Route 42
After beating the gym and heating up, I decided to go see what was to the east of the town before heading towards Olivine. A guy ran out of the cave here and bumped into me. I was quite shocked and dizzy for a bit afterwards. To make up for it, he gave me HM04 - Strength. There was also TM65 - Shadow Claw nearby too which should prove to be quite a useful move in the future.
Route 38
I decided to get back onto my track of going towards Olivine City. There were a number of Pokemon trainers and new wild Pokemon on this route which were nice to catch and train on. I caught a Magnemite and decided to add it to my party; an electric Pokemon is always useful. On this route I also managed to find a Miltank, Snubbul and a Raticate.
Route 39
When I walked onto this route a guy who introduced him as Baoba came up to talk to me. He wanted to talk about the Safari Zone where there are heaps of new Pokemon to catch. My mouth was salivating at the thought of all these new wild Pokemon to grab and I couldn't wait until it was open. The Moomoo Farm was also on this route and I popped in for a look. Apparently one of their Miltank was sick and wasn't producing moomoo milk. They needed to feed Miltank oran berries to heal it. Unfortunately I didn't have any so I promised to come back later to help them with the Miltank. There were some trainers here as well, but no new Pokemon for me to catch, so I headed onwards to Olivine City.
Olivine City
Upon entering the town, I saw Bob come walking out of the gym. Apparently the gym leader wasn't there; she was in the lighthouse nursing the Ampharos that lights it up. One of the guys in the houses here gave me a good rod to go fishing with which was nice - a bigger range of Pokemon to catch from the sea and I felt I'd go catch some more water Pokemon for me later on. I decided to head to the Lighthouse to help the gym leader out.
Olivine Lighthouse
There was a lighthouse inside that went right to the top. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be this easy to go visit the Ampharos, with the door at the top closed. I would have to climb up and fight all the trainers. This was a good opportunity to train my new Magnemite and we made it most of the way up before Magnemite fainted. Still it wasn't too difficult to get to the top. Once there, Jasmine, the leader, asked me to travel across the water to Cianwood City to fetch some medicine for Ampharos. It would be my first time across the water and the distance was pretty daunting...
Route 40
I had to cross the massive ocean to get to Cianwood City to fetch the medicine for the Ampharos at the top of the lighthouse. It was a daunting task but someone had to do it. Before I set off however I decided to do a spot of fishing and managed to catch a Krabby! In the Pokemon Centre someone wanted a Krabby so I traded my newly caught Pokemon for a Voltorb.
Once I had done that, I set off. There were a number of trainers to battle on this route and I took the opportunity to train Magnemite and hopefully get him to the same level as all my other Pokemon. His electric attacks were super-effective against all the water Pokemon on this route. I managed to catch myself a Tentacool and a Tentacruel here.
Route 41
In the middle of this route were the Whirl Islands. I wasn't able to access them however due to the huge whirlpools blocking the way; I guess this is how they got their name. There were more water pokemon trainers here but they were no problem. I did manage to find one new Pokemon however, a Mantine.
Cianwood City
Finally I reached land again. It was good to be on solid ground again, despite how comfy Dratini was to ride on. First stop was the Pharmacy, where the guy behind the counter gave me the required medicine to heal Ampharos. I also found a guy in one of the houses who was afraid that his Shuckle was going to get stolen - apparently Bob had been by before and stolen another of his Pokemon. He decided that he would let me look after his Shuckle, a deal which I gladly accepted. Before heading back to Olivine however, I decided to take on the gym leader.
Cianwood Gym
Inside the gym, I could see the gym leader Chuck right before me. He had a whole torrent of water pouring down on him however and didn't seem to notice me standing right in front of him. I guess the only way to get his attention was to stop the water. For this I had to climb his gym to get to the top, fighting the trainers along the way. Togetic knows Extrasensory which is super effective against all the Pokemon in the gym. Despite this, he still had some trouble fighting his way to the top, and was helped by Dratini. I was surprised to see that Dratini evolved to Dragonair as a result of this!
