BBL|11 - Derp's Megathread + General Discussions

11.2: What a shot! Jason Sangha bowls and Finch carts a half volley 94 metres back over his head. That shot also seals the Thunder's third position on the table barring a landslide win for the Hurricanes, and the Sixers' second position.

Surge taken to start the 14th
13.4: Six for Chand! He hit it higher than he hit it long, but it arcs just over deep mid wicket.
13.6: Nearly again! Chand pitches that one just inside the rope in front of the sightscreen. Expensive over from McAndrew

2/124 from 15. 47 needed from the last 5 to win, with Finch still in.

15.3: WICKET! Chand's season is over. Picks the man at long on with a well-hit but not well-hit enough drive. 3/129
15.4: Merlo with a lovely shot! Reverse sweeps Tanveer Sangha first ball to the rope. Finch congratulates him.
15.5: Even better! Merlo is the king of the reverse sweep!

17.2: McAndrew's disaster night continues! Finch helps one on its way past Gilkes and to the fence.

18.4: WICKET! Merlo's cameo ends. He ramps one directly onto the stumps. 4/161

Nine needed from the final over. There's a chance of a super over here, one which would determine the Brisbane Heat's fate in terms of the wooden spoon and quite literally nothing else.
19.2: WICKET Sangha take a bow! He stops a blazed cover drive and returns the ball straight to Sangha to run out Harper, on a semi-suicide mission to get Finch back on strike. Well done. 5/162
19.3: WICKET! Renegades gonna Renegades! Finch, after a brilliant 82, picks out Daniel Sams at deep mid wicket! Nine needed from 3, can Sutherland or Boyce (again) be Melbourne's hero? 6/162
19.4: OH OH OH! Sutherland replicates Finch's shot but gets every bit of his massive rig behind it and sends it 95 metres! 3 from 2... prime Super Over territory here!
19.5: Misfield allows a single that would have been completed anyway. One for the Super Over from Boyce's only ball, two or more for the win.
Tension...
19.6: BOYCE SLCIES IT DIRECTLY TO SANGHA! THE THUNDER WIN BY ONE BALL! Boyce down on his haunches. Not the end he deserved. The Renegades are wooden spooners for the third competition in a row. Thunder congraturlate Boyce for his nearly matchwinning hand, as he rightly deserves - excellent sportsmanship from the men in green. 7/169

And with that, dinner

Tonight is Glenn Maxwell's 100th game. Here's the lineups:

Stars XI: 1 Nick Larkin, 2 Beau Webster, 3 Hilton Cartwright, 4 Joe Clarke (wk), 5 Glenn Maxwell (capt.), 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Tom O'Connell, 8 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 9 Clint Hinchliffe, 10 Sam Elliott, 11 Brody Couch.

Stars X-factor Subs: Sam Rainbird, Xavier Crone.

Hurricanes XI: 1 Ben McDermott (wk), 2 Caleb Jewell, 3 Matthew Wade (capt.), 4 D'Arcy Short, 5 Tim David, 6 Peter Handscomb, 7 Mitch Owen, 8 Josh Kann, 9 Wil Parker, 10 Will Sanders, 11 Sandeep Lamichhane.

Hurricanes X-factor Subs: Jordan Thompson, Mac Wright.

Hurricanes resting all their bowlers ahead of the finals, including Scott Boland who has apparently returned from the Tests a bit sore. Stars, meanwhile, bring in young Sam Elliott for experience I guess.

1.1: A bold decision to open with Darcy Short backfires. Maxwell whacks him to the fence back over his head.
1.2: That's hit even better! Six! 12 from the first two balls of this over.
1.4: Clarke cover drives him away! This is getting very expensive...
21 from.

2.2: Three overs of spin in a row, and Maxwell strikes Sandeep up and over mid off for four.
2.3: Four more, this time through backward square!
2.5: Carbon copy of 2.3! Sandeep's travelling too!
2.6: Another sweep through backward square! 18 from it. Stars rolling!

3.1: An all run four through point! The Hurricanes finally turn to a quick in Sanders and he's finding it hard too.
3.2: This time Clarke finds the backward point boundary! Jewell looks stiff in his attempt to stop it.
3.5: Maxy carves Sanders away over third man! A bit edgy but four more.
3.6: Steered to fine leg this time! 0/63 from the powerplay. Tim David looking like Rashid atm...

4.2: Maxwell sends a similar shot from Owen now!

0/71 from 5!

IT'S RAINING FOURS & SIXES AT THE G!

5.2: Maxwell brings up 50 from just twenty balls in his 100th game!

6.1: SIX! Clarke now goes, and goes big back over his head!
6.2: Top edged four now. This is getting expensive...
6.4: Straight six from Maxy! This reminds me of that game with him and Nick Pooran!
6.6: WICKET! Clarke goes trying to replicate. Josh Kann breaks the 97 run from 42 ball partnership.

7.5: Parker was doing very well, but then he served a long hop on leg stump to Maxwell who got all over it and sent it to the fine leg fence.
7.6: Straight back down the ground! Four more. Maxi is playing a special knock.

8.2: Out comes the uppercut! Stars and Maxi on fire.

9.2: Maxwell HAMMERS that! Sends a Short long hop eighty-three metres back into the stands.
9.3: Four more through cover! Maxi to 87. Could he make a ton before the ten over mark?

