India A v England A - 2nd Unofficial 4 day Test - at Calcutta - 1991/2

Pitch:
10 - Rock hard and built to last, this wicket is likely to play true if rather slow for the first 2 days at least.
Thereafter there is likely to be a glimmer of hope for the bowlers and with the ball coming onto the bat more quickly the scoring rate is likely to increase.
If, and it may never happen, the surface begins to crumble late in the game the bounce may becomes erratic the bowlers will at last come into their own.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 2A - Dry and Dusty (good for batting)

Day 1 Weather: 2 - Hot and Sunny

Injuries: K.J.Barnett - Septic Toe (miss 1 match)

Toss: India A

India A won by 184 runs

Man of the Match:
A.Kumble

The 2nd Unofficial 4 day Test largely followed the pattern of the 1st, with India A achieving a large victory after batting first and running up a big total.
Anil Kumble again bowled well for the home side, this time taking 7 cheap wickets to win the Man of the Match award for the 2nd game in a row.
Though it was an improved performance from England A they lost again by a large margin, this time by 184 runs.

New Zealand U-Bix XI v England XI - 3 day match - at Dunedin - 1991/2

Pitch:
54 - Rather green looking and the seamers should be assisted until the wicket dries out.
Should play easily in the middle days of the match but there could be help for the spinners on the final day.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: Green Wicket

Day 1 Weather: Cloudy, some sunny intervals

Injuries: None

Drawn

Man of the Match:
G.A.Gooch

An unbeaten 170* by England XI captain Graham Gooch was the highlight of a Drawn match at Dunedin.
Opener Kyle Welleans made an unbeaten hundred for the home side but the flat pitch meant bowlers struggled throughout the match.

New Zealand v England - 1st Test - at Christchurch - 1991/2

Pitch:
81 - The combination of high moisture content in the top surface and a bone hard layer beneath makes this a difficult pitch to read.
Probably the seamers can expect some early help on the 1st day but thereafter the wicket should play easily until it begins to wear on the 4th or 5th day.
The spinners should enjoy the rest of the match as it becomes more and more responsive to spin.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 132 - Green Wicket

Day 1 Starting Weather: 10 - Rain

Toss: New Zealand

With 2 spinners in their lineup and the pitch to favour Spin late in the match the home side batted first despite the Green Pitch.
Andrew Jones and Martin Crowe were batting well but the run out of Crowe for 51 started a slide and New Zealand slipped to 158/7.
Mark Greatbatch with 63 and keeper Ian Smith with 46 shared a partnership of 70 for the 8th wicket to take their team past 200 and the eventual total was 248.
Angus Fraser and Chris Lewis bowled well for England in conditions that became Overcast and aided Swing on Day 2 to take 3 wickets each on a pitch which has not yet flattened out.
Rain on Day 1 and 2 meant England start their 1st innings late on Day 2 with the Draw firming in the betting due to the weather.

New Zealand v England - 1st Test - at Christchurch - 1991/2

An excellent maiden hundred to Nasser Hussain and good innings by Robin Smith and Jack Russell took England to a large first innings total and a 1st innings lead of 198.
Hussain made 145 but more rain meant the England 1st innings didn't end until midway through Day 4.
Offspinner Dipak Patel bowled well for New Zealand on a pitch not offering him much as he took 4-95 off 40 accurate overs.
Overcast conditions mean the England seamers will be in the game when New Zealand start their 2nd innings.

Nasser Hussain scored his 1st Test hundred v New Zealand at Christchurch

New Zealand v England - 1st Test - at Christchurch - 1991/2

Centuries to opener John Wright and middle order batsman Mark Greatbatch allowed New Zealand to escape with a Draw after they had trailed by 198 on 1st innings.
Wright scored 168 and Greatbatch an unbeaten 159* as the England attack ran out of ideas on a pitch which remained Normal on the final day.
Left arm spinner Phil Tufnell kept going to take 4 wickets in a long spell but it made little difference as New Zealand easily batted out time.
Mark Greatbatch was named Man of the Match after scoring 222 runs for the match for once out, a fine effort.
The Draw leaves the 5 Test series at 0-0 with 4 to play.

