All-Time West Indies Test XI Draft

Pick: Richie Richardson

Explanation: I was really torn between 2 names for this pick, but in the end I decided to complete my middle order with another of the 80's stalwarts, Richie Richardson. Richardson was a fine player, averaged 44.39 in his career, making 16 Test hundreds. He saved his best efforts for the Australian's, making 9 centuries against them, a record bettered by only Sir Jack Hobbs. With his finest knock being a glorious 182 against the Aussies at Georgetown, which included 102 off the final session of the first day. Man the West Indies have produced some talent, I'm really liking my team.

1. Gordon Greenidge
2.
3. George Headley
4. Richie Richardson
5. Alvin Kallicharan
6. Rohan Kanhai +
7.
8. Malcolm Marshall
9.
10. Joel Garner
11. Colin Croft

I was going to pick Richardson to but I couldn't find a place for him, his record as a opening batsmen was rather poor so I couldn't put him their.

Jeffrey Stollmeyer

I wanted to complete my top order and I needed a solid opening batsman. Stollmeyer played 32 tests, averaged 42.33 and scored 4 centuries and 12 half centuries. Haynes and Stollmeyer give me a really solid opening pair.

Batting partner to Gayle. Roy Fredericks played 59 test matches, with an average of 42.49, 8 hundreds, 26 fifties. He was Gordon Greenidge opening partner before Des Haynes. He relished fast bowling of the 70's and also played for Glamorgan in County Cricket. Was voted Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1974.

Props to you Rabs, I totally missed Fredericks, excellent pick this late in the draft.

Nice. I sat in the Stollmeyer stand when I went to Port of Spain for the world cup, thus me liking this player :p.

I expect your vote at the end of this :p

Basil Butcher

According to Richie Benaud, Basil Butcher was one of the hardest WI batsman to get out. He played 44 tests, scored 7 centuries, averaged 43.11. Now I have my middle order all complete.

Bro I have to search for that bug you have on me, I had Butcher in my claws, same as Roy, but I had to choose one!! These guys did it without helmets and body armour, super pick!!!

I need a little time, to regroup, you knocked me out there :D

its getting tight man, it took me about 15 minutes to decide between Butcher and a few other guys.

Carl Llewellyn Hooper
His average was 36.46, with 13 hundreds and 27 fifties, he was also handy with his off spin bowling at an Econ. rate of 2.45, not forgetting him as probably one of the best fieldsman West Indies have had, could take a catch tumble, roll-over and his hat would never come off his head. Hooper was a beauty to watch, made batting look easy, sometimes to easy and it cost him. A commentator once said of Hooper, if Cricket was a Beauty Pageant Hooper would be Ms World!! He was that elegant.

Pick: Lawrence Rowe

Explanation: A very interesting character Lawrence Rowe. An elegant, enigmatic right handed batsman who strangely had an allergy to grass. It didn't stop him carving out a very good Test career though. He played 30 Tests, scoring 2047 runs at an average of 43 including a single and double hundred on debut against New Zealand. He comes into my team as an opening batsman, a position he only batted in on 14 occassions, which is very surprising given his record. In those 14 innings he made 795 runs at an average of 61.15 with 3 hundreds, one of those a triple century against England. Completes my main batting line-up nicely =]

1. Gordon Greenidge
2. Lawrence Rowe

4. Richie Richardson
5. Alvin Kallicharan
6. Rohan Kanhai +
7.
8. Malcolm Marshall
