Australian ODI tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland, June-July 2010

Easier said than done, go find another player that can anchor the innings and then hit out not to mention have the technique to survive in the difficult conditions. We would all love to have 7 Morgan or Hussey in our team but that just isn't possible. If you find one then by all means replace him with Clarke but until then we are stuck with him.

Is Callum Ferguson back from injury yet? :p

Think hes still recovering, hes one option but I question his ability to survive through the tough stuff. e.g. 11th Match, Group A: Australia v Pakistan at Centurion, Sep 30, 2009 | Cricket Scorecard | Cricinfo.com It is early days and we will have to see him play more games but it's a risk with Hopes at 7.

For mine Clarke is fine as long as a big hitter is there with him. Today was a rare occasion where he was left in the final few overs, usually he has tried to up the tempo and got himself out before that period and usually White or Hussey are at the other end or still in the shed. On this occasion I suspect he knew he had to stay there and anchor the innings even in the remaining overs.

Fair enough. :yes

In a perfect world Flintoff would be batting @ 6 looking ahead to the 2011 WC & Wright @ 7.

Of course. I have just totally forgotten about ol' Freddy Flintoff. Yea he would be the man for the No. 6 position. Where is he nowadays?

The point is that if Hopes' bowling against Ireland was bad, then you can hardly even call Watson a bowler.

Never said it was bad. Not saying Hopes it bad. What i'm saying is because we have Watson as the 5th bowler this means that we don't need Hopes as an all-rounder therefore we'd be better off playing a pure batsman.

Which is fine in theory, but in practice the captain has to be able to trust that fifth bowler. On the short term, Watson has been expensive. He hasn't bowled 10 in an ODI since India last year and he was also the weak link in the Twenty20s.

How did Hazlewood bowl?

I thought he was pretty average tbh, I really don't understand why he's on this tour with the World Cup less then a year away because unless Australia go through a massive injury run he wont be there. Surely playing guys like Nannes and Tait would make much more sense at this stage?

Regarding Ryan Harris's speed, Mark Richardson said while Australia were on tour in New Zealand that he looked to be the quickest bowler Australia had on that tour (so he thought he was quicker then Mitch Johnson).

Tait in SC? no thank you.

Hazlewood is a future talent, and who knows if he bowls well against England he could be in the WC squad. It's not like we got anybody else atm, most are injured.

On the whole, Johnson is faster, but in individual performances, Harris' quicker days would easily be faster than Johnson's slowest. However, he is also deceptively quick; quite fast off the pitch; so perhaps Rigor was more referring to visual sensation of quickness rather than the speed gun readings.

Aussies did miss Johnson yesterday.

Morgan is too be watched throughout the day.

Yeah he was. He and Simon Doull were talking about the Aussie series on the Cricket Company (iirc) and Rigor thought that after watching all of the Aussie bowlers on tour he thought Ryan Harris looked to be the best and quickest of the lot.

the surprising thing about harris is that he bowls pretty quick of a real short run-up.

It's interesting how much focus has been on the bowlers, when so many Australian batsmen were their own worst enemy; much more so than their counterparts. Obviously the bowling is a bit undermanned, but I think it's a red herring, at least in this instance. In fact, I would say Harris' wickets were well earned. The difference between the two sides yesterday was Morgan's hundred and it took, by Australia's own standards, soft batting to make that the key point. Four batsman average over 40 in that side. You shouldn't see too many games where seven get 20 and only one of those gets past 50.

Love how this was on FTA. Maybe we'll see this for all international Australian games in the future, fingers crossed.

The only thing I'm really looking out for in this series is for Ponting to get amongst the runs. Played wellish last night and sort of gave his wicket away, so hopefully he can step up in the next few like he did last year.
