Everything was going perfectly until this happened.

Yeah if that happens you're screwed. Try and avoid it if you can.

Also if you want to get really high, you want your top ones in the very bottom corners, not in the middle like you have your 1024 there. It'll make more sense as you play more.

My one game where I got 2048 I got a cool 41 K, haven't really played since then. Beat that!