India A v England A - 3rd Unofficial 4 day Test - at Madras - 1991/2

Pitch:
62 - A well prepared pitch which should play pretty well at least for the first 3 days, with just enough life to encourage the fast bowlers at the start.
The wicket is expected to take a bit of spin late in the game but this should be a pretty good contest between bat and ball.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 7A - Fast Paced Wicket

Day 1 Weather: 2 - Hot and Sunny

Injuries: M.D.Moxon - Back Strain (miss 1 match), D.J.Capel - Back Strain (miss 1 match), W.K.Hegg - Dislocated Shoulder (miss 2 matches), S.T.Banerjee - Knee Injury (miss 1 match)

Toss: England A

India A won by 9 wickets

Man of the Match:
M.Watkinson

India A lead 6 match series 3-0 with 3 to play

An improved England A performance but another loss, this time by 9 wickets halfway through Day 4, giving India A an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the series with 3 to play.
Legspinner Anil Kumble again troubled the England A batsmen but will now jet off to Sharjah to link up with the India ODI team.
Opener Navjot Sidhu, middle order batsmen Vinod Kambli and Praveen Amre and fast medium bowler Javagal Srinath will also leave for Sharjah, slightly weakening the India A team and giving England A hopes of a comeback.
Mike Watkinson had an excellent allround game for England A and was named Man of the Match in a losing cause, scoring 69* and 50 and taking 5-82 in the India A first innings.
India A captain Saurav Ganguly also had a good match, scoring 90 and taking 3 wickets in England A's 2nd innings.
John Crawley put up some resistance in the 2nd innings with 90 and was unlucky not to post his 2nd ton of the tour.

New Zealand XI v England XI - 3 day match - at Christchurch - 1991/2

Pitch:
7 - A nice batting track but with the prospect of some help for the bowlers late in the match and chasing a target in the 4th innings may prove well beyond all but the strongest of batting lineups.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 1 - Very Good Batting Wicket

Day 1 Weather: 3 - Sunny, some cloud about

Injuries: R.K.Illingworth - Shoulder Strain (miss 1 match)

Drawn

Man of the Match:
A.J.Stewart

The New Zealand XI collapsed after Tea on Day 3 on a wicket with Uneven Bounce to lose an entertaining match by 74 runs.
Alec Stewart and Robin Smith batted well for the England XI and Derek Pringle and Phil DeFreitas bowled well in a good allround performance by the tourists.

Back to India now for the 3 day our match between England A and Delhi at Delhi.

@Welwyn

Delhi 3.jpg

Delhi v India A - 3 day match - at Delhi - 1991/2

Pitch:
23 - A brown but slightly moist strip, suggesting that the bowlers might be favoured at some stage of the match.
The local feeling is the spinners may be best suited to the conditions by Day 3 and there are doubts about the wearing quality of the pitch so batting may become even difficult in the closing stages.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 3 - Normal Wicket

Day 1 Weather: 2 - Hot and Sunny

Injuries: W.K.Hegg - Dislocated Shoulder (miss 1 match)

Drawn

Man of the Match:
R.Lamba

England A got in some good practice in the 3 day game v Delhi with all their batsmen getting runs and Fast Medium bowler Tim Munton getting a 5 for.
A hundred to former Test player Raman Lamba was the highlight of a Drawn match.

New Zealand v England - 2nd Test - at Eden Park, Auckland - 1991/2

Eden Park 5.jpg

Pitch:
87 - A well prepared pitch which is likely to play easily throughout the match.
There may be some help for the seamers on the first morning until the affects of overnight watering wear off but after that happens the bowlers are likely to toil.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: Green Wicket

Day 1 Weather: Hot and Humid (bonus to Swing deliveries)

Toss: England

Sent in on a Green pitch New Zealand were reduced to 73/4 before the pitch flattened out after Lunch into a Good Batting Wicket allowing them to recover.
On his return to the side Ken Rutherford justified his recall with a magnificent career best 209 to take the wind out of England's sails and lead his team to a total of 483.
Rutherford shared big partnerships with allrounders Dipak Patel and Chris Cairns who made half centuries to revive the innings after a bad start.
The England attack struggled with the flat pitch after Lunch on the 1st Day with Phil DeFreitas and Steve Watkin the best of them with 3 wickets each.

