white is a crap bowler but good bat, and he'll never get into the aus team on his batting alone end of story.

Having seen his bowling enough to know he can spin it a good amount, I would suggest he is perhaps bowling differently at the top level in an effort to be as accurate as possible.

Nerves do get the better of players too. So maybe thats why Cullen isn't turning it.
Give him a few more games and he'll come good. Lots of commentators and batsmen from FC rate him.

Nah, you just said that you have to spin the ball to get wickets, obviously not the case if an absolute hack like White is outperforming our next big thing. Of course you and I know that the only reason his average is even approaching respectable is that he only ever brings himself on to bowl a few overs at the tail, and the stats argument is a load of crap, but let's not let logic interfere here.

Having watched ING games he does spin and drift it a fair bit, probably just terrified of bowling a few ordinary ones on debut and getting hit around ;)

I saw Cullen bowling at the WACA in the Warriors last Pura cup match there. He was great, barely a bad ball bowled, he ended up taking 5 wickets. Spin, Bounce, Variation, had it all.

Was very unlucky in the 2nd innings with WA not looking for runs until the final session.

Yeah I agree, it's difficult to make that tranisition with confidence, and as a result you stray from your original gameplan. I'm assuming he's afraid to give the ball more air and draw the batsman out with his variations as a result of the obvious insecurity he has in the side and being a little tentative when trying to make an impression, so he opts for the 'accurate' approach and loses sight of the instinctive aspect that has gained him the opportunity to represent Australia in the first place. Taking that step further to compete at the international level, even if it is against Bangladesh, with confidence and instinct is alot easier said than done, though. His subtlety and arrogant approach on the field is what has impressed many, and from what I've seen of him at FC level, he's looked like a player with options.

does anyone think there will be any changes to the lineup for tomorrows game?...i thought things went rather smoothly on Sunday so i cant see any changes.

I can't see any happening. Maybe Dorey in for Cullen, or maybe Hopes in for Cullen. Thats assuming the pitch won't take much turn. If it does then no changes.

I can't really see any necessary changes to be made either- persisting with Cullen will only benefit him and allow enough time for the confidence to grow, before he can ease into his natural game on the international stage. The chance to put into practice the lessons learnt from his previous international experience so quickly after its conclusion can only assist an emerging player. Hopes won't really do much in terms of the team balance in my opinion, and even putting Cullen in a situation where the pitch actually isn't conducive to spin bowling could test his ability to think on his feet and develop gameplans suited to various conditions.....

I agree I wouldn't mind seeing Cullen playing all 3 ODIs, but if our selectors will agree with us is another question.
We don't need an all rounder in the form of Hopes as Lee, Hogg and Bracken are more than capable with the bat.
Hopefully they find a way to get Cosgrove in the team but I can't see how they would.

yep no real need for Hopes, Lee is a better batsman than him anyway imo, and obviously a better bowler.

why is Hopes referred to as a medium pacer when he bowls the same speed as Dorey who is classed as a RFM?????...weird

Who knows, I always thought he was a medium pacer as well, then I saw him bowl balls in the 130+ range. So clearly hes no medium pacer.
The Aus selectors at one stage viewed him as an opener, that was so funny watching him open. I was hoping that he would go well but he basically disappointed in the A games. Never rated his bowling even after seeing him bowling at a decent speed.

yeh i was disappointed in his bowling in the VB series....a bit like Watson in that he got no movement, in the air or off the pitch...useless really.

Watson was at least getting into the 140km/h. If he could stay injury free for long enough we would be able to see his so called new swing that people have been talking about.

Hopes, batting is as good as White, bowling too close to call.

hmm i read an article written by DK Lillee in the local newspaper about how Watson told him the work they had been doing on his outswinger was coming along. And i just thought....if its taken the guy this long to figure out how to bowl an outswinger then clearly hes not a natural bowler??
