Ashes-2023 England VS Australia 16 June-31 July

despite being a far superior side

You can argue that the whole idea of BazBall is to move the game from being about batting for a long time, where the Aussie lineup is deffo superior, to ball striking and quick scoring and claiming moral victories, where the reverse is true.

Such a shame we are unable to win a test series in England again despite being a far superior side. Not as big a gap as the one in the 2019 series, but still disappointing. However at least we are able to win ashes tests away from home.
Far superior side my arse

These are 2 well matched sides with very different styles. You could argue Australia have had really bad luck with Lyon’s injury. But then again if England had Wood in the first test I think we’d have won.

Neither is far superior. England look it when we have periods like this and are scoring quickly… but then when the Aussies are batting they don’t score so quickly but our attack looks less threatening (minus Wood).

England threw away Edgbaston and were stuffed at Lords.

I'm just trying to think of Australian test sides with a better pace trio then Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood.

First one that springs to mind is Lillee, Thomson, Hogg.

And it would have been when Lillee and Thommo were well past their best.

Lillee, Thomson, Alderman? I'm not sure if rebel tours prevented that one.

Yeah, I did consider that one. Obvs McGrath massively boosts any trio he's in. And with Warne as well? Holy shit you're going to win some cricket matches with that attack.

Seven tests, Alderman averaged 40, Thomson almost 40

Before Dizzy fell off a cliff in 2005 McGrath Gillespie and Lee was pretty ace.
That's who I was thinking of as at least close. They played 22 together, the current three have 25.

Only other that I could think of, not necessarily comparable but out of curiosity, was Harris, Johnson, Siddle who played England in that 5-nil series. 11 matches together and 8 wins although seven of those were in Australia.

Harris Johnson and Siddle weren’t really consistently excellent with Harris often injured, Johnson blowing hot and cold and Siddle being a pie chucker

Hughes and McDermott were excellent, not sure how often they played together or who the 3rd would have been: Alderman or Reiffel I guess. Decent but not in the McGrath / Gillespie / Lee class. McDermott had a bad injury record too
