All-Time West Indies Test XI Draft

Look 'em up yourself ;)

42 Test wickets at 27. 13 ODi wickets at 18. 942 FC wickets at 19.52 and 364 List A wickets at 18.77. In 1985 he took a record 58 wickets at 12.72 in the South African domestic competition. He took 591 wickets in 9 seasons with Surrey at an average of 18.99 in the County Championship. Class act tbh, just born in the wrong era, competing with the likes of Marshall, Holding, Roberts, Garner, Croft etc. You boys missed out tbh ;p

So 42 test wickets at 27, crap :p

Nah I'd never actually heard of him tbh, sounds like a beast of a bowler though.

I'd heard a little about him, mainly from listening to David Gower mention he was the quickest he faced, but it wasn't until I was reading Wayne Daniel's Wiki page a few days back that I re-discovered Clarke; and you're right, he does sound like a beast of a bowler. He must have had some real pace if he was the quickest Gower faced, and he even had his 'quicker ball' analysed by Dickie Bird to see if he was chucking it was coming out that fast. Sounds like a right nutter as well, almost started a riot in Pakistan :laugh

Yes from what I heard from the local old men around me, Clarke seems to have had a thing for anyone that did not have his skin colour and used that ball as a weapon!! That incident took place in Pakistan where he was showered with stuff from the crowd while fielding on the boundary and pelted a brick into the crowd and knocked a kid out who need surgery, and lost his place on the West Indies team, and went to South Africa and was banned. They say he was built like a bull.

Clarke was pelted with oranges by spectators. He responded by hurling a nearby brick into the crowd,

:laugh Tbh if someone was pelting me with something I'd probably throw it back, maybe not a brick though.

Sylvester Clarke may have been a better bowler then Roy Gilchrist (my pick last round) but Gilchrist > Clarke in the nutcase awards.

You see Howsie, back in that period being a black man was tough especially as a sportsman and Cricket was seen as a white man game (no offense) and West Indian players knew then to be successful and respected they could only do and used one weapon and that was a ball and a piece of willow and some of them used then well, some of these guys just had brute force, from hard work, children of farmers, carpenters, woodcutters etc.... and some of these kids followed the same path and played cricket in their spare time and at school and developed and eventually got on the West Indies team!

I didn't know that, thanks ;)

I get what you're saying though

nice pick KP. I was debating between Daniel and Clarke but ended up taking Daniel because in his tests he did perform up to his standards.

Rabs your up

Yeah, I was torn between those 2 before picking Bravo, so you made it a heck of alot easier in this final round to pick Clarke. Looking at the stats though, Clarke played 9 of his 11 Tests in either India or Pakistan, they're not good places for Fast Bowlers, yet he still managed to take 21 wickets at 33 in India and 14 wickets at 17 in Pakistan whereas Daniel played 7 out of 10 Tests in England or the West Indies, much better places for fast bowlers.

There's not alot between them though, I just wanted the quicker, more deadly quick for my team, just to fit in with the rest of my main attack :D

yea Clarke did play in the subcontinent and it really wasn't fair to him to be dropped even after the performances there. man the WI were stacked.
Daniels action was the decider :D, could help it, cricinfo described it way to good.
also Daniel did take 12 wickets from 3 tests in India.

This guy will compliment my team very well, batted from 3 down to 7 in his career of 60 test matches, Larry Gomes averaged 39.63 with 9 hundreds and 13 fifties, and did limited bowling as well, he bowled right-hand spin and medium pace. He played at a time when West Indies had power hitters in the late 70s to late 80s, but he was of a different style, left-handed and a fighter, a type of Chanderpaul, he played County cricket for Middlesex and was Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1985.

just so you guys know I will try to make a team out of the remaining players that haven't been drafted.

Im sorry that I have to do this but Howsie has had enough time to get his pick in, he needs a wicketkeeper and I will select Ridley Jacobs for him.

Howsie if you have any problems let me know but I gave you enough time to get this pick in.

Deryck Murray
I was debating if I should take another batsman or go with a specialist wicketkeeper because I do have Walcott who can keep. In the end I ended up going with Murray because the batting order is already good enough and there is no need to play a batsman out of position.
