Draft: All-Time Cricket Sixes

The final piece of my jigsaw, Ian Botham, who can smash it out of the park, and smash the batsman’s stumps too.

My final pick
Darren Sammy

"Sammy has a reputation for bowling long spells and his medium-fast pace bowling is used to support strike bowlers. He has commented that "We all have roles in the team and I've clearly understood what my role is in the team, which is to build pressure and be the workhorse of the team. I've accepted that and that's how I've played throughout my career." He aims to do this by bowling dot balls to create pressure. Sammy feels that because he is a support bowler batsmen relax against him and are more prone to make mistakes. A consistent bowler, though he does not move the ball much Sammy delivers the ball with an upright seam and uses the crease to vary his angle of delivery. As a batsman, his strike-rate in ODIs of 98.11 is the second highest amongst West Indian players who have faced at least 500 deliveries (behind all-rounder Andre Russell on 119.34), and in ODI innings of at least 25 runs holds the second, third, and fourth highest strike rates of West Indian players."

Overall, I'm very happy with this team. I have power hitters in every spot, as well three pace bowlers and two spinners.
  1. :wi: :ar: Chris Gayle
  2. :eng: :ar: Tony Greig
  3. :ind: :wkb: MS Dhoni
  4. :saf: :ar: Jacques Kallis

  6. :sri: :ar: Angelo Mathews
@VC the slogger to finish out his team

Jasprit Bumrah. He'll be my yorker specialist. Ideally, I wanted Wasim Akram and either Lasith Malinga or Sunil Narine, but they're all unavailable so I guess I'll have to go with Jasprit Bumrah instead.

:aus: :bat: Victor Trumper

Peak performance
: 335 (205) vs Redfern, 1903
*Had his 22 fives counted for sixes, this would have been 357 runs
Another peak performance: 293 (181 mins) vs Canterbury, 1914

I'm glad I checked this time and didn't just assume that Trumper was gone. He is the player with some of the highest peaks of any batsman ever to play the game: a pair of three-hour spectaculars in particular stand out. The first came in a Grade game; in an era where sixes were only worth five, he hit 22 of them en route to a frankly ridiculous 335. It is the innings that has become synonymous with him; his monument. The second was just over a decade later on Arthur Sims' tour of New Zealand. Coming in at number nine - presumably for reasons to do with a sticky wicket - he flayed 293 runs out of a three-hour partnership of 433. Both the score for a number nine batsman and the eighth wicket partnership stand as all-time first-class records unlikely to be topped.

And, as is important in this draft, Trumper could also bowl. His medium-pace was good enough to take 64 first-class wickets including two five-wicket hauls. In a Sixes game, he'd be a good pace-off option.

@Aislabie 's VI:
1. :eng: :bat: Graeme Hick
2. :nzf: :wk: Brendon McCullum
3. :aus: :bat: Victor Trumper
4. :aus: :ar: Ian Harvey
5. :pak: :ar: Wasim Akram
6. :sri: :bwl: Lasith Malinga

Of course, my 6th man is BASIL D'OLIVEIRA. How could it not be?

In the "coloured" leagues in SOuth Africa, he once scored 225 (out of a team score of 236) in under 70 minutes.... his first hundred came in 25 minutes. This innings started with five consecutive 6s and in total ended up with 28 sixes and 10 fours - that's 208 in boundaries.

Another time he scored 46 off an 8 ball over.

And of course he was a decent medium pacer.
  1. Roy Fredericks
  2. Garry Sobers
  3. Basil D'Oliveira
  4. Marcus Trescothick (w)
  5. Andrew Symonds
  6. Franklyn Stephenson

I mean, that's a scary lineup.

@El Loco is next

Coming in last it would be natural to assume I'd be hard-pressed to find someone to fill in that final vacant spot, but it really was a no-brainer in the end. I mean honestly, what format of the game doesn't suit this guy? The consistency Shakib has shown over his career has been astounding and has propelled him right up there with the greatest all-rounders of all-time. His temperament, aggression and match-winning ability will serve him well in this format and he slots right in, in his preferred position, at first drop.

1. :sri::ar: Sanath Jayasuriya
2. :eng::wk: Jos Buttler
3. :ban::ar: Shakib Al Hasan
4. :eng::ar: Graham Napier
5. :wi::bat: Clive Lloyd :c:
6. :ind::ar: Kapil Dev

Bam-Bam-Kenneth-Weekes1.jpg

I shall complete my XI with Kenneth "Bam Bam" Weekes. One of the few reasons this explosive Jamaican southpaw born in the United States missed out on a prominent Test career despite averaging above 40 at first-class level was because of his tendency to go, well "bam bam".. That and the onset of the Second World War in 1939. He could also bowl and keep wickets; the latter of which earns him a place in my explosive side where he shall have full license to go bam bam as much as he pleases. This means I have little choice but to make Mike Procter the last man in the XI (I mean VI), just let that sink in for now..

1) :ind: :bat: Rohit Sharma
2) :saf: :ar: Jimmy Sinclair
3) :jam: :ar: Andre Russell
4) :saf: :ar: Lance Klusener
5) :usa: :wkb: Ken "Bam Bam" Weekes
6) :saf: :ar: Mike Procter

I might as well complete this XI, I’ll take :aus: Albert Trott, the man who cleared the Lord’s Pavalion.
