A Heart of Gold: A Pokmon Story
Iridium - Part 8
A new morning dawned over Goldenrod City. A good nights sleep had done me the world of good and I was fresh and ready to continue my journey. Goldenrod City had a Gym but before facing the Leader, I thought I'd take a look around this wonderful city.
Goldenrod Department Store
Across from the Pokemon Centre was the Goldenrod Department Store. This was a biggest store in all of Johto, stocking many items that weren't normally available in an ordinary Poke Mart. I looked through the items on all six floors. There were Poke Balls, battle items, medicines and TMs. In the end, I stocked up on a few necessary supplies and a few Lemonades.
Goldenrod Game Corner
Just up from the department store was the Game Corner. Apparently, this place used to be full of slot machines but recent law changes deemed gambling illegal. So they were all removed and a Voltorb Flip game was introduced instead. It was a bit like Minesweeper but not as easy. The man running the game gave me a
Coin Case to hold the coin which I won. I played through a few levels of Voltorb Flip before I got bored and left.
Radio Tower
There was a promotion going on whereby answering five questions correctly would earn you a Radio Card for your PokeGear. I went and took the challenge. Whilst answering the five questions (which were extremely easy) I noticed a girl down the counter. After I had received my Radio Card she introduced herself as Whitney, the Goldenrod Gym Leader. She said she answered one of the questions wrong and that she would be at the gym if I wanted to battle her.
Upstairs, I free to roam around the studios. On the second floor, there was a DJ called Buena who did a show called Buena's Password. She would announce a password everyday and if you could tell her what it was, you won some points which you could use to redeem some prizes. She gave me a Blue Card to store my points and asked me to tune in.
Goldenrod City
After leaving the Radio Tower, I decided to look around some more but in doing so got lost. I ended up down a dead-end street and found that there was a bike shop set up. I walked in and the first thing that struck me was the lack of customers. The store owner called me over and proposed a rather novel idea. He asked whether I would mind riding around one of his bikes in order to advertise his store. I readily agreed to help his struggling business and was handed a shiny new
Bicycle.
Goldenrod Tunnel
After finding my way back to the main street, I headed for the Gym. But thanks to my lack of direction, I got lost again. This time I came across the entrance to Goldenrod Tunnel. When I entered, out popped a Marrill and following it was Lyra. We spoke for a few minutes before she gave me a Fashion Case. I wasn't quite sure what to do with so I put it in my bag, thanked her and contemplated putting it on eBay later on. Goldenrod Tunnel was an underground shopping district with a stored that sold herbs, one that gave Pokemon haircuts and one that sold rarities. Along with the stores were some trainers, which was a great opportunity to get my Pokemon match fit for my battle with Whitney.
The trainers were mostly nerds and self confessed Pokemon maniacs. They were by no means serious trainers but the battles gave my Pokemon a nice experience boost.
Goldenrod City Gym
Finally I found my way to the Gym. When I entered, I was almost blinded by the ghastly pink floor and wallpaper. This was without a doubt a girl's Gym. The Gym was set up like a maze, with high walls filling the Gym. As I made my way around, I came across my first opponent.
Victoria, who I guessed was a model, started off with Sentret. I sent out Croconaw to dispatch her first Sentret. Geodude then took out the other two Sentret she sent out.
Samantha was next and she used two Meowth. Croconaw and Geodude took out one each which allowed me to get to Carrie who had a Snubbull. Geodude found little trouble in taking it out with a few Rock Smash attacks.
The last trainer was Cathy who had three Jigglypuff on her team. Croconaw and Geodude again ran through her team with ease. At last the path to Whitney was clear.

Whitney went on to say how she loved cute Pokemon which would explain her choice of interior design. Research prior to this battle said that Whitney specialised in Normal-type Pokemon. Geodude was the only Pokemon I had that knew a Fighting-type move, which was super effective. He would have a big part to play.
First up was Whitney's Clefairy. Geodude was sent out and I immediately called for Rock Smash. Clefairy took the full brunt of the attack but wasn't knocked out. However, this move backfired. Clefairy had somehow infatuated my Geodude. When I called for another Rock Smash, Geodude refused to attack for fear of hurting Clefairy. Clefairy was not so kind, using Metronome to hit my Geodude with random attacks. For a second, Geodude snapped out of his infatuation and I used the opportunity to call out an attack, which Geodude obeyed. The Rock Smash hit and Clefairy was out.
Next up was Whitney's main Pokemon, Miltank. Geodude attacked with Rock Smash to my horror the attack barely made Miltank flinch. Miltank struck back with Stomp which Geodude braced for. I had heard of Miltank using Rollout and was fully expecting it soon. But instead, Miltank used Attract which annoying, made Geodude fall in love again. This was not good. Whilst Geodude refused to attack, Miltank was hammering away at his health with Stomp. I quickly used a Super Potion and Whitney did the same. I called for Geodude to use Magnitude and amazingly, he obeyed. I noticed that Geodude would fall in and out of infatuation and had to time my attacks right.

Geodude obeyed my request for Rock Smash and I noticed Miltank falter slightly. This was good as the attacks were taking a toll on its defence. Another Rock Smash wore it down some more before a final attack knocked it out. The spell had been broken, and I had won.

After the battle but I was expecting a hearty congratulations from Whitney. But instead she had turned on the waterworks and started to bawl her eyes out. This was all pretty awkward. One of the trainers I faced before came up and said that he always cries when she loses and that I would have to wait for her to stop. I sat down and waited for her to finish packing a sad.
After what seemed like ages, she finally stopped. I approached her and she noticed that she had forgotten to give me the badge for winning. I was handed the Plain Badge:
Along with the badge, Whitney also gave me TM45 (Attract). This move was a right pain in the neck for me during the battle. Least I had the option now to inflict the same frustration on someone else.
My Pokemon were coming along nicely and I now had three badges. Things were going well.