1/130 from ten

10.2: Whacked away to the rope at fine leg! Maxi to 95.
10.3: Now ran to the third man fence! Maxwell is properly unstoppable. The inexperience doesn't help either.
10.4: MAXWELL TO 100 FROM 41 DELIVERIES! Second fastest ton in BBL history, and joins Simmons (the man with the fastest), Khawaja and McDermott in having multiple in one season. Special, special, special
10.6: WICKET! Thompson gets rid of Larkin, who misses a straight one. It's not Maxi but it is a wicket. 2/141

11.3: Reverse flick! That's an incredible shot! Maxwell can do anything.
11.4: Cover drive now! Honestly I'm getting tired of blogging every boundary here!
11.5: Now through point! Stoinis, who has an outstanding ton of his own in the same way, is very happy with watching this. His record 147 may be under threat...

Two important things that I missed:
1642585818923.png

13.1: Stoinis joins the party! He just clears long off and gets six more.
13.2: Same shot, even better! Stars are taking out their anger on the Renegades!
13.3; long off this time! Stoin going to try for six sixes!
13.4: Nope. Just the 2 that time.
26 from the over. This is looking like Dubai with all the high towers.

14.4: Another straight four from Stoinis, who is beginning to be bood by the crowd because they want to see Maxwell get the biggest BBL score ever.
2/196... from fifteen overs

15.6: A good over from Thompson draws an edge. But that edge goes to the third man fence, as is the usual for this game.

16.3: Through to the cover fence! Stoinis is rolling too.
16.4: Same shot, same result. Stoinis going on fire!

17.1: Straight, flat and Maxwell goes to the second highest score of BBL history.
17.2: Over extra cover now! 12 needed for that high score.
17.3: Short just misses a catch in the deep! Superhuman dive but he can't catch it and four runs result from it.
17.4: Reverse paddle sweep to the fence!
17.5: Another reverse sweep takes the Stars to the highest score in BBL history and Maxi equal with his batting partner for best innings ever.
17.6: Only two this time, but two takes Maxi to yet another record!

18.1: Hooked six for Stoinis! He makes his fifty from 23 balls. Now give Maxi the strike for a shot at the T20 world record innings!
18.4: Stoinis finds the rope again! Short misses another half-chance in the deep by misjudging the flight, then slides into the rope and breaks it in half. That kinda night for Hobart... Stars started the season with a record loss, they're ending it on a much happier record.
18.6: Six more! This is just inevitable right now.

19 needed from the final over for the T20 highest score in history. Maxi needs to score 27 of them to make the international record.
19.1: He's not getting the individual record but Maxi gets his 150 with a single! Over to Stoinis to gun for 279.
19.2: That's the longest hit of the night! A long six over mid wicket... let's see... 102 metres! If there's an extra, Stoin may also find triple figures!
19.4: Outstanding save on the fence stops one run for Maxi. Maybe his final hit of the night? If they're to get the world record, one would hope that is it for him.
19.5: Single. Sad. A six, or an extra, needed to tie the record.
19.6: Just one, which is disappointing, but 2/273 is a properly incredibly outing. The Hurricanes all come over and congratulate Glenn Maxwell (Sandeep with the big hug, and also shout out Short for congratulating Stoin on his great 75 too), and why wouldn't they? 154 from 64. I may never watch a finer T20 innings. Hobart shellshocked - luckily with their B attack. Jordan Thompson deserves credit for his 1/32 from three overs. Nobody else bowled well, but they're all 20 right?

Hmm, here we go.

1.1: McDermott won't lie down. Six over fine leg. 84 metres, solid hit. He's done a miracle chase before...

2.1: Ramp to the fence! McDermott looks in decent form.
2.5: WICKET! Jewell drags a wide one from Couch back onto his stumps! 1/20
2.6: Thompson is sent as a pinch hitter, and gets an edge down to the fence!

3.1: Webster is brought on to steal a PP over and gets punished with a big shot back over the sightscreen by McDermott.
3.2: Six more! He just clears deep mid wicket from a Webster dragdown.

4.3: Thompson swings and drops O'Connell deep into the stands! 87 metres. Hurricanes won't die quietly
4.4: WICKET! He 'dies' immediately. Thompson miscues badly and TOC takes the catch from his own bowling. 2/46

5.1: McDermott with another six! Hinchliffe drops short and McDermott aims at the dancers on stage and nearly finds them.

2/56 from 6

7.5: WICKET! Wade has to keep going hard and he picks out O'Connell at long on. 3/67

8.4: McDermott is showing why he's going to make the Hurricanes tricky to beat on his own. Dispatches TOC straight down the ground.

Only 52 needed from the 10th to get the Boost point... predictably doesn't happen. 3/86 from ten.

Why do so many part-time spinners bowl in the Powerplay in the BBL? Don't see it much elsewhere, maybe in England?

10.3: Short drives Elliott back past him. A good shot.

11.1: WICKET! McDermott is gone for a lovely 55. Makes the mistake of picking Cartwright in the deep. 4/94
Why do so many part-time spinners bowl in the Powerplay in the BBL? Don't see it much elsewhere, maybe in England?
It's not all that common usually, but it's partially because teams are pace strapped (the teams tonight, for example, are missing five of their six starting pacemen combined to injury or conditioning, as well as a few key backups). Also because Joe Burns, Matt Renshaw and Tom Cooper have done brilliant in the role of opening over sucker in the past

13.2: Maxwell finally blots his copybook! Misjudges a chance at short mid on, does well to get a hand to it, but can't hang on.
13.4: Crunched by Short! Along the carpet and into the fence just wide of the sightscreen.

14.4: Handscomb joins the fun! Big hit goes straight back over O'Connell's head for six.
4/119 from 15. The Hurricanes are showing at least a competent performance, unlike the Stars in a less extreme but similar situation earlier in the tournament.
