BBL|11 - Derp's Megathread + General Discussions

10.1: Short all over that from Sangha! Sends itninto the advertising at cow corner.
10.4: WICKET! Short's gone. Plays across the line, sweeps, but is pretty plumb there. Jason Sangha gets the breakthrough... not the Sangha you expected eh? 2/91

11.4: WICKET! Sandhu breaks through! Head doesn't get any of an attempted flick and sends it up and deep to Ross at deep backward square. 3/94

13.2: Cockbain continues his innings though! Drills Jason Sangha back over his head for a huge six!
13.3: Now he goes precision rather than power! Exactly splits Chris Green at long on and Daniel Sams at deep mid wicket and grabs four as a result.
13.4: Three boundaries in a row! This is a beautiful sweep and it brings up Cockbain's second fifty. 40% conversion rate, not bad...
Nice to see Iain Cockbain getting some franchise cricket and doing well. See he's been picked up for PSL too.
relevant timing

Surge taken to start the 15th
14.4: Wells with a huge hit! Gets onto one dropped back from Sams and hits it 90 metres down the ground! Second biggest hit I've ever seen from Wells, only after one that cleared the SCG Members Stand a few years back
3/136 from 15

15.2: Six for Cockbain! Just clears Sams at deep mid wicket.
15.4: Cockbain's flying. This time it's a lovely shot through cover all the way along the ground and into the rope.
15.5: WICKET! McAndrew snares the big wicket of Cockbain. Backs away and tries to slash it through backward point, but splices it and Sangha holds onto a simple catch at backward point. 65 for Cockbain, great innings. 4/146

4/149 from 16, dinner's up so gtg

0.2: Lovely little sweep from Hales! Just beats the keeper and goes for four.
0.5: Life for Hales! He hits a high ball, but gets it well enough to clear Siddle and not dismiss him.

1.6: Four for Khawaja! He gets off the mark by clipping a loose one from Conway off his hip to the fine leg boundary.

2.1: WICKET! Hales replicates the shot at 0.5 but even worse, and Siddle takes a good catch running back! Henry Thornton with the huge breakthrough. 1/15
Thornton's wicket list: D'Arcy Short, Alex Hales, Dan Christian, Glenn Maxwell, Ash Turner, Chris Lynn. Like Hayden Kerr, he improves with opponent quality
2.4: Good shot by Sangha! Works Thornton off his pads to the fence.
2.6: Cracking shot! Creamed through cover by Sangha.

3.2: Flicked nicely by Khawaja to the fence at fine leg. Too straight from Siddle.
3.3: Another one full and straight, and this time it's a beautiful off drive to the boundary.
3.5: Sangha drives Siddle back down the ground. That was a good ball but an even better shot from Sangha.

4.3: Short drops a bit... uh, short. Khawaja capitalises by finding the fence through mid wicket.

1/52 from 6

6.3: WICKET!? Fawad Ahmed dives in to make a catch, and claims it wholeheartedly, but Khawaja ain't moving! This is going upstairs, soft signal out. Has he got his fingers underneath? The decision is in... the board has failed! but there's a red light from the umpire's booth! A technical malfunction heightened the drama there, but Khawaja is gone to a lineball chance and the game is well and truly in the balance! 2/56 Note: Cricinfo's comments are vitriolic about this decision. This is a rare unpopular but correct BBL decision - it feels like it isn't correct on replays, but the TV umpire is following the rulebook, and it is out due to inconclusive angles and the soft signal.

8.5: The treatment from Ross! Thornton gets a no ball for stupidly bowling a second bouncer in an over, and Ross capitalises to send the free hit 90 metres over mid wicket.

9.4: Sangha hits one twice! Not deliberate of course but he edges it so badly he gets it in his swing followthrough too.

2/82 from 10. The Thunder have a good platform to launch, but they need someone other than their star openers to fire.

10.2: Lovely paddle from Sangha to the fence.

13.2: Ross breaks a long boundary drought with a nice clip off his legs! Running has been good though and it's beginning to swing in favour of the Thunder thanks just to that.

2/128 from 15. The Strikers get away with rolling through Travis Head for an over too.

15.1: Big effort for Renshaw on the mic! He gets to the ball and tries to palm it in but its momentum keeps it going through that and into the rope.
15.5: Thunder beginning to move! Sangha shuffles down and takes Fawad back over his head (and the sightscreen) for a big six.

Surge called to start the 17th.
16.1: Incredible timing from Sangha! Looked like he had it on the slipce of the bat, but he's chipped it back past Siddle for four!
16.2: WICKET! And the game turns again! Sangha and Ross did great, and they actually nullified the controversial decision, but Sangha completely mistimes a full toss and Wells takes the catch at mid on. 61 for Sangha, 3/146
16.6: WICKET! Siddle vs Sams now: 4/4 from 9 balls. Sams is unhappy but there's no reason for him to be as he's plumb in front. Perfect yorker from Siddle, and the Thunder in trouble at 4/150

17.2: Cutting off the mark first ball with a boundary! A glance from a gift from Conway. Not the ball that should be bowled at this stage.
17.5: Cutting beats Siddle at mid on! Close run thing but it's four.

