I feel that players should be aloud to abuse the umpires. Lets face it, they arn't doing their jobs very well at present. Ever since that Ashes series, the standard has been absolutly disgusting.

Everyone may criticise umpire performances but still obviously can not abuse umpires. If that was to occur then it would detract people from taking umpiring as a profession and leave the game with a disgusting image. Why don't you try umpiring on the international level, let alone domestic level before claiming that umpires should be abused. It is a very difficult job and respect that umpires are human and not hawkeye, snicko or any other electronic device.

Well, that's the routine for Bangladesh, but it's still disappointing coming off their 'moral' triumph of the other day. They're obviously a developing side, but they really have try to maintain their aggression and confidence in order to achieve success as a unit, and in turn progress mentally, because if that is attuned well, the other aspects will slowly fall into place. But they are facing the world champions, many before them have failed in an attempt to maintain pressure and aggression on the field against the relentless attitude of Australia.
Strange side selected, Lee could've done with a rest although it wasn't really expected, and it was a good opportunity to blood Johnson or give Bracken another chance to show his worth. Err..a little strange on Clark, but that's the inevitable outcome when a cluster of 30 year old debutants are selected. Gillespie seems to be at the forefront for the Ashes now, but the 'momentum' is constantly changing...

Kodos dont go by what those biased commentators were saying.

Seems to me like there was a miscommunication(that a word) 3rd umpire and umpires messed it up.
Ponting then went and queried what the actual decision is and why, so the umpires then spoke to 3rd umpire and made the correct decision of out.

3rd umpire must have been trying to judge if the ball was hit or not, replays showed inconclusive evidence so 3rd umpire couldnt give it out and wrongly pressed the green button.
Umpires had already agreed it was hit all the 3rd umpire was supposed to judge on is if the ball hit the ground or batsmens boot.
Also when a catch is referred to 3rd umpire i believe the lights arent even supposed to be used?
He's supposed to give the decision to umpires and then the umpires give the decisoon on the field.

I havn't seen what you are talking about, but I cannot imagine a third umpire getting a call wrong, that would be unbelieveable.

Rubbish!

Sorry, just your first line is very wrong. Anyway in the England v India series there was an instance of the third umpire getting a decision wrong.

Also the point about umpiring being disgusting since the Ashes is also quite wide of the mark, it is pretty much always up to the same standard, just sometimes commentators make a meal of mistakes, and sometimes fans do. Mistakes always exist, they are just less obvious sometimes.

It is a very tough job, and with the introduction of more and more technology it gets harder because every decision is analysed over and over again. End of the day just have to live with the mistakes that are made, as a batsman capitalise when you get a life, and as a bowler be grateful when you get a wicket.

tottaly agree puddleduck, as an umpire it is IMPOSSIBLE to please everyone, and even just a bowlers dissapointment can make an umpire question his credit. Umpires are there, and they NEVER make mistakes, simply errors in judgement. its that simple, and when looked at from that angle, well, we all make errors of judgement.

Fair enough to the third umpire then, I never saw it.

And I did over-react about the abuse thing. I am not in a good mood at the moment as one has just cost us big time.

Yeah mate, I saw in the NZ v SA thread, when it happens against you it's the worst mistake ever and game-turning. However when it goes in your favour, it is just part and parcel of the game ;)

Although a bit off-topic, not that this game will be the most interesting to talk about for the next 3 days, It was KP. He hit the ball back to the bowler who took the catch, it was referred to the 3rd umpire to find out if it was a bump-ball, watching the replays it clearly went straight back to the bowler, but unbelievably the 3rd umpire gave him not out  One of the only times Ian Botham was silent

I'm not going by what the commentators are saying and I am just having my own interpretation of the incident and to me I don't think the umpire pressed the wrong button. From what I saw Ponting pressured the umpire to reverse the decision. If Ponting can set this standard then probably all cricketers in future will do the same.

well on catch decisions i believe the 3rd umpire is not supposed to touch the buttons??.
Thats what happened he pressed the green light Ponting knows the rules and has gone to the field umpire and said whats going on why was he given not out.
Explained to the umpire that its not upto the 3rd umpire to have final say on whether its out or not he has to refer it back to the field umpires and then they give the decision.

Should be happy that in the end the correct decision was made.

I dont like the way the aussies pressure the umpires its not good and it will only increase as more an more teams adopt that style of appealing.
But in this situation Ponting was well within his rights to question the umpire on what exactly the decision was.
It was miscommunication between field umpire and 3rd umpire to blame.
3rd umpire was judging if it hit the bat instead of if it hit the ground or foot.
He couldnt tell if it hit bat so gave it not out.
After Pontings questioning field umpire asked did the ball hit his boot or the ground 3rd yumpire said boot so he was given out by the field umpire.
Thats how i read it and mark Waugh is the foxsports studios was thinking along the same lines as that.

Hopefully we get to hear from the umpires themselves what exactly went on out there but i doubt it.

121 runs behind, 9 wickets in hand, bowled out the Tigers. We are in a very good position :) Some great bowling from Gillespie set it all up for us!

Gillespie's return to form is good news for Aus. McGrath, Gillespie, Lee & Clarke will make a potent attack in the ashes series and Aus can rely on Warne & McGill for any spin backup.