Finally I reached the top and stopped the water. Chuck was a bit annoyed and decided to take his anger out on me by fighting me. His first Pokemon was a Primeape, but this was easily taken care of by Togetic. His Poliwrath was a different story. It knew Hypnosis which put my Pokemon to sleep, and while they were asleep used Focus Punch on them which is a super-powerful move. He eventually went down to my Magnemite's electrical abilities, but not without putting up a huge fight. As a result of this battle I was given the Storm Badge and the TM for Focus Punch. Magnemite also evolved as a result, which pleased me to no end.
Upon leaving the gym, Chuck's wife met me and gave me HM02 - Fly as a reward. This would be especially helpful as I set off back to Olivine to hopefully heal Ampharos back to full health.
After defeating the gym leader and getting the call from Baoba, I headed back to the Safari Zone, to take the second test.
Safari Zone
After reaching the Safari Zone, I went inside and talked to Baoba again. He told me that the new test was ready and this time, I had to catch a Sandshrew. He said it wouldn’t appear in the current safari zone setting though. He then led the way towards a machine of some sort. He told me that it would let me customize the safari zone areas, and it was called the Area Customizer. Who would have thought! He then went and sat back down and then told me that Sandshrew would be found in the desert area. I used the area customizer and set up for the 6 areas I hadn’t been to yet. I then payed the $500 to get my safari balls and went searching for pokemon. I started by looking in the desert area, and found a Sandshrew straight away. I caught it with my first ball and I looked around the desert for more pokemon. I also caught a Sandslash in the desert area but couldn’t find any other pokemon. I moved onto the swamp area next and caught myself a Hypno. I also found many Murkrow’s but they were very hard to catch and I ended up giving up. I then went to the forest area where I caught a Misdreavus. I ran out of balls soon after and I left.
I picked up my Sandshrew from my PC and showed it to Baoba. He then called me the owner of the Safari Zone. I thanked him, but he told me that I’d still have to pay admission. That was annoying but I said thanks anyway. I had traded with a friend to get a Shiny Stone so I gave it to my Togetic and it evolved into a Togekiss. I then took a rest for the night, ready to go to the safari zone the next day again.
I went to the Safari Zone during the day, hoping to catch a fair few more pokemon. I looked in the desert area first and caught a Cubone and a Marowak. I headed to the Rocky Beach next, where I caught myself a Slowbro and a Doduo. I then moved onto the marshland, and caught a Weezing, Arbok and Grimer. I also caught a Mr Mime, before searching for a Kangaskhan and finally caught one, before I run out of balls. After that, I flew back to Ecruteak City, ready to move on.
Mt. Mortar
I left to the east of Ecruteak City where I saw a cave. It was Mt. Mortar, and I went inside. I picked up a hyper potion on the rocks. I found a variety of items in the cave such as an ether, revive, max repel, ultra ball, max potion, full restore and a PP Up. There was also a couple of trainers, which Dragonair and Jolteon disposed of. After checking out all I could in the cave, I headed back out onto Route 42.
Route 42
I moved to the east, by surfing across where I found a tree to cut down. I cut it down and Suicune came jumping out, pushing me out of the way before jumping off. Eusine then came up to me again, talking about Suicune’s bravery. I then moved on and found a super potion before surfing across another body of water and running into a trainer with a Qwilfish, Jolteon making quick work of it, with a bolt of electricity. There were a couple more trainers to the east of him, and Larvitar took care of the first, before Togekiss took out the other trainers 3 pokemon. I had a look in the grass then afterwards and caught a Mankey and Flaaffy. I then moved onto the next town.
Mahogony Town
I healed my pokemon first before checking out the rest of the town. The gym was blocked by some guy, not surprisingly. After checking out some of the others, I found out that there was apparently a red Gyrados at the Lake of Rage. There was a guy selling a RageCandyBar for $300 so I bought one, even though I didn’t know what it was for. There was also a Souvenir Shop but they weren’t really selling much so I just sold a Nugget before moving on to the north of the city, since the guy that sold me the RageCandyBar wouldn’t let me pass.
Route 43
There were a few trainers on this route but they weren’t very tough and my pokemon didn’t have any problems overcoming them. There was a building on the right but I decided to go through the grass, searching for new pokemon but couldn’t find any. I continued moving up, beat the rest of the trainers and proceeded to the Lake of Rage.
