Your Nation's XI in 5 Years Time

I would go with sifter132 test side, predicting who the spinner is as good as winning the lottery. Certainly has lots of bowling options if Watson and Henriques fire with the bat.

ODI I would go
Hughes
Warner
Watson
Clarke/Pomersbach don't know how Clarke's form will be in the ODI arena
Ferguson
Henriques
Ronchi
Steven Smith/Heal
Johnson/Cameron
Siddle/Hazelwood
Hilfenhaus

If Pomersbach is in the ODI side then he probably would be the 3, Watson 4 if Clarke isn't in there. Bowling pretty tricky as none of them having really performed in the OD arena.

Yeah something like that would be pretty good. The scary thing is that most of the bowlers we've picked are already playing for us - only Lee, Clark and Bracken remain of the 'old guys'...who knows for how long. So our bowling unit will be developing for the next 5 years by default - they will need to play.

And I'm really picking Watson as a batsman only for 5 years time. I can't see him bowling at top speed that far down the track - poor guy, he's had a rough time with injuries. But at least his batting improves a little more everytime he has to stop bowling. I think he's a natural to succeed Ponting in the #3 spot in both forms - good technique who can stonewall if needed for a bit, but scores freely too and plays all the shots.

I have a weird feeling that Sehwag is going to call it a day when he hits 35...

So:

Murali Vijay
Gautam Gambhir
Subramanium Badrinath
Ajinkya Rahane
Cheteshwar Pujara
Manoj Tiwary
MS Dhoni
Piyush Chawla
Ishant Sharma
Dhawal Kulkarni
Pradeep Sangwan

Subs: Dinesh Karthik (WK Backup and batsman), Robin Uthappa, Virat Kohli, Mohnish Parmar, Sreesanth, Sid Trivedi.

If Dhoni is still captain by then I think he won't want to be keeping, captaining, and batting all the time. So probably take Murali Vijay out and put KKD in, and he'd don the gloves.

Kohli hasn't impressed me all that much at all tbh, I saw some bits and pieces of the U-19s and yeah he was good, but I think he'll end up going down the Kaif route.

Nice thread. Let me provide a off-the-top-of-my-head batting line-up:

1. Virender Sehwag
2. Gautam Gambhir
3. Chetashwara Pujara
4. Rohit Sharma
5. Manoj Tiwary
6. MS Dhoni*
7. KKD Karthik+
8. Piyush Chawla
9. Zaheer Khan (he'll probably be doing a Vaas-y/Pollock-y role)
10. Pragyan Ojha (got a decent FC record and spinners require a bit of maturity)
11. Ishant Sharma

EDIT: It hurts leaving Badri out but if he doesn't get his Test debut this year (unlikely), I doubt he's ever going to crack the XI. If he does make it, I'd make Dhoni keep and put him in at 3 and push everyone else down a spot.

Wouldn't be surprised if that happened with all his injuries. He will have to perform alot better with the bat than he has been if he is playing as a batter only. Would be a shame though as he certainly has the potential to be good with both bat and ball.

Henriques could also move to the number 3 spot for the ODIs, he was batting there in the u19 WC and he has a good technique and the hitting power to also do a Ponting.

For ODI's I will go with

1: J. Ryder (29)
2: B. McCullum (32)
3: M. Guptill (27)
4: R. Taylor (29)
5: K. Williamson (23)
6: J. Franklin (33)
7: C. Anderson (23)
8: D. Vettori (35)
9: T. Southee (25)
10: N. Wagner (27)
11: T. Boult (24)

Brackets for how old they will be in 5 years.

Similar team to what we have now that is mainly because we have a lot of young guys playing right now. Boult, Williamson and Anderson are very promising players and Neil Wagner will be in as soon as he can qualify (2 more seasons) James Franklin will be our batting all rounder at this time.

India ODI
1.Gambhir
2.Sehwag (C)
3.Kohli
4.Yuvraj
5.Dhoni (Wk)
6.Raina
7.Jadeja
8.Bhajji
9.Ishant Sharma
10.Chawla/Kulkarni
11. Sangwan
Won't suprise me if Dhoni loses the captaincy because he needs to focus on his "wicket keeping" or "batting". Plus captains are rarely longer than 3-4 years anyway.

Australia ODI:
1.Phill Hughes (C)
2.R. Quiney
3.Clarke (Vice)
4.Luke Pomersbach
5.Tim Paine (Wk)
6.Shaun Marsh
7.Moises Henriques
8.Heal
9.Johnson
19.Brendan Drew
11.Siddle
I don't think Watson will be in the side. Way too injury prone. Lol the captaincy was just a joke. No idea who'd take it but we might pull a Graeme Smith in Hughes;)

1.Ahmed Shehzad
2.Nasir Jamshed
3.Younis Khan
4.Adnan Raza
5.Umar Amin
6.Shahid Afridi!!
7.Sarfraz Ahmed
8.Umar Gul
9.Mohd Aamer
10.Mohd Talha
11.Abdul Qadirs Son(cant rememebr his name)

Playing 100+ ODIs route?

:p

In my scenario, Dhoni has traded up the glovesman job to Karthik and also bowls part time as a medium pacer!!!

Karthik/Sehwag (Depending on Sehwag's retirement)
Gambhir
Dhawan/Pujara/Rahane
Kohli/Pujara/Rahane
Yuvraj
Dhoni
Rohit/Irfan/Jadejda (Assuming Irfan has his banana swing back)
Parmar
Kulnkarni
Ishant
Sangwan

I don't see anything wrong with Afridi in the test team, his record in test is actually good.
The kids name is Usman Qadir.

One thing I would expect for England is for Adil Rashid to actually take the all-rounder's role. I know at this point he'd be a questionable Test number 6, but how many 20 year olds can claim a first class average of 30? Pound for pound, he's outplaying Flintoff.
