A T20 draft...cricket_icon & swacker's picks

Morgan celebrates his recent century against Worcestershire

I have gone with Morgan as my first pick. He is among new group of batsmen who is an inventive with ability. He can surprise one and all with his unique shots. We might actually say that he was one of the reasons why Middlesex won t20 tournament in 2008 if I remember correctly, and then he followed playing for England in T20 WorldCup 2009. He had already made himself an integral part of the Twenty 20 and one day sides. We can now say that, with some authority that Morgan does have the game, spirit and absolute bravado to flourish at t20 level. And he is only 25 too. Orthodox sweep, unusual strokes switch hit etc,.... he can surprise all and sundry with his spotless hand eye. Morgan is from Ireland (has played 23 ODI for them), but is now full time England player. And sometimes when required, he can keep wickets.

Thanks. This should be a fun draft with some exciting young talent.

----------

Kohli, Afridi and Gayle, 3 top top names. Good pick guys. I'm not sold on old Warne but he did well in the IPL and is an astute captain, got to give him that. Morgan for me is definitely one of the most talented, limited overs cricketers out there at the moment.

Shane-Watson.jpg

I, initially was tempted to go for Malinga or Sehwag but thats when I thought of Watto. Ever since he has been slotted as an opener, he has made the spot his own. He has come a long way from being a bowling allrounder back in 2007. He is now much more consistent, hard hitting and one of the most feared batsmen around in the shortest format of the game. Not to forget his useful bowling which make him the official #1 T20I allrounder.

Some stats and facts about Shan Watson:

  • Second best strike rate amongst the players to score more than 300 T20I runs.
  • Highest strike rate amongst players to have scored more than 400 T20I runs.
  • Second in the most consecutive T20I 50+ scores.
  • Best strike rate for a player in 19+ T20I innings
  • 3rd highest no. of wickets taken in an innings in T20Is.
  • 5th highest wicket taker for Australia in T20Is
  • Best bowling figures for Australia in an innings.
  • 3rd highest run scorer for Australia in T20Is.

Since I have last pick for New Zealand and there's no chance of anyone decent being left by then, I'm gonna annoy everyone else and take

Brendon McCullum out of the equation.

The guy's passion for T20 is undeniable, rivaled only by a select few who choose to play the IPL over their country. Even went as far as competing for two leagues concurrently, the BBL and NZ's domestic competition, though it didn't work out too well as can be seen above.

On his day, this wicketkeeping opening batsmen can be devastating though, with a low to mid 30 average at a SR above 130 across international and domestic T20's. The man has 5 centuries and 27 halfas to his name, and no doubt more still to come..

Lasith Malinga

One of the best T20 bowlers hanging around, if not the best. He is widely renowned for his terrifying bowling, and I do have a weakness for preferring bowlers over batsman. His exception ability to pick wickets out of nowhere is truly remarkable. Despite the competition for Sri Lanka bowling spots being heavy, Malinga has been hanging to his spot with determination and with good consistency. With myself being the last picker for the Sri Lanka round, and also the fact that there are less bowlers who are really lethal hanging around, and obviously with this guy being in demand, he'll be my pick this round.

very t20 sedition, it's tactical, it's thinking outside the box, but most of all it's you choosing a kiwi over a plethora of aussies as your first pick.

Watson and Warner pretty much carry us at T20's, so I was a bit stuck for options with both of them gone :p Gayle and Kohli were the two internationals I had in mind too, but it's no surprise that everyone else wanted them too.

Looks like it's my pick. A lot of top choices already made by you guys, particularly the batsmen and I don't want to be left behind in terms of quality players so I'm gona go for one of the best bowlers in the format:

Umar-Gul_3.jpg

Stats:

Matches: 40
Wickets: 55
Average: 16.47
SR: 14.9
BBM: 5/6

His match figure of 5/6 is still the best by any bowler in t20 cricket and his average and strike rate are among the top 3. Few men can ball a yorker as devastating, especially when the ball starts to reverse. He can be wayward at times, but as the innings wear on the batsmen get pressed for runs, there is no one better (sorry Mr Malinga). Gul also has pace, clocking 90 when he feels like it and he has the ability to not only ball vicious bouncers but to drop the pace and out think the opposing batsman.

Just a request- can the writeups have proper stats please? For batsmen- matches, innings, runs, average, highest, # of fifites/hundreds, strike rate. For bowlers- matches, innings, wickets, # of four/five-fors, economy rate, strike rate.

I'm not sure I'll list all the stats - just highlight the relevant ones probably. One reason is the problem of which ones to use ie. some people are listing international stats only, some using domestic ones.

It's an interesting mix actually looking at the picks thus far. Warne for example hasn't even bowled a ball in a T20I, whereas Eoin Morgan has good international stats and OK domestic ones, but he couldn't crack the KKR lineup last season. I'm not sure which I'll favour: international numbers or domestic stuff - BOTH is probably the correct answer :)

itz not ardinissac itz Andrin Issac

Ah of course! Changing it now...sorry Andrin.

Kohli, Afridi and Gayle, 3 top top names. Good pick guys. I'm not sold on old Warne but he did well in the IPL and is an astute captain, got to give him that. Morgan for me is definitely one of the most talented, limited overs cricketers out there at the moment.

Didn't realise Kohli was going to be so popular - I can think of at least 5 Indian batsman who've outscored him in the IPL and when he made 68 vs SL the other day they mentioned it was his first time past 50 in a T20I. Numbers aside though, he's obviously one of the leading 50 over batsmen at the moment and a really classy player, I guess it makes sense he'd be popular.

Looks like it's my pick.

Actually it's STILL your pick - you get 2 in a row to make up for the fact you were last in round 1. Happy days for you cause Umar Gul is great value, I think he's the best T20 paceman around - all respect to Lasith...

The Magician

Ok, for my second pick I'm going to play it safe and strengthen my bowling with the man who I regard as the best spinner on the planet, Mr Saeed Ajmal:

18-Ajmal-crop.jpg

Matches: 39
Wickets: 54
Average: 16.24
SR: 15.7
Econ: 6.17

The man with the eternal smile and a magicians touch is in my opinion the single most entertaining spinner since Murali. Swann is a very good bowler, relying on the old art of dip and change of pace. Ajmal has that and more, he spins the ball miles and on the right surface and be utterly unplayable, just ask England. His doosra is one of the most potent weapons in world cricket and do all this with the stats shown above is simply phenomenal. Ajmal is also a great death bowler, something which spinners have not historically been good at. Partnering him with Gul creates the best t20 bowling pair in the world.

I think many rate Kohli so highly because his one of the few young batsmen in world cricket who have had an impact in all three formats of the game. Plus he is a real game changer, batting with controlled aggression, much like a young Inzamam or Ponting (not putting him in the same class just yet).

btw I'm using international stats more often simply because I personally believe they mean more than domestic stats. :)
