Australian ODI tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland, June-July 2010

He would give it a nice balance yea. But given that AUS are likely to take 4 quicks to the WC. I cant see him leapfrogging anyone of Tait/Bollinger/Johnsons/Harris.

Plus if Lee comes back strong in the 2010/11 FRC. He also will be ahead of Bracken in the pecking order. Overall i reckon the selectors have closed the door on his career deep down.

Agree. I like Bracken, and he's very underrated historically - he'd be close to an All-time Aussie ODI XI for me, but he'd have to do really well I reckon to overtake his new competition.

Yea, thats the only problem with him slightly. In a perfect scenario Clarke would score his runs(a 50) in the middle overs & get out in before the last 10 overs begins. Which usually has been the case since his game has changed since 2007.

Its just in this series when he has ended up batting in the last 10 overs. He isn't batting with a hitter like White, Hussey. His lacking big-hitting ability which makes him a joke T20 player gets exposed.

Its a minor flaw that i think we could tolerate from him. Since 90-95% its not going to cost Australia.

Summed it up pretty well. Your #4 isn't meant to be an awesome finisher. He's typically going to be batting overs 15-40.

I really think that generally fans are sucking too much T20 juice. This series Australia have struggled to get through to the last 10 overs with a decent amount of wickets in hand, yet all we're seeing from fans and posters is suggestions of how to be more attacking: play Warner, promote Smith etc. I can't see how that's going to get us to the last 10 in better shape.

Australia's number 4 batsmen for the last 20 years have been excellent finishers, except Clarke. He just doesnt have the shots. When Martyn moved to 4 he provided some great late order hitting after coming in early. Clarke really stands out for his lack of big hitting. I would say he's the least aggressive batsmen we have picked since Hayden in 93.

But I suppose you can't drop Clarke down the order. As people have said, he doesn't have the range of shots or the big hitting to score quick runs at the tail end of an innings. He needs to be at the top because that gives him time to build an innings, play himself in.

Thing is, I don't see Australia going past 300 if Clarke scores more than 50 and seeing as the 2011 World Cup is going to be held in the subcontinent, we are probably going to bat on a few flat tracks that are going to be great for batting where 300 will be a very chaseable target. For me, Clarke will generally ensure we get between 250 and 300, but on the flat tracks, anything below 300 against South Africa, India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan (on a good day) will be quite tough to defend.

Speaking of All-Time Australian ODI XIs:

1. M.Hayden
2. A.Gilchrist (wk)
3. R.Ponting (c)
4. D.Jones
5. A.Symonds
6. M.Hussey
7. M.Bevan
8. S.Warne
9. B.Lee
10. N.Bracken
11. G.McGrath

Thoughts?

I don't agree. Clarke on tracks were spinners would be most often used will be very handy. Just imagine someone like White batting in the middle overs where the spinners are on, now that would be terrible.

There are some plausible position swaps, but at least one batsman in the team simply needs to adapt better to their role.

Undefeatable, but of course it has lost! Incredible to think they all played most of their career together, except Dean Jones.

Well, Clarke out of the final ODI. Finally a chance for Marsh. Long overdue on this tour IMO.

Cricinfo had him at 3 earlier, and Sky have Marsh down at 4. Who knows where he's going to come in.

Don't know where that sound came from, but it appeared to me that it could only have been from the bat. Technology suggests otherwise though, so who knows. Fair enough decision to give it not out.

Yeah I saw him at 3 as well, that can't be right!

Coverage only starts in 90 minutes for me :( They're showing an Adam Sandler movie instead!

I'm with you Gazza, this is tweaking bullshit, they advertised it for 7:30 even...Big Daddy, possibly the worst movie I've ever seen, too.

Watson gone :D Pretty rank delivery from Broad, was basically a long hop that was smacked to mid-on. Can't complain though, Broad's had a fine series, deserves the luck.
