TT Lions vs. Ogden Social Club
Played at Ogden Social Club CG
10/02/2006
Ogden Social Club: 248/9, 50 overs [Chlorey 82, Desouza 58, Rudi 6/55, Tuckett 1/43]
TT Lions: 249/5, 49.4 overs [Bunn 66, Dennis 61*, Weekes 2/42, Ganfield 2/45]
A boring league fixture which was expected to be an easy win for the up-an-coming TT Lions turned into a thriller of a match which had wickets, big hits, and some great bowling, batting and fielding. The match was made even more exciting with the fact that the Lions were understrength, and that this match was Lennox Rudi's debut match. This was also one of Tuckett's early matches, and they both were already being touted as the future of the TT Lions.
After winning the toss, the Ogden Social Club elected to bat first. The pitch was dusty and it was a humid day, ideal conditions for batting and not good for the seamers, although the pitch was expected to support reverse swing later in the day. Debutant Rudi was expected to take the new ball, after transferring to the Lions just the previous night. Atheron-ham, another up and coming bowler who was in form after getting a five wicket haul a few games back. Opening the batting were the hard hitting pair of Duncan and Spencer, and they made their intentions clear by sledging young Rudi before he even bowled a ball!
However, it was Lenno who got the last laugh, as Duncan was out caught and bowled in the first over, Rudi holding on to an absolute blinder. Rudi struck again in his next over, getting Evanson edging one to keeper Mpumelele, at at 18/2 the Lions were on top. But Chlorey and Stifler fought on, adding a steady 59 runs for the third wicket. But just as Stifler was looking to launch into the bowling, he misread a beatiful googly from Tuckett was was clean bowled. Webb played some nice shots, but got runout by a direct hit from Jordan T?oeu for 15, the score 119/5. Keeper Desouza got stuck in though, and with Chlorey rescued the innings with a brisk partnership.
However, Rudi returned for his second spell, and trapped Chlorey in front for 82, ending a fine 76 run partnership. At 185/5, a score of 270 seemed acheivable. However, it wasn't meant to be. Allrounder Weeks was cleaned up by a Rudi yorker, and Swain was caught behind in the same over. Gadd slapped pacer Bryant straight into Greenwood's hands at cover, and hick was yorker for naught by Rudi again. At 206/9, things seemed all over. But Rudi was exhausted by now, and was struggling to keep the ball on the pitch, conceded 4 no-balls and 2 wides in his last 2 overs. Bryan't pace was used against him well, and the last wicket yielded 42 runs as the Ogden Social Club set a score of 249 for the Lions to chase. Not impossible, but not easy either.
The Lions got off to a shakey start, Mpumelele out in the first over. Greenwood came in and played some lovely shots, but top-edged a pull to square leg to give Ganfield his second wicket. After a start like that, it was no suprise Bunn and T?oeu decided to bat cautioulsy. And while Bunn managed to get the odd boundary, T?oeu has just shut himsled up, and it was a relief to many when he edged spinner Weekes to Desouza. However, Bunn fell just after, slicing Weekes to Ganfield, and things were looking tricky. Rudi was the new man in, on debut, with experience skipper Arthur Dennis. The slow performance by the top order meant that the TT Lions, the favourites, now needed 86 runs in the final ten. The match was boiling down to a thriller, but Dennis and Rudi didn't give up. Rudi showed his class with a fine 38, running hard for ones and twos, while occasionaly finding the boundary. But the main man was Dennis, whose vintage big-hitting set the team up. However, Rudi fell right towards the end of the innings, missing a straight ball and ending a match winning 70 run partnership with his skipper. A fine perfromance by this youn lad on debut, definately showing star material for the future. But the task wasn't done. At 212/5, the Lions still needed 37 runs of just around 5 overs. Nguyen-lee nudged and pordded while Dennis found the gaps at crucial stages, and it went down right to the final over, with 7 needed off it. Dennis steered the first ball down to third man for a single, and Nguyen-lee played an almost identical shot the next ball. Dennis hit the next one hard down the ground, but found the man in the deep, and the equation was 3 needed off 4. But it didn't last any longer, as Nguyen-lee punished a lightly short ball through midwicket for four to seal the deal in an absolute thriller. Riding on the back of a fantastic allround performance from Lennox Rudi, the Lion's pulled of a thriller despite playing a virtual second XI. No suprise who the MOTM was, and to this day, Rudi's 6/55 remains his best bowling figures.
