World Cup 2011 - Group B

Standings

1. England 5
2. West Indies 4
3. South Africa 4
4. India 3
-----------------------
5. Ireland 2
6. Bangladesh 2
7. Netherlands 0

Laughable that England have the lowest NRR of any team with a positive NRR

Dare I suggest this result would have gone down well with event organisers who would want South Africa, England, India and probably West Indies to be top four and this would undo some of the damage done by England losing to Ireland...........................

That narrow win may well make it VERY HARD for anyone but those four to qualify, especially if India finish the job off against Ireland. Nearest teams to Ireland would be on four points to Ireland's two having played the same number of games with both South Africa and West Indies yet to play Ireland.

If India win today, they should make it to the top of the table based on a higher NRR achieved by the slightly better win against Bangladesh. Its going to be fun seeing the rankings that each team would achieve in this group. Because with New Zealand most likely to be Team 4 from the other group, the group topper might get to face NZ which makes their path to the semifinals a little more easier than if they face AUS/SL/PAK.

England have now lost to two of the three weaker sides in the group, makes them very vulnerable having only picked up three points against the two of the three top sides they have played.

GROUP B TABLE

1. India P4 PTS 7 (NRR 0.99)
2. West Indies P4 PTS 6 (NRR 2.21)
3. ENGLAND P5 PTS 5 (NRR 0.01)
4. South Africa P3 PTS 4 (NRR 1.75)
----------------------------------------
5. Bangladesh P4 PTS 4 (NRR -1.24)
6. Ireland P4 PTS 2 (NRR -0.44)
7. Holland P4 PTS 0 (NRR -2.73)

REMAINING FIXTURES

IND vs SAF
BAN vs HOL
IRE vs SAF
ENG vs WIN
IRE vs HOL
BAN vs SAF
IND vs WIN

England basically need results to go their way, whether they win the game against West Indies or not, although winning the game against West Indies would mean Bangladesh beating Holland wouldn't put Bangladesh through. As it happens Strauss has won 5 of the 8 games he has played against West Indies, but he is running out of workable options with Anderson not bowling well, Yardy being next to useless who seems to be a supersub fielder (Shight), Tredwell picked as a spinner isn't being played.

Both Prior and Collingwood aren't doing much with the bat. Plan A failed, Plan B is much the same as Plan A and I'm sure Plan C is just Plan A/B with a different player or two :rolleyes

ASSUMING both Ireland and Bangladesh beat Holland, not improbable, then that would mean England need to get at the very least a point off West Indies. I would anticipate South Africa beating Ireland and Bangladesh.

Bottom line is England are in deep trouble, really need to beat West Indies and luck may be on their side. Having lost to Ireland and Bangladesh you have to feel they don't deserve to reach the QFs, but this format was designed to give the top eight Test teams every chance of avoiding the upset the last format produced.........................

What a group this is!

West Indies beat Bangladesh, who beat Ireland and England, and England defeats South Africa, and ties India, and South Africa defeats West Indies.

Brilliant.

West Indies beat Bangladesh, who beat Ireland and England, and England defeats South Africa, and ties India, and South Africa defeats West Indies.
and are on their way losing to India. :D

And SA snatches victory from India. SA should top the group now. :yes

The opens the group really nicely.
Now all that remains is the twist in the tale. And it is not impossible ! The Proteas losing to BD and Ireland should make this Group a hotch-potch.

Didnt notice one thing. If England beat West Indies and India beat West Indies, then both England and India can go through (considering that SA will end up on atleast 8 points at a minimum). Even if Bangladesh win their next two games and end up on 8 points, England and India can still go through if they win their respective games vs West Indies (which means SA, Bangladesh, India and England will qualify and West Indies lose out). FAB GROUP THIS IS!!! Anything is possible.

I'm hoping Bangladesh surprises South Africa, that's the only way India stands a chance to finish at the top. I can't really see Ireland defeating the Proteas.

I feel that both BD and Ire can surprise/ stun the Proteas. If that happens, its going to be great.

You guys are all clutching at straws! We've had our mandatory loss against England and we should finish on top.

If Bangladesh continue to massacre the dutch then the game between England and West Indies could be key. If England lose then they are out, if West Indies lose then a defeat to India could see West Indies out - although that would depend on run rates

2. West Indies P4 PTS 6 (RR 2.21)
3. South Africa P4 PTS 6 (RR 1.35)
4. England P5 PTS 5 (RR 0.01)
5. Bangladesh P4 PTS 4 (RR -1.24)

Key fixtures

WIN : WIN vs ENG, WIN vs IND
SAF : IRE vs SAF, BAN vs SAF
ENG : WIN vs ENG
BAN : BAN vs HOL, BAN vs SAF

South Africa are surely safe, lose one maybe, lose both is unlikely.

If Bangladesh beat Holland then England need at least a point off West Indies.

If West Indies lose both games then they are vulnerable to a game of run rates against Bangladesh and maybe other sides.

If Bangladesh could beat South Africa as well as Holland then they would be through
