Ashes Cricket General Discussion

Perhaps BigAnt can ship off the code to a company with the competency and decency to fix it.

Nah. They're only paying customers, right?

Had an odd feeling reading that. Sort've 1/2 feeling, "hey mate, that's MattW. He's always polite and tries to provide reasonable answers. Probably only so much he can say. That was a bit harsh".

Meanwhile, the other half was thinking a lot of other things, "it's been ages now. MattW doesn't pop up that much anymore with answers. The sub-par AI, fields and stats are getting all the attention, nothing I've ever said. The beta is obviously only recently resumed and will seems like it's going around and around on AI strategy alone. AO Tennis got incremental improvement patches. They actually have a lot of attention on a new bloody La Crosse! Yeah Captain OZ, stick it to them".

So we are back to actually managing bowlers and setting fields rather than tweaking parameters to get a decent game.....so Handscomb gets his fifty after coming out and punishing any width with a beautiful straight drive down the ground past Jimmy's glum face....nowt new there.....Broad is having a good day to say the least; the new ball has a very marked effect....perhaps a tad too much? But it was a seam friendly pitch, green and overcast so perhaps not too bad?....I am wondering what to do to counter Handscomb, have set a couple of men deep square .....then Broad gets him to edge a couple through the gap between 2nd slip ( I have only two slips in at this point) and gully and decide to take second slip out and have a first and third slip and bring gully in slightly to an 8th slip position.....two balls later Broad edges it to a delighted Root at....third slip...........Before Handscomb came in, Smith came out and got to 12 at a run a ball...then Khawaja was out and Smith just slowed right down...Handscomb took up the gauntlet and Smith has been content to tick a long......mentalities are having a huge effect on the AI batting in a very positive way.

Its actually very interesting to flick through the different pitch maps of the bowlers to see that although it is one user controlling them they give quite different readings......if you compere Overton to Broad for example there is a huge hole in Overton's pitch map where Broad takes four wickets!

Anderson getting tonked a bit, Ali struggling to contain, Overton largely ineffective and Woakes doing pretty well......but it is Broad causing trouble!

Hi, Thanks for the continous updates. can you please also provide updates on batting animations and further experience on batting?

Shame FRAPS is causing the PC to mess up as a highlights package would be too much. But as it stands 0 bullshi*t you lot are in for a treat. It’s proper cricket. With the AI not seeminly trying to follow a set run rate it feels so much more organic and natural. Edges are flying everywhere, bowleds clean and off inside edges. LBW’s all sorts.

Mentalities are clear and affect the flow of a game. Batter are slowing down or accelerating due to match situation..

Bowled the Aussies out for 320 odd and went for a little 10 overs bat....
ALSO... tailenders feel rubbish!!!!

Hey Wealey, like the edges so far and the improvement in general but want to raise a concern related to the edge in this video. It was an over-pitched delivery and should've been driven to the boundary. I sure hope that edges aren't random and you have equal chance of edging irrespective of the length. There should be a higher chance of edging while trying to drive goodish length deliveries whereas edging over-pitched deliveries should be rare unless you mess up the shot or timing.

If you make edging random irrespective of the length of the delivery it will end up making judging line & length pointless. Hope that isn't the case and over-pitched deliveries (half-volleys) can be easily punished. Maybe you can test it a bit more and check with Big Ant folks so it's not an issue when the patch releases.

Edit: And I'm also hoping that type of wkt has an impact on the edges as well. You should be able to drive with impunity on flat tracks without too much risk, and that driving on the off side isn't a "random number generator" for edges irrespective of the line, length and type of the pitch.

Great feedback......fedge me......we +need to be critical, fair enough, but acknowledging the good that is happening is also part of that process. Anyone who wants this game to be the absolutely perfect game is going to be disappointed until the end of time....it's about immersion and narrative....the game has bucket loads of that at the moment.......with some warts as well...the process is just beginning....

Any info regarding career mode fixing? like organic player growth based on performances and player ages being fixed?

Without wanting to be a smug git, what we can show is what is being worked on: so if we aint showing it, it is not being worked on....yet. The focus at the mo is to have an allround balance between bat and ball in the longer format.....then shorter formats........there is a long list of stuff......when, how, who, what, why is all unknown.

The reason for showing some things here is to get something of a positive vibe going amongst all the doom and gloom: To repeat again: we can only talk about stuff that is being worked on and our experiences of that: any future speculation is out of bounds whether it be content or release dates or whatever.

But there is a list: everything anyone has mentioned is on it: how much that can be ticked off is pure speculation.

If that's not the feedback you are looking for, what exactly are you looking for? If you don't want any constructive feedback simply say so. The reason for my previous comment was that in the past we've seen Big Ant struggle with balancing the game. Do you recall the inside smashes into the pad in DBC 17 post Patch 4? That happened coz folks said there are no bat-pads and hey presto you had bat-pad smashes galore to the extent that AI had 6-8 dismissals of the kind in an innings.

I don't want edges to go the same way, i.e. few edges in the game ending up in "so you want more edges? there you go... now you will have 1 in 3 every time you play through the off". I want to make sure we have a game where you can get bundled out for 150 in bowler friendly conditions but also able to score 600/4 in on flat wkts. If this isn't constructive feedback I don't really know what is.

Seems like you guys are 20% or so into the big job. IMO it's definitely better to wait, than to get them intermediate bug fix patches.

Agreed, but it needs to be balanced with that what is going well......if things are posted here and the only thing people are picking up on is a. this isn't right and/or b. is this being fixed? it becomes a chore..... it wasn't just a fling at you...but generally.....I appreciate you delving into the edges and having feedback on that but if you don't compare it say to and edge that is realistic in your opinion then it is hard to find the balance.....

It's nice that humans are edging, but the physics of both of those are really bad.

The first one, a full pitched ball, prodded and caught on the jump flying over the slips head. You can say we are being too critical but the bottom line is, if what I see doesn't make sense I've no reason to believe it happens organically but is more a dice roll. If I don't believe the physics why play it?
