Ashes Cricket 2013 General Discussion

What are you planning on doing about allowing for reconnections to complete a game? If a player wants to reconnect and isn't trying to quit they should be able to. We all have dodgy internet sometimes.

We've tied ourselves in knots trying to solve this in the past, and it's a very complex issue for various reasons. I agree: even in the event of a power cut, where we obviously can't control that, there must be something we can do to minimize the loss of any data.

Lots and lots of technical requirements (IE rules that all games must follow for various platforms) make it more complex that it seems on the surface. But we will try and find a way that satisfies the desire to save within those requirements.

Blimey! I pop away for a couple of days, and all of a sudden you're all turning Melbourne into West Side Story up in here! :)

Much as I'd love to see that dance-off (and I'm researching the rug-cutting abilities of everyone on our team right now), let's not get crazy! I'm a big admirer of Ross's strategy at Big Ant over the past few years, and I can't wait to see their game much like you guys!
The Melbourne dev community is awesome with some great talent there, but it's been seen some tough times and I'm always very chuffed when a game is announced.

I'm sure that I'm right in saying that your wishes/suggestions are hugely important in shaping both games, so please let's focus on those, rather that wasting time with some pretty vague long-range speculation about which game is better at this early stage: Rest assured we'll have plenty of time for that later when the games are actually out! :)

I wonder whether BarmyArmy was right (somewhere: i can't find the exact post!) about having a separate forum for general "Cricket Game Suggestions and Wishes", probably ideally split up into individual feature-threads ("Career Mode", "Stat Tracking", "Commentary", "Sound FX", "Batting Mechanics", "Bowling Mechanics" etc) as well as the threads dedicated to individual games? Maybe that would work well?
I dont know how many ppl think like me but personally i will buy a game which have Realistic gameplay and lots of editing options and custom tournaments

@Chief we have a reason to switch ;)
1)The game being developer's pet project
2)Career mode
3)Original and fresh approach to game mechanics compared to existing ones
4)Cool player editor
5)More resources (as they are sharing resources from other games)
6)Online play with lots of options
Mate you guys have to crank up the budget:D

I wish this competition doesnt go one sided...im expecting a nail biting finish on which one would be better. For us its good vs good...we just want the game to be great!

I am buying both the games. At the moment, we can't and shouldn't decide which of the two is better as it is not the right time to do so. Hopefully, developers see each other as a competition and give us two solid games in future.

@Cheif- I am sure you must have played Brian Lara Cricket 1999 as a Cricket Passionate Lover. You might agree with me that despite Ashes 09 and Ashes 10 were miles ahead of Brain Lara Cricket 1999 in Totality of Features but still BLC 99 had some ingredients which even today outnumbers the Ashes 09 and IC 10. I just want those features back Cheif. For Example, Different Crowd Noises of Different Countries made the Atmosphere highly Electrifying. Plus in BLC 99, Home Crowded used to Cheer more when their Home Team Batsman or Bowler Performs well. I feel that an effective Sound plays a great value to a Cricket Game and BLC Proved it. Plus BLC 99 due to its real features like different Sound for each country according to the counrty's culture and people, Acurate Weahter System coupled with Great Original Commentory and Analysis by Geoof Boycott, Acurate Pitch Conditions and explanations by Commentators Made it a VERY HOT GAME. While AC 09 and IC 10 despite being great games but they remained a bit cold and sometimes lifeless and you get bored after some Months. As far as BLC 99, People in this Era still wants to try on that game One More Time.

So Chief, Will my Dream Come true??? Will It be Superior than BLC 99? :)

Heh... Passionate Lover. It is called "Ask Chief"...

...but yes, I think "Atmosphere" is something that's really important aspect of any current game. You look at the success of these big sports franchises (and even non-sport) and they all have in common a rich sound aspect, whether in game-score or in the environment, the sound of the players, the sound of the ball being kicked, the cheering, everything is replicated in minute detail. A game such as Assassin's Creed the sound and foley work done for the clothing movements, the swords being sheathed and unsheathed... everything is done with such care and effort it's mind boggling. Obviously a "score" for a cricket game is pretty much irrelevant but that iconic sound of the bowler in his delivery stride as his feet go from grass --> to pitch --> to ball release has never, ever been replicated by a cricket game. Even the sound of getting "bowled" is taken for granted on television, but often sounds like rubber erasers being dropped in a bucket in cricket games...

Hey chief, just had a quick suggestion regarding getting music for the game. What about hitting up triple J and sourcing some of their unearthed artists? There's a pretty good mix of genres, it's supporting local industry and I'm sure the bands would be plenty keen to get the exposure so it should be relatively cheap!

One of the things that FIFA has done well is picking a great mix of music for their games. Yes they can afford to buy the big names now, but I remember they had a bit of cat empire back when they were just getting started.

Obviously not a huge priority for you guys but just putting it out there as an idea :)

Absolutely agree with this! Why hasn't it!? It's so easy to do!

I've had a little bit of experience making stop motion films, and one of the critical things is linking audio to movement. When it's synced well, the animation seems so much more realistic!

Logged on for first time in ages and what a little gem of a surprise!!

1 Question and its not particularly that big of a deal. Will the catching cam still be implemented. Sometimes I love watching the ball fly off the bat into the slips hands in cricket 04 etc. Something that in these latest games you could not see!

Will it still be there or have an option to turn off?

Cheers!

Absolutely... and it's about sourcing what SOUNDS right, not necessecarily what IS right. By that, I mean the SOUND of bat-hitting-ball (for example) is something that can be difficult to replicate in a non-match scenario, where there are other factors involved (quality of mic, mic location to the bat, processing) something that needs to be considered is not just recording the sounds in a controlled (studio) environment, but replicating the same sonics, which can be done by using the same brand of mic they would use on television inside the stump, or digital alteration of the sourced-sound so it's similar, which is something that's really easy to do inside of ProTools.

...at the very least, there should (ideally) be a few dozen examples you can replicate of ball-hitting-bat to give that variety inside the game for different types of shot. A "cut" shot, sounds very different to a pull, or a drive, or a slog. ....and then varying degrees again of how POWERFUL those particular shots are.

I think an "edge" is possibly the hardest sound to replicate, because there's a lot of factors involved, you're never going to get that one right as there's so many varying degrees of "nicking" the ball that it would be next to impossible, BUT... have 3 - 5 different versions again, would suffice and add to the reality.

Then you factor in crowds and everything else, Cricket is such a sonically rich game, you gotta find that happy balance.

Chief, what feature of AC13 that you can tell us of at this moment (or can't but are so excited about it that you will anyway) are you most excited about? Why?
