Focussing on the whole team would go agains the flavor of this thread. Also, we can have more matches if the focus is on Briggs alone. May be you could get England A to tour Canada, UAE...
Right, it seems overwhelmingly at this moment that just focusing on Briggs is the way to go! I was going to do that anyway but I just thought I would see what you guys thought!
Northamptonshire vs Yorkshire Northamptonshire County Ground
Yorkshire travel to Northamptonshire for their final game of the season. After suffering 3 straight defeats in their last 3 games, Yorkshire will be looking to go out on a high. The same cannot be said for Northants however, having only one once this season in the County Championship and sitting at the bottom of the table with not much to fight for. Both teams should be up for it though, looking to go out on a high and show their early intentions and aspirations for next season, especially with the two set to be in different leagues. The two captains; Usman Afzaal and Craig White, met down at the pitch to check out the conditions.
A good pitch has been served up for the penultimate game of the season here then, but with the overcast conditions, there may be some early swing in the air for the bowlers which the batting team would have to be wary of. The match referee made his way down to the middle to conduct the coin toss.
So, Craig White won the toss and has decided his side will bat first on this good looking pitch. With Northamptonshire struggling with their batting this season, Yorkshire will look to put early pressure on them, and with the innings defeat they inflicted on them earlier in the season, they will be full of confidence. The teams were announced soon after the toss, and the players made their way out on to the field to begin the game.
Jaques Century Guides Yorkshire Past 400 At The Northamptonshire County Ground
Yorkshire opener Phil Jaques showed why he is touted as a future Australian test batsman, hammering a fine century on the first day of the final game of the season, leaving Yorkshire in a strong position at the end of their first innings. Jaques century, along with healthy contributions from his fellow opener Wood (70) and from young leg spiner Lawson (57) helped Yorkshire reach 409 before eventually being bowled out just before lunch on day 2.
An opening stand of 156 got Yorkshire off to the perfect start and justified Craig White's choice to bat first on what looked a fine pitch to bat on. The Northants bowlers struggled early on and Jaques and Wood took the attack to them and if not for losing 3 wickets for 22 runs during the middle of the innings, the task facing Northants could have been worse than it stands at the moment. Spin was the main wicket taker as Jason Brown finished with 4 for 91 while Louw and Phillips both picked up 2 apiece. Northants will now have to bat well to stay in this game, but judging on their performances with the bat this season, they may very well struggle.
From Briggs View Briggs got back to form with the bat, hitting a nice 46 before being given out to a dubious LBW decision which looked to have hit him outside the line of the stumps. After a poor game last time out, Briggs came into this game looking to justify the England A selectors choice for picking him and he went some way to doing that, playing some nice shots along the way, including a couple of huge sixes off spinner Jason Brown. The placement of Briggs shots was very impressive, something which seems to have improved as the season has progressed, but the dismissal which brought his downfall was the main talking point and it came as a shock to Briggs to see the finger go up, even Brown looked slightly suprised, but the umpire had the final say and another good innings from Briggs came to an end.
