because there was some talk that if Sri Lanka played 3 spinners, we should play 2, but that's not right. Sri Lanka would only be playing 3 spinners because they see spin as the Aussies weakness and the best chance to get them out.

And I'm relieved that Usman gets his chance at #6 - Marsh didn't really deserve it as much. Of course #6 won't be his best spot, but I'm sure he won't mind too much right now.

I'm a bit disappointed he isn't at 3 or 4, but like you say I'm sure hes not too worried. Clarke and Hussey seem like quite an ideal 5 and 6 to me. Clarke hasn't really done a lot ever since he went up to number 4 anyway.

I take it you are going off the tour match? Lyon overall FC economy is better than Beer although a very small sample size (although that didn't stop the selectors picking him). Lyon OD economy is 4.4 which suggest he has good control while being attacking. I would say he has the ability to attack while keeping it tight, we should soon find out although always hard to judge when a spinner is making his debut against one of the top teams against spin.

Wasn't it partially Warnie's fault? He started carrying on about picking Beer. SOK should have been there a long time ago. Heck, Hauritz should still be there if anything.

Seemed that way, just shows you how big of a joke our selection panel was to take the advise of someone that doesn't have an official capacity with CA. I could see why they dropped Hauritz but the replacements have been completely wrong to the point we would have been better off sticking with Hauritz.

Damn, Hughes gone sounds like that ball was a ripper from cricinfo commentary. Maybe we finally have a sub-continent wicket that isn't made for batting.

Pretty tricky pitch at the moment, balls keeping low too. A bit of bad luck for Hughes, but the bowler had also chosen a good line to bowl to him.

Randiv has such a weird action. Seems like a tiny delivery stride with little pivot and hardly puts any back into it. Though the bounce he gets is obvious and perhaps he has simply optimised himself for height. They haven't looked overly comfortable against him, but I wonder if it's just a matter of time before they get used to it.

Herath has been dangerous. His lower, whippier arm means he gets a bit of turn and has presented serious lbw problems for the right handers.

Good sesh. Watson produced a flurry of early shots, before a riposte. Ponting and Clarke were more measured and had some close calls, but still produced some good shots.

^Seems about right. Both wickets were from pretty good balls - so Aussie fans can't complain too much :p - Hughes fans especially. Notice the cricinfo commentary called that Clarke LBW appeal in the last few overs 'plumb'...might have hit him on line with off stump perhaps, but maybe he was slightly outside. Certainly not plumb.

Going to be some hard grinding ahead.

Yeah I was going from the tour match and the articles written from them, but yeah maybe that's true. As you say though, neither have a massive body of work behind them.

Sure was, the ball before was wide and didn't bounce. This one bounced a mile and caught him by surprise, he was trying to block it outside off stump before it crept on him and caught his bat.