Lake of Rage
There was a huge body of water on this route, and a red Gyrados was in the lake. I surfed towards it and examined it before it made a huge roar and I sent out my Espeon. Espeon lowered its health and because it was a wild pokemon, I threw an ultra ball at it. I was surprised when I caught it straight away. The shiny Gyrados was now mine. I also obtained the Red Scale which I found on the Gyrados. I then looked around the Lake of Rage some more and found the Choice Specs, Red Flute and a couple of TM’s, Hidden Power and Secret Power. I then went back down where I found a red haired guy. He introduced himself as Lance, and he said I was a trainer with considerable skill. He then asked me to investigate what was happening so I said I would, so he told me to meet him in the souvenir shop in Mahogony Town, and then flew off. But first, I decided to fly back to Cherrygrove City, before heading up to Mr. Pokemon’s house. He noticed the Red Scale and said he wanted it. He then asked if I would care to trade it, and since I had no other real use for it, I said I would and he gave me an Experience Share for it, which I gave to my Larvitar. I then flew back to Mahogony Town.
Team Rocket HQ
I went into the Souvenir Shop where Lance was there with his Dragonite, who used Hyper Beam on one the guys there as I walked in. He then uncovered a Secret Passage, so I walked down the stairs. I walked past a statue of a Persion but it seemed to set off an alarm, and a Team Rocket guy came straight away, forcing me into the battle. I beat him, before another grunt came along but his fate was the same. He also spilt out a bit of information saying that surveillance cameras were in the statues but there was a switch to turn them off. After avoiding all the other statues, I found a Scientist who battled me with 3 Magnemites. I defeated him, before disabling the security system, through his PC. I picked up the Guard Spec beside him before going back. I picked up a few more items, while defeating another trainer and then I headed down to the basement. Lance was there and healed my pokemon for me, before running off again. There were a couple more grunts down here but again, they were no challenge for my pokemon. I moved down the next set of stairs where Lance told me that we needed passwords to unlock some doors, before heading off again. I had a look around and beat one of the Team Rocket Grunts who gave me one of the passwords, Slowpoke Tail. I then headed into the next room and defeated the Scientis and Team Rocket Grunt, who gave me the second password, RaticateTail.
I then went up the stairs again and moved across, fought another Grunt before heading back down. As I walked towards the Password protected door, my rival turned up again who had apparently been beaten by Lance. He then complained before pushing me and running off. What a loser! I then used the two passwords to open the door and went up to one to the guy. He was mimicking Giovanni but I knew he wasn’t and then he showed himself as the Executive, Petrel. He told me the password to the door that I had passed earlier but apparently, it only worked with his voice. He then challenged me to a battle, and sent out Zubat. Larvitar made quick work of it with Rock Slide. I sent out Togekiss next to quickly defeat his Koffing and kept him out there to finish off the battle, defeating the Raticate pretty easily with a couple of hits using Extrasensory. He then ran off, leaving his Murkrow behind. His Murkrow then came over to me and repeated the password in Petrel’s voice. The Murkrow then ran off, so I followed it. It led the way back to the password protected door and then screamed out the password, mimicking Petrel’s voice before running off. I walked through and went for a look around before I heard a voice, “Hold it right there!” I turned around and saw Ariana, with a Rocket Grunt. They were about to double team me before Lance came and stopped them. She then went on about my dignity, despite the fact that she and her grunt were about to fight me. We then battled. They sent out Arbok and Drowsee while I sent out my Togekiss and Lance sent out his only pokemon, a Dragonite. Dragonite used Fly, while Togekiss nearly took out Arbok with Extrasensory. Their pokemon both tried to attack Dragonite though and missed, before Dragonite came down and attacked Drowsee. I told Togetic to use fly and he came down to finish off Arbok, before Dragonite finished off Grimer with Fly and Murkrow with Thunder before Ariana sent outher final pokemon, a Gloom. Dragonite tried to attack it with Fly but Togekiss used Extrasensory before that happened.
They ran off, before Lance tried to deactivate the machine, but there was no switch so he said that we would need to kill the Electrodes. They were very difficult to catch though so Larvitar took care of them all, with Spark not affecting him. During the last battle, Larvitar grew to level 30 and it evolved. It evolved into a Pupitar. Lance then gave me the HM05, Whirlpool before leaving again. Now it was time to take on the Mahogony Gym.
