Derbyshire vs Yorkshire
County Ground

Yorkshire look to finish their county season in style as they play the first of their final 2 games of the season against Derbyshire. With Yorkshire already guaranteed promotion next season, they can afford to loose this one but will be going out all guns blazing in an attempt to put the finishing touches on a fine season. Derbyshire have nothing much to play for here as they contemplate another year in the lower division. The two captains met up at the middle to take a look at the conditions before the toss.

Good conditions here with a flat, hard wicket which could provide some extra bounce, but also means the ball will come onto the bat well and runs could be a plenty here. Difficult decision for the captain who wins the toss here but that would be decided as the match referee joined the captains at the middle for the toss.

So, Derbyshire captain Luke Sutton won the toss and has decided to bat first on this track. A tough decision but with Derbyshire used to the pitch, they probably know what to do better than the visitors. The teams were announced and the small crowd welcomed the players onto the pitch as the proceedings got under way.

Bryant And Bassano Dominate Before Yorkshire Fightback
At The County Ground

Big scores from Jamie Bryant and Chris Bassano put Derbyshire in a good position after being bowled out for 358 in their first innings. The score could have been a lot bigger on a pitch was had provided little help for the bowlers and an outfield that has been lightening quick, but a spirited effort from the Yorkshire bowlers saw them claw back and claim wickets at important times, including that of Bryant who fell three short of a century, edging Kruis to the wicketkeeper. Kruis was arguably the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 3 wickets, while there were also 3 wickets for Ian Harvey too. The stand of 144 between Bryant and Bassano could prove to be dessisive though and Yorkshire will have to bat as well as Derbyshire to have a chance of winning this match.

From Briggs View
A tireless effort from Briggs saw him bowl 20 overs in 4 seperate spells for the reward of one wicket. At times, Briggs was rather wayward and was made to pay, especially when bowling at Bryant and Bassano who were at times dismissive of the Yorkshire bowlers, but when Briggs got it right, the runs were restricted and when the wicket came for Briggs it was more than deserved. Botha had been sticking around and when Briggs got one to come back at him off the seam, he bowled him through the gate becoming Briggs 61st victim of the season, a long time in the coming but it was an important wicket at a vital time for Yorkshire.

Yorkshire Crumble To Derbyshire Quickies
At The County Ground

The Derbyshire quick bowlers came out fired up and ready to wreck havoc, and that they achieved as they ripped through the Yorkshire batting line up and bowled them out for a measley 95, meaning Yorkshire have to follow on and now face a huge uphill struggle to save the game. The main man for Derbyshire was left hander Kevin Dean who finished with 4 for 51 and exploited the swinging conditions perfectly as his outswinging deliveries to the right handers brought about several edges to the slips. The Yorkshire batsmen are going to have to bat extremly better than their first innings effort, and, with the defecit of 263, a tough job lies ahead in conditions which still seem to suit the fast bowlers.

From Briggs View
Briggs was one of the few batsmen who managed to get some sort of runs in the Yorkshire innings as his score of 18 was only the 4th score in double figures in the whole innings. Briggs look settled at the crease, despite missing the last couple of Totesport League games, and when Briggs hit Dean for a couple of boundaries, it seemed he was gearing up for a big innings and long stay at the crease, but when Dean got one to move away from Briggs, the ball took the edge of the bat and Di Venuto took a fine catch at slip to dismiss the youngster who could do nothing about it.
