One of the early Battrick Championships was in progress during this time, and this was a Championship match. The Lions weren't particulary fond of these matches, using them as practice more than anything else despite having one of the best squads at the time. But this match was between a fast-improving Cricket Geniuses and the experienced Lions, two squads quite equal at the time. Both teams had already built up a bit of rivalry till this moment, and this match promised a lot.
The pitch was a typical Lion Stands ground, and it was a sunny day. A good day for cricket with a high scoring match expected.
But before the match, the Lions had announced a reversed batting order, in order to combat the fanatastic pace bowler Karl Barker, one of the best in PC around the time. Arthur Dennis won the toss and elected to bat, only to find thier plan had backfired, leaving the Lions 12/4 after 5 overs! Rudi, Delop and Bunn tried to rebuild, but the Lions stumbled thier way to 81/7 and were in deep trouble. Or that is, would have been in deep trouble, if it weren't for Cox and Crouch. The pair slowly and steadily rebuilt the innings, taking the team to 200/7 in 40 overs. And from there on it was chaos. Crouch imploded, and with some great support from Cox added 89 runs in the final 10 overs as the reversed batting order seemed to be paying off! The bowlers tired out and lost their line to a rampaging Crouch. Cox fell just towards the end, and Crouch started the final over on 97. A miraculous century looked on the cards, as at one point 250 looked difficult for the Lions, let alone 280+, and a Crouch or Cox century seemed out of the question. Crouch picked a single, Dennis did the same, and Crouch repeated the procedure. Crouch on 99, 3 balls left in the innings. But Dennis picked up a double, and smashed the next two balls to the fence to leave Ryan Crouch stranded on a brilliant 99 not out!! 289/8, a massive looking score, and the Lions were on top.
With a daunting total to chase, the Geniuses needed star batsman Mampes to fire. He didn't, holing out for a second ball duck as the Lions started with a bang! Hoult and Holmes had a difficult job, but batted fantastically, keeping a good pace and not taking many risks. At 161/1, the Geniuses were in firm control. But Ryan Crouch wasn't about to give up, and struck a double whammy by dismissing both Hoult and Holmes in the space of two overs. As the RRR rosed, panic set in in both teams. 84 runs needed in the last 10, the tension grew. But Mears kept his composure and scored a classy 50 off 40 balls, before Ryan Crouch struck yet again. With 6 overs left, the Geniuses needed an entirely gettable 44 runs with 6 wickets in hands. Youngster Udabadalawa and Burnip took the game right down to the wire, before a late surge helped them seal a clinical run chase with just 3 balls left in the innings! Crouch was taken at above 7 RPO, and was dying from exhaustion after his herculean one-man show. But it wasn't enough, and the legendary rivalry between these two teams was born.