Olivine Lighthouse
After winning the Storm Badge and getting HM02, I decided that the most important thing for me to do right now was to go help the Lighthouse Ampharos. I flew back as fast as I could and raced up the lighthouse to find Jasmine and Ampharos up there waiting for me. After she had applied the medicine, Ampharos seemed in great health and began lighting up the ocean again. When I left the lighthouse, I got a call from Baoba, the Safari Zone guy. He said that it was all done so I decided to fly back over to Cianwood City to go check it out.
Route 47
Before getting to the Safari Zone there were a couple of new routes I had to traverse. On my way to Route 47 however I found Suicine. He was just sitting up there and as I approached he bounded away. Eusine arrived on the scene shortly afterwards and decided to prove himself by battling me. He had an interesting combination of Pokemon but they were no match for me and my team. After this fight I was amazed to see that my Magneton evolved into a Magnezone! My Pokedex found it difficult to recognise what this new Pokemon was, and couldn't find it's Pokedex number which I thought was weird. As well as this, Croconaw evolved into Feraligatr who looked really frightening.
Once I had got onto Route 47 itself there were a whole heap of new Pokemon waiting for me to catch. There were also some trainers who were a bit more difficult that usual but I was still able to take care of them. I managed to catch a Golbat, Kingler, Quagsire, Steelix and Seel.
Route 48
This route is a very short one, however there was a patch of grass that also had a number of new Pokemon. I continued filling up my Pokedex by catching a Farfetch'd, Tauros, Fearow, Gloom and Girafarig.
Safari Zone
At the entrance to the new Safari Zone is a sort of bazaar with a couple of stores selling some pretty cool items. I bought some Dusk Balls that would help catch some of the tougher Pokemon out there. Once I entered the building, Baoba came and asked if I wanted to take the challenge. I accepted and he tasked me with catching a Geodude. I paid $500 and received 30 Park Balls to catch Pokemon with. Seemed like a pretty good deal! Inside the Safari Zone are six areas to explore, that change each time. There were a multitude of new Pokemon for me to catch here and I went on a catching spree nabbing myself a Smeargle, Jigglypuff, Marill, Poliwag, Wobbuffet, Psyduck, Mr Mime, Misdreavus, and a Murkrow.
Ruins of Alph
I decided that now I had the HMs for Fly, Strength and Surf, I'd go back to places I'd visited before to reach places I couldn't get to previously. One of the places that had a lot to explore was the Ruins of Alph. Here I was able to use Surf to enter a new building and solve another puzzle. This meant I unlocked more Unowns inside the Ruins. As well as that, there was a trainer here to defeat and a new Pokemon, Natu. I caught one to add to my collection.
Union Cave
The next exciting place was Union Cave. There was a new area at the bottom end of the cave that housed a whole heap of trainers to battle. This was only accessible through using Surf, and since it required this HM, the trainers down here were pretty powerful. They were stronger than anything I had faced before and I only just managed to defeat them all with my Pokemon. At the end of this half there was a large section of water that seemed to lead nowhere. It was rather suspicious so I decided that I would have to come back and investigate this at some later point in time. The other new area in Union Cave was at its north end. There were a couple of hikers here to fight, but also two new exits to the cave. These both led to new buildings in the Ruins of Alph and therefore more puzzles. After solving these two new puzzles I think I managed to unlock all the types of Unown in the cave. I would have to come back later and try and catch them all.
Olivine Gym
After completing all these distractions I felt it was finally time to come back and defeat Jasmine, the gym leader of Olivine City. The trainers in the gym who I would normally have to fight decided not to battle me because of the way I had helped Jasmine in healing the Ampharos. I could have done with the extra experience but I didn't really mind either way. Jasmine used steel type Pokemon which have a lot of natural resistances making this fight difficult. She had two Magnemites however, and I have much experience with them, seeing as I used to have one. These weren't too difficult to take down. Her Steelix was a tough one however. At level 35 it was stronger than anything I had ever faced and was incredibly powerful as well. It took Dragonair a number of shots to finally take it down with its Surf attack. Jasmine gave me the Mineral Badge once I had beaten here, as well as TM23 - Iron Tail. Now it was time to travel back to Mahogany Town to make my way towards my next badge.
I still haven't got the phone call from Baoba about the new challenge yet I want to go catch some more Pokemon from the Safari Zone and start training my Larvitar