23 needed from 12.
18.2: Too straight and short! Cutting belts it to the square leg fence.
Two huge moments from the rest of that over. Firstly, Ross brought up his fifty. And secondly, Siddle has something looking like a back spasm or other back injury. Bad news if the Strikers progress - but for now they have 14 runs to play with in the final over.

19.1: Conway plonks Cutting! They get a 'leg' bye - more like a head bye - but a bit of a delay to check Cutting's helmet.
19.2: That one goes over Fawad! Ross only just clears short third man with a thick outside edge, and it runs away to the fence. 9 from 4
19.3: Swing and a miss from Ross! Huge dot ball. Three balls left in someone's tournament.
19.4: WICKET! Major collision in the outfield but nobody is injured, thank goodness! A big top edge from Ross, and it carried almost directly to Thornton at short fine. Trouble is Alex Carey misjudged it and went steaming full AFL style into Thornton. In the mess, the ball sticks in Thornton's hand, who gives Carey a 'what drugs are you on?' look and celebrates. That could be game as they did not even cross. 5/176
19.5: WICKET! Cutting in disdain! He picks out the man at long off. Game over. Some discussion will be had about the Khawaja decision but Ross and Sangha played better than him on the day; the lower order has cost this one. 6/176
19.6: Dropped! Conway will be unhappy as Wells just misses one in the deep, but he gives Wells a hug, so no hard feelings. They've qualified to the final three somehow. Siddle looks quite mobile, which is good news. Ricky Ponting says that it's one of the best games in BBL history and I have to agree - a tier down from the New Year's Miracle etc, but a outstanding game nevertheless. Thunder finish on 6/177 from their 20, and just miss chasing down 180 for just the second time this year. They go out, while Adelaide win their seventh in a row and progress to become arguably the favourites for the Qualifier in a couple days time. Cockbain player of the match to @wasteyouryouth 's utter delight.

See you for these Strikers taking on the Sixers on Australia Day (please no political discussions about it in this thread)!

Glad that the Thunder lost, now Hales will be available for Islamabad in the PSL sooner :D

Sydney Sixers: Justin Avendano, Hayden Kerr, Jake Carder, Moises Henriques (c), Jordan Silk, Dan Christian, Sean Abbott, Hayden Kerr, Ben Dwarshuis, Jay Lenton (wk), Nathan Lyon, Stephen O'Keefe
X-factors: Jackson Bird, Lloyd Pope

Adelaide Strikers: Alex Carey (wk), Matt Short, Ian Cockbain, Travis Head, Jonathan Wells, Matthew Renshaw, Thomas Kelly, Henry Thornton, Harry Conway, Peter Siddle (c), Fawad Ahmed
X-factor subs: Jake Weatherald, Liam O'Connor

As someone who's not exactly supporting the Sixers (don't hate the franchise, just sick of them winning a la Scorchers in the middle of last decade), I find their absolute lack of batting depth fairly interesting. Jay Lenton and Jake Carder come in tonight's squad for Philippe (COVID) and Dan Hughes (ankle). They won't have Philippe back for the final should they make it either, and Hughes would be a longshot given he failed a fitness test today (although they would get Jack Edwards back from close contact isolation). By the way, Kerr is mistakenly listed twice on the teamsheet - it remains to be seen if he's opening, or batting seven.

Strikers unchanged.

Well s--t that aged well. The Sixers will have Hughes back for the final - the only reason he isn't playing tonight is that it is slightly too sore to be able to pull the ball (source; Dan Hughes), and you know that Harry Conway will just start bumping him if that's the case.

Game starts ten minutes later than usual, by the way

0.3: WICKET! Carey splices one and picks Christian at mid on. O'Keeffe witha nother opening over wicket. 1/5

1.5: First boundary! Short plays a great off drive and it just beats mid off to the fence.
1.6: WICKET! The underdog Sixers are starting very quickly! Abbott gets one to bounce a bit and Dan Christian, now at slip, takes his second. Adelaide have to test their batting depth now at 2/13

2.2: Cockbain now with a drive! This one is square and goes straight to the fence.

3.4: WICKET! Sixers on fire to start, and particularily Abbott! But the Strikers won't feel as bad as they should at 3/21 as that one from Abbott stayed low noticeably - the pitch is bouncing variably. Head goes, though, and it's time for some of the unsung Adelaide heroes to stand up 3/21

3/26 from 5. Rebuild needed, but the Strikers do have top-5 batsmen all the way down to 7...
