Ashes 2013 - Australia tour of England June/August 2013

Watson opening makes things interesting especially if Cowan is kept as opener as Rogers has to be in the side.

I don't mind this batting order, Hughes at 5 is ok, he scores quickly enough to do ok anywhere in the order.
Khawaja at 3 is ok, he needs time to build a big innings.
Watson is best at opener.
Faulkner is not a test quality allrounder, and is barely ODI quality, his batting looks awkward, and his bowling will be useless on flat pitches.
If they must have 5 bowlers, then just put Haddin at 6, and Johnson at 7.
Johnson's form has been decent enough since his return from injury, as good as anyone, shame he missed out on selection, but the pace group seems strong enough.
But looks like Smith will be in at 6, and deserves to hold on to his spot after doing as well as anyone in India. This could be the "performance based" bit.
And Rogers will have to wait, because Cowan has done enough.

Bairstow for 6? Bopara? Back to Taylor?

I'd like to see England do something interesting here. Maybe give Morgan another go (even though that is very unlikely). He does bat well with the tail and will be aggressive.

Rob Key? Give him another go!

More realistically, Bairstow will probably get the nod; he will need a couple of big scores otherwise he could be under pressure.

Admittedly a little too late for him :noway He should have played more than 15 tests, however..!

Seam attack? Anderson, Broad and Finn? I really can't see Onions or Rankin getting the nod; Bresnan, perhaps.

Cook
Root
Trott
Pietersen
Bell
Bairstow
Prior
Swann
Broad
Anderson
Finn

I think that is how we will line up at Trent Bridge.

Cowan a 3. Khawaja NEVER MAKES his case.

Indeed, for all of Hughes faults one thing he has done so well is make runs when he needs to (not so much in the test arena). Khawaja continues to scratch around.

I don't know about Hughes at 5 given his weakness against spin

Yeah to be fair to Hughes, on the off chance he isn't out cheaply, he does score his runs quickly.

Agreed. Except for some reason Broad will bat above Swann.

The way Broad's batted since his ton against Pakistan all those years ago, I'd say there's a case for Jimmy batting above him!

Khawaja is beautiful to watch and very stylish. He just can't seem to get past 30 consistently. Would be interesting to see how many first class 30's he has.

Hughes might be hard to watch at times, but the guy has hundreds. First class, and test match.

I'm hoping Lehmann brings the best out of both of them.

EDIT: From 11 test innings, Khawaja has been out in the 20's or 30's 6 times.

I was expecting this top 6:

Cook
Compton
Trott
Pietersen
Bell
Root

Compton hasn't been all that bad has he? 2 hundreds in 9 matches, averaging 32 opening the batting. Solid first 9 tests IMO. Not setting the world on fire - but not terrible surely.

That would have been my top 6 before the home series against NZ, but it seems management just does not have any confidence in Compton. Maybe they think he doesn't scores quickly enough. They may bring in Compton during the series if things don't go well but I think Root will open in the first Test.

Not really sure what to make of the match against Essex. At least the lower order is scoring runs....
