That away goal is crucial; Let's just hope we can take advantage of it at Goodison.

We had a cracker of a match today. Everton under their new boss played like a team possessed and came out of this tie victorious. This match can be called a battle of the midfield with just 6 shots goalside and 5 of them from the visitors.

Everton were clearly the better team today as they had a better passing and defending game. Their defenders were brilliant and let very little go past them.

Yobo, Onyewu, Ferrari and Nuno Valente worked seamlessly. Onyewu and Yobo were magnificient. But my man of the match was undoubtedly midfield maestro Mikel Arteta. He had a solid game, weaving in and out of the Celtic players and sending a barrage of passes through.

New signing Vampeta was brilliant and the free kick will remain in the minds of the Everton faithful for quite some time.

Special congratulations to the Everton manager Balaji, whose shrewd signings performed well and his tactics belied his inexperience.

This now sets up a cracker of a second leg at Goodison, where Celtic will have to win by more than 2 goals.

All to play for now.

Everton had one shot on target, and that too from a set piece. But Vampeta took maximum advantage of it. Your tactics to hold on to the one goal lead did work out in the end.

Also good to see the Spaniard Arteta do well.

Blackburn Rovers vs Everton
Ewood Park
13.08.2005

Our first match of the season begins with a tough trip to Ewood Park against the ever improving Blackburn Rovers. Blackburn have improved tremendously under Mark Hughes and they play a direct type of football.

We are confident after our away win at Celtic, but we are very much aware that Blackburn might just prove to be a little difficult to overcome.

Key men to watch out:

Craig Bellamy:
This pacy forward is certain to cause a few jitters. And it would be left to Onyewu to mark him closely.

Aaron Mokoena: Powerful player. Likely to cause a lot of problems.

We have put the boys through a systematic training regime that includes a rip-off analysis of the Blackburn players.

All set to play for tomorrow. Maniche and Daniel Carvalho will be joining us before our next match against West Brom.

We expect a narrow 1 - 0 win tomorrow.

Looking forward to the start of the season.Im going for a goal for Blackburn by who else,Bellamy.

We are for a cracker of a weekend today as all 20 teams would be in action.

Best of the lot would be Arsenal who will entertain Liverpool. This match could verywell set the tone for the season.

Aston Villa have won 2 - 0 at home to West Brom, thanks to a brace from Angel.

Manchester United will travel to Birmingham and Chelsea host Portsmouth. I expect two very one sided games in these.

Manchester City host Sunderland which might be yet another mauling for the Black cats.

Two good matches would pit Tottenham against Bolton at the White Hart Lane and Middlesborough entertaining Fulham.

Newcastle United travel to Upton Park as Charlton travel to the JJB stadium.

Another cracker of the match will see new Everton boss Balaji pitting his wits against Mark Hughes' Blackburn. This match might go either way but given the recent form of Everton and their changes, I would say Blackburn might just pip the Toffees. I would say a 1 - 0 win.

Blackburn vs Everton
Ewood Park - 13.08.2005
Referee: Uriah Rennie

Pretty moderate crowd of 23,000 had turned out to this opener against Blackburn. Pretty good conditrions with the temperature at 20 degrees, perfect for a good game of football.

My first EPL game as manager of Everton. I had stuck to the tried and trusted formula of 4 - 4 - 2 with James Vaughan getting yet another run after his solid performance against Celtic.

Kilbane was given the left winger role that was shared by van der Meyde and Phil Neville.

Blackburn had opted to play a single striker in Bellamy with a 5-man midfield.

As the boys were lining up the tunnel to take the field, I said

"Listen boys! We are up against a pretty good side. I know we can defend well. We can stave off the away pressure as well. All we need to do is keep of ugly tackles and get the ball up field. Don't hesitate to hit the bloody long ball. Now lets go and start this with a bang!"
Refree Uriah Renie blew the whistle and the game kicked off.

Andy's just back in after Arsenal won El Poole! :D

Kilbame move could work, especially since Blackburn are playing a 5-man midfield. I think Arteta and Bellamy hold the key for their respective sides, and I am going for a 1-1 draw in this game.

Best of luck, mate!

Dull Draw....

A pretty tight game today as we could not breach the goal. We had 6 shots but only one on target - A weak effort from Arteta. James Vaughan had a very poor match today. I would not blame the youngster though - he has not had enough exposure at the highest level. I need to get in a couple of strikers before the transfer window closes in a fort night.

Blackburn had 3 shots on target and one effort by Bellamy nearly sneaked in, but Yobo was magnificient and cleared it of the line. As expected Blackburn played a pretty rough game with 5 yellow cards dished out to them.

Kilbane -->
McFadden <--
(Halftime)

I pulled off Kilbane at halftime and sent in McFadden. McFadden was good on the flanks bringing in some much needed pace as he set up Beattie, but was shot high.

Beattie -->
Vampeta <--
(76 minutes)

Beattie tweaked his ankle at 76 minutes, so I replaced him with last match hero - Vampeta. I employed the Brazilian in defensive midfielder role as I asked the boys to hit the long balls. Vampeta with his pace could move up the field as well.

But the Blackburn defense was magnificient, especially Lucas Neill had a great game.

Thats how it ended - goalless. I would have taken this result given it before the match. But I knew I had to sort out the team first.

Sir Phil Carter
said to me after the match.

"Not a bad start at all! Though we could have won it!"
