"I think we could score 3 or 4 goals. We have an organized team and the players gel well. We also have the great advantage of the fan support. There will be atleast 50,000 passionate fans screaming CELTIC! CELTIC!. It would be difficult for Everton to win here."
I think I can fly, and that El Salvador can conquer the USA in less than 1 hour.

Talking rubbish like that, just establishes how big a fool you are. This is European competition, and NOT the Scottish League of chumps.

Sorry Bala but I cant stand Celtic.:noway

So I'm basically gonna be backing your Everton side big time, and I hope you seal the tie in this first leg itself.:upray

Celtic vs Everton
UEFA Champions League Qualifiying Match - 1st Leg
10.08.2005, Parkhead

Nearly 60,000 passionate fans had turned up at the Parkhead for the first competitive game of the season. I was all jittery as I gave the pre-match talk to the boys. I had decided to stick on with my tried 4 - 4 -2 formation with James Vaughan starting ahead of McFadden and Dunc.

I fielded 3 of my signings Onyewu, Frey and Vampeta in the starting XI.

The Bhoys had opted for a 4 - 2 - 3 -1 formation with more emphasis on defense. John Hartson was to act as the lone striker.

Just before the boys took the field, I said

"Listen guys! This is going to be a BIG one. We are up against a decent team, but not in the calibre of the Italian team we played against. Their Director has predicted a convincing victory for them. I would have none of that. Fight! Fight for each and every ball. Get your head above theirs! Run like you have a charging bull behind you. Be proud of the Everton crest you sport on your jerseys. You have a nation expecting your win. Play for the team, play for your family, play for yourselves. Win it! Now lets go!"
Followed by a raucous cheering the boys took the field. Swedish referee Stefan Johannessen blew the whistle and the match kicked off!

Being a big Celtic fan and massive Everton hater this has to be Celtics game. Just depends on how good everton are on FM.

Special :cheers to Everton manager!!!

Thats a great cheer by the manager before the start!!!

I see you have stuck with Vaughan. I actually support that move too, as he is capable of scoring goals. Hopefully he and his captain Beattie will both fire in this game, or atleast one of them will.

Anyways its only Celtic.

Vampeta's wonder strike seals it...

We did it. We defeated Celtic at their home. We played a better game over all. The boys were turbo charged from the start as they weaved in and out of the Celtic players and surged towards the goal.

The defining moment of the game came as early as the 4th minute, when James Vaughan who was blistering towards the goal was tripped by Roy Keane just outside the box. The referee had no qualms in issuing the yellow card to the hard tackling Irishman.

Vampeta - Firing it in!

We had decided to let Vampeta take the free kicks around 30 yards area. Vampeta lined the ball and let rip a thundering volley towards the near post that could not be saved by the Celtic 'keeper Klos. The travelling Everton contigent and us staff erupted in one voice as the boys ran after the tearing Vampeta who ran towards the dug out and kissed the Everton crest in his jersey.

That set the tempo for the game as the Toffemen ran confidently towards the goal. Mikel Arteta was particularly impressive as he sent a flurry of passes towards Beattie and Vaughan.

The score at half time remained unchanged 1 - 0 to Everton.

At the passing of the hour's mark I rung up the changes replacing Beattie and Kilbane with Jamie McFadden and Leon Osman.

Osman and McFadden in (63 minutes)
Celtic was close to scoring on the 70th minute when substitute Zurawski went close after heading in a corner from Bjarnason. Frey did exceptionally well to hold on to the thundering header.

At 82 minutes, I called in James Vaughan as I wanted to defend the lead and sent in Umit Davala to take his bow. As Vaughan passed me to the bench, I clapped him on his shoulder and said

"Good game Jamie! Cheers!"
The youngster had a smile on his lips as he knew he had done his best on his biggest night out so far.

Tightening the defence.
(Davala for Vaughan - 82 min)

I decided to have McFadden as the lone striker and put Davala in a sweeper role. I also asked the boys to hit the long balls at McFadden.

The defense was a rock tonight with Yobo, Onyewu, Ferrari and Nuno Valente working seamlessly together. The fact that Celtic had just 1 shot on goal would prove the efforts of our defenders. Davala looked crisp in his 15 minutes of fame.

The final whistle rang after 2 minutes of injury time as we in the dug out got up to our feet and went streaming into the pitch. Hugs were all around and Arteta, Vampeta and surprizingly myself were hoisted on shoulders by the boys and we went in cheering like hell.

I just had to see Desmond's downcast face and for the first time from July I had a genuine grin on my face as we finally believed we can win a game.

And I just won my first official match incharge! Not bad eh.....

Yes, what does Mr. Desmond have to say about that? What happened to all those shouting Celtic fans and Everton not having a chance comments?

Fantastic strike from Vampeta, just what Everton needed. Good tactics thereafter employed by you to return to Goodisons with a one goal lead, and an away goal as well.

Mr. Dermot Desmond had reportedly shunned an interview from SKY after the game loss and was seen leaving Parkhead in a hurry! :D
