If there was one thing that my team was lacking, it was a bit of Northants. Dennis Brookes is precisely that: he spent his 25-year first-class career with only one county, and did so with distinction: he averaged 36 with the bat in an era of three-day cricket when such an average absolutely marked you out as the best player in your county team. He was the perennial next cab off the rank but was called on only once despite appearing 14 times in the North versus South fixture. At his peak, he averaged over 40 for five successive county seasons after the War, and even as a 44-year-old, he still kept his standards high with 1,598 runs at 36.31 in his final season.

NMA's XI's first innings scorecard made for some interesting reading, with ALL the top seven batsmen recording half-centuries but none being able to reach that elusive three-figure mark on a very good batting wicket. Perhaps an extra spinner might have come in handy in the second innings where they were made to toil for more than 180 overs by the likes of Lucius Gwynn, CB Fry and Martin Donnelly, and would have to bowl part-time spinner Wally Hardinge for as many as 28 overs.

Perhaps an extra spinner might have come in handy in the second innings where they were made to toil for more than 180 overs by the likes of Lucius Gwynn, CB Fry and Martin Donnelly, and would have to bowl part-time spinner Wally Hardinge for as many as 28 overs.

After seeing their first innings score and our first innings score, I thought we were a shoe in for victory. Guess the lack of a spinner isn't going to bode well for me in this entire tournament.
