A T20 draft...cricket_icon & swacker's picks

Hmmm.....

I see a good strike-rate in him.

Guptill wasn't picked?

well, this is my write up.

and it's probably more to do with reason I didn't pick the other players as much as the reason I picked mcmillan.

the other two obvious choices were guptill and ryder, guptill for me has misleading international stats, his average dropping from the the impressive 34 to a far more pedestrian 24 without those zimbabwe matches. he's never played twenty20 at any of the mercenary domestic leagues either which left assessing his ability difficult. most of all though, as an opening batsman he occupies the spot in a twenty20 team that most of the best players play. I am convinced I can get a better opener than him later on with earlier picks coming up for stronger twenty20 nations than new zealand.

Ryder has played t20 in at the IPL and his international averages are more evenly spread, however, the disciplinary issues and up and down form make for a rather unimpressive career so far and I was loathe to pick someone that had made so little of their talent.

so mcmillan it was, he was very good in the ICL during his brief stint there, leading the Kolkata Tigers and finishing 3rd in the runs tables in the 2007-08 edition. he was new zealands best batsmen, and indeed one of the better batsmen in the tournament, at the 2007 twenty20 world championship. he's a steady middle order option more than anything else.

there was a few other considerations but the 2007 world championship and foreign league experience nailed it, so mcmillan it is.

The Author has had 24 hrs by my clock, so Bevab you are free to pick an Indian player.

I'm struggling to get my head around why Kruger van Wyk was picked, it would be good to see a write-up...

^Are there any better Kiwi T20 keepers out there? Hopkins maybe? But yeah on the face of it, I've not blown away with awesomeness :D

Good summing up of the case for and against Guptill and Ryder there Stinky, and yes I think you're right, easier to find openers of class in this draft - harder to find good middle order guys. I would think Guptill's still the best player to miss selection though, even given some cheap runs vs Zimbabwe. His record for Derbyshire was pretty good if I remember.

Other Kiwi guys that have pretty good T20 credentials that I found:

*Jesse Ryder - Stinky talked a bit about him, classy player but hasn't really had the corresponding classy results to show for it. Hit and miss it seems.
*Jamie How - Has done very well for Central Districts, not many chances for NZ in T20Is
*Hamish Marshall - pretty quick scorer who has made a lot of runs in English T20 competition

*Ian Butler - a real strike bowler (strike rate of around 15 in both international and domestic T20)
*Jeetan Patel - great average in T20Is thus far - 16.81

Yusuf Pathan

There are so many better guys than this guy. This should be the first point to occur to anybody's mind on my pick. Yet I have my reasons for picking Yusuf Pathan.

Yusuf Pathan is firstly a T20 specialist. My team really lacks a T20 specialist aside from Malinga. And of course, he can add the real spark to any team with his hard-hitting. A strike rate of 151.61 in 110 innings can only indicate his remarkable tendency to hit hard and make a desperate all or none attempt. Yes, he's inconsistent and he has hardly delivered anything substantial in the recent IPL, but he ain't here for consistency.

My team ATM lacks a real powerful hitter or basher, somebody who can put real energy to the game with his shots and Yusuf would fit the bill perfectly. And he's also a useful option with the ball, and this does make him a much more better asset than just a normal powerful hitter. His game-changing skills should obviously help my team, and also add an extra-dimension to my side. Consistency may be the only major problem of this guy, but aside from that, he's an excellent choice for T20's.

Team ATM:
Hayden
?
Misbah
Y. Pathan
J. Taylor
?
N. McCullum
Cooper
Malinga
?
?

Still have to make a write-up for Cooper.

Good pick, only his horror technique made me doubt picking him. Also I hate him greatly.

Best pick of the round I'd say. He has got a lot of runs in T20 format.

Good pick, only his horror technique made me doubt picking him. Also I hate him greatly.

I too kind of hate his technique (or lack of it) but it T20s he has been amazing. That said, he has played most of the T20 matches in India and Raina, in my own words, is "master of dead pitches".

There are a great number of good Indian players out there. Blame the IPL......

1. Imran Nazir
2. Craig Kieswetter WK
3. Darren Bravo
4. Ajinkya Rahane
5.
6.
7. Scott Styris
8.
9. Saeed Ajmal
10.
11. Umar Gul

My India pick is:

Ajinkya-Rahane.jpg

T20Is: Matches 3, Runs 82, Average 27.33, SR 122.38
T20: Matches 61, Runs 1254, Average 24.11, SR 118.07, HS 103*

I think he proved, against England, that he is a very talented batsman at the top of the order. How ever he has very limited experience at the international level, no tests, a handful of ODIs and just 3 t20Is but his domestic record speaks for itself, 9 50s and a century with a tonne of boundaries. This is definitely a player on the rise and would fit in perfectly at either 3 or 4, since I already have my opening combination sorted.

On second thoughts I could even have him replace Kieswetter at the top and the wicket keeper could come lower down. T20 is all about flexibility.
