Shaun Briggs Season Analysis

We all know that it takes a special player to make their first class debut at the age of 18. Sachin Tendulkar made his at the age of 15, and Brian Lara at 18 and look at the spectacular heights they have reached on the world stage today. After the debut season Shaun Briggs has had, you would not begrudge him of going on to be just as special as those players. The young English all-rounder has already been hailed the next Freddie Flintoff and who could blame them.

Briggs debut season has seen him score 1446 runs at an average of over 53 with the bat and pick up 62 wickets in 16 County Championship games. Despite that though, Briggs did have one fatal flaw at the beginning of the season; his failure to settle in to one day cricket. Coming in at 4 or 5 with 11 or 12 overs left it is hard to play yourself in and go on from there which is where Briggs was struggling, getting scores which just managed to scrape double figures, but when he was propelled up to open the innings towards the middle of the season, we saw how capable Briggs was going in and having a blast at the start of the innings and his top score in one day cricket of 83 came in his first game at the top of the order. In 14 Totesport League games, Briggs scored 400 runs at an average of just over 28 and he picked up 30 wickets, an impressive record.

Yorkshire's most successful competition saw them win the Twenty20 Cup for the first time, and it was mostly in part to Briggs and his fellow opening partner Ian Harvey. The two ripped the bowlers that came at them to pieces and on finals day, Briggs scored two fifties to help Yorkshire to victory. In 10 Twenty20 games, Briggs scored 365 runs at an average of 36.50 and he picked up 27 wickets, a great effort which lead Yorkshire to the title.

Briggs' amazing first season was completed when he gained a call up to the England A team which will tour the West Indies in the winter. Playing alongside some of the players who have already experienced cricket at the highest level will only help Briggs and if Briggs does as well as everyone has predicted, he may find himself alongside Vaughan and co in the coming years.

After this great debut season, many would think Briggs would be unable to reproduce the form he has shown this season, but, if Briggs continues to learn and continues to show the same enthusiasm he has shown throughout the whole season, he will no doubt be a force to reckon with and go on to greater things, but that is only something we will find out when the 2006 season kicks off.

Innings Of The Season
121 vs Northants at Headingly (Frizzell County Championship Game 3)
Reason: The first century for Briggs at first class level and it proved to be his highest score of the season as he played a fine and patient knock

Wicket Of The Season
A.Flintoff b S.Briggs 1 vs Lancashire at Old Trafford (Twenty20 Game 5)
Reason: Briggs bowls arguably his best delivery of the season as he gets a ball that pitches way outside the offstump to seam back in and knock back Freddie's leg stump, a ball which the big man himself was probably proud of.

So, stay tuned as Briggs now prepares to fly off to the West Indies with his England A colleagues for what is sure to be another exciting period of time for the youngster!

Wow, now the england selectors really have to look at him. Dismissing flintoff, the man that the Aussies feared most!

One 4 day warm up game vs Trinidad
Two Digicel Test matches
Three Digicel One Day games

England A today touched down in Trinidad for the start of their tour of the West Indies. With many players looking to catch the eye of the selectors out here in time for the tour of India and the Summer tests against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, its sure to be a fascinating series and one which the England boys should not take lightly. With many young West Indians fully knowing they have a chance of breaking into the senior squad, they will be looking to impress which adds more excitement to what is going to be a cracking series.

The England boys will be given time to have some nets and practice in the field before their first game against a strong Trinidad side gets under way and it is a game which England A captain Gareth Batty is looking forward too. "I came here a couple of years ago with England but unfortunately I wasnt selected for the Trinidad test and instead got hammered by Lara later on in the series! But the Queens Park Oval is a lovely ground and we are all looking forward to getting the tour off to a good start with a strong performance"