Ken Rutherford rescued his side with a career best 209

New Zealand v England - 2nd Test - at Eden Park, Auckland - 1991/2

The England 1st innings largely followed the pattern of the home side's with 4 early wickets then a big recovery through a double century, this time a career best by Nasser Hussain.
Hussain has been brilliant form on this tour notching at least a century in each of his innings and added 263 for the 5th wicket with keeper Jack Russell.
Russell scored a century this time after being unluckily out in the 90's in the 1st Test and his form with the bat has been a huge positive for his team.
New Zealand seamer Willie Watson bowled well to take a 5 wicket haul to restrict England to a total of 384 with the innings ending just before Stumps on Day 3.
The home side begin their 2nd innings in the 1st session on Day 4 with a lead of 99 in Humid conditions on a Good Batting Wicket.

New Zealand v England - 2nd Test - at Eden Park, Auckland - 1991/2

New Zealand lost their openers cheaply but star batsmen Andrew Jones and Martin Crowe found form in a partnership of 175 for the 3rd wicket.
Crowe was brilliantly run out by a direct hit from Matthew Maynard to end his innings on 76 before Jones went on to record an unbeaten 131*.
New Zealand declared 10 overs before Stumps on Day 4 at 265/5 setting England a target of 365 to win off 100 overs.
The declaration leaves all results in play given the rate at which England scored in their 1st innings and a large crowd is expected for the final day.

Andrew Jones scored an unbeaten 131* to set up the declaration

New Zealand v England - 2nd Test - at Eden Park, Auckland - 1991/2

The England openers put on 120 to get England off to a good start in their chase of 365 off a minimum of 100 overs but when Mike Atherton fell for 41 new batsman Robin Smith started slowly.
Smith eventually picked up the rate when he got his eye in and Stewart reached a hundred just before Tea but the loss of Smith and Nasser Hussain just before Tea seemed to end the chase.
Matthew Maynard was out cheaply shortly after Tea leaving Stewart and keeper Jack Russell to play for the Draw which they achieved despite the loss of Stewart for 137.
Russell and Derek Pringle batted out the last half hour to leave the match Drawn and the series still level at 0-0 and both teams hoping for a more bowler friendly surface in the 2nd Test.
In a match dominated by batsman New Zealand seamer Willie Watson was named Man of the Match for his 1st innings 5 wicket haul.

Back to India now for the 4th Unofficial 4 day Test...

India A v England A - 4th Unofficial 4 day Test - at Bombay - 1991/2

Pitch:
94 - A high scoring match is in prospect on this well prepared wicket which is likely to give the batsmen the upper hand throughout.
Nothing for the bowlers to enthuse about until very late in the match when the spinners may begin to find the ball turning slowly as the surface wears.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 1 - Very Good Batting Wicket

Day 1 Weather: 1 - Hot and Humid (aids Swing)

Injuries: D.J.Bicknell - Stomach Bug (miss 1 match)

Drawn

Man of the Match:
R.S.Dravid

A Draw in the 4th Unofficial 4 day Test at Bombay was enough to give India A victory in the series.
The England A seam attack had bowled well in Humid conditions on Day 1 to see India A all out for 265 before their batsmen set up a 1st innings lead.
An unbeaten double century to Rahul Dravid rubbed out chances of an England A win before the visitors managed to bat out time for a Draw.

India A v England A - 5th Unofficial 4 day Test - at Kanpur - 1991/2

Pitch:

Day 1 Weather: 6 - Light Cloud

Injuries: M.D.Moxon - Stomach Bug (miss 1 match) - D.J.Capel - Hamstring Trouble (miss 1 match)

England A won by an Innings and 119 runs

Man of the Match:
