Story Beneath The Southern Cross - The C2005 Australia Story

Thanks leftie and yes Bala Brett Lee's chiseled good looks seem to have diminished but i guess it doesn't really matter if you can bowl at over 150 clicks and tear apart a batting line-up.

Andrew Symonds continued his spell at the opposite end to Jason Gillespie in a bid to get some of the part timers overs over with whilst the West Indies batsman were reluctant to attack in the fear of losing wickets and digging a hole to deep to get out of in the later overs. Little would have though that giving the ball to Roy Symonds would not just result in allowing the front line bowlers to bowl the majority of their overs near the end of the innings but it also got Ricky Ponting and the team a crucial wicket. Shiv Chanderpaul was victim to a ball that bounced like a tennis ball on a full length outside off and the result was a diving catch taken in the well placed short cover region by the skipper Ricky Ponting himself. The wicket off the last ball of the 17th over now has the West Indies in trouble with just 80 runs on the board and 3 batsmen in the shed.

Ramnaresh Sarwan now strolls to the wicket with the threat of the West Indies being bowled out before the 50 overs are up. The Australian bowlers are firing on all cylinders at the moment and it is going to take a special effort from at leased one of the West Indians to turn this match around and at the moment it looks like the best candidate is Morton who has spent all 17 overs so far at the crease for a hard fought 30. It looks like he is starting to settle down now and score at a comfortable rate along the carpet, which is nice and safe. Luckily for the Windies they have a long batting line-up in today so this match is definitely still on.

West Indies 3/80
17 Overs
Run Rate ? 4.70
Projected Total ? 235

Morton 30(41)*
Chanderpaul 19 (38)*

McGrath 0/24 (6)
Lee 2/24 (4)
Gillespie 0/19 (4)
Symonds 1/11 (3)

Thanks for the support boys I really appreciate it. For those of you who are wondering Slats broke both his legs and his career is over. Im looking forward to the Australia vs India matches to Surendar, should be a very interesting contest between two of the bets one-day teams in the world. Cheers.

Brendan Julian:
Glad you could join us yet again in the studio. Junior if the West Indies lose any more wickets within the next 6or 7 overs they will be in big trouble.

Mark Waugh:
Yeah the Australians are really closing in by setting attacking fields and ignoring the fact that they are allowed to have more then two men outside of the circle.

BJ:
It?s a pretty smart tactic that Ricky Ponting has adapted here just having the two men outside the circle at the moment despite being in the 18th over. It means that the West Indies have to attack to score runs and attacking is something they really don?t want to be doing at 3/80.

MW:
It just shows how good of a team these Australians are and im sure they will go on to win at a canter in this match. If Morton gets out now the West Indies are really going to find it hard to compete on a wicket that is starting to play tricks

BJ:
It?s interesting that you mention the wicket as it does seem to be doing a bit now as apposed to what it was in the early overs. Could we be seeing some deterioration already in this match?

MW:
Id hope not as it?s going to make this a very low scoring match but we?ll have to wait and see I guess.

BJ:
Given the fact that the West Indies are down 3 wickets what do you see as a good total for them now?

MW:
It?s getting harder to pick by the minute. The projected run rate has them scoring at around 220 or so if they keep it at 4.5 to 4.70 from here on in. I?d be saying that 200 looks about what they will score at this point in time.

BJ:
Alright well Ramnaresh Sarwan has made his way out to the middle so we?ll rejoin lay with the West Indies at 3/80 at the start of the 18th over.

Andrew Symonds looks to be the new man of the hour after Brett Lee?s breath taking opening spell. This time Roy Symonds medium pace has picked up the wicket of much needed danger man Runako Morton. Again it was the full length delivery that did the trick with Morton attempting to drive through the covers but he got the edge and Gilchrist took a beauty diving away to his right to take a one handed catch. This means real danger for the West Indies who are now 4 wickets down and in desperate need of a partnership to get them past half way.

Some of the credit for these two wickets that have fallen in quick secession must go to Jason Gillespie who has done a great job holding the West Indies back with textbook line and length. Marlen Samulels is the new man in for the West Indies and it is probably fair to say that if the Windies don?t string partnerships together in the lower order they will be in a lot of trouble now that the top 4 batsmen are in the shed. Australia have only needed the assistance of 4 bowlers to get to this point. Lee and Symonds both have 2 and the pitch doesn?t look to great for batting at this point in time especially with the overcast skies still hovering over the ground. Rain might be the only thing that can save the West Indies in this match.

West Indies 4/83
18.3 Overs
Run Rate ? 4.53
Projected Total ? 226

Morton 31(46)
Sarwan 2(4)*

McGrath 0/24 (6)
Lee 2/24 (4)
Gillespie 0/21 (5)
Symonds 2/12 (3.3)

Brendan Julian:
Welcome back to the studio as a result of the 4th wicket to fall and well Junior this match is getting a bit one sided at the moment just in the 19th over and the West Indies behind the 8 ball as far as runs on the board go.

Mark Waugh:
Yeah the West Indies are going to need to pull a rabbit out of a hat to get back in this one. The logic for the Australians will be that they have gotten rid of the top four so the rest of the batting order shouldn?t be a problem with this pitch giving some assistance.

BJ:
And Morton getting out to an away swinging ball that he probably should have scored off. That with be crushing for the West Indies who really needed Morton to score at leased 50 to get them headed in the right direction to a competitive total.

MW:
Yeah not a great shot from Morton. It was probably a bit lazy more then anything but I don?t think Andrew Symonds will be complaining he?s not the kind of bowler you expect to be taking 2 wickets in under 4 overs.

BJ:
Sometimes it just goes your way which is the case for Symonds at the moment. Marlen Samuels is the new batsmen Junior. How do you rate him as a player?

MW:
We sore a few glimpses of him last summer in Australia and he definitely showed that he could hit the ball powerfully however there are doubts about him in a situation like this where it?s important to just push the ball around and accumulate runs and not lose wickets.

BJ:
Well the Australians still have plenty of bowling options to chose from with Brad Hogg yet to be given a spell and Brett Lee still with 6 overs to bowl do you reckon we?ll see another short spell from Lee Junior?

MW:
Some time in these middle overs he?ll be given a spell. When that is will be up to Ricky Ponting but I don?t think he needs to give the ball to Lee yet with Gillespie and Symonds doing such a good job.

BJ:
Alright well we?re all set to cross back to the ground now. It?s Samuels on strike to Symonds with the West Indies in trouble at 4/83

The top for West Indies batsmen in the shed signaled the call up of Brad Hogg to the bowling crease for a spell of left arm spin. The burden is firmly on the shoulders of Ramnaresh Sarwan and new batsmen Marlen Samuels. The partnership started to work well rotating the strike and pushes balls into gaps whenever possible. The West Indies have used the late cut down to 3rd man very often in this match to good effect but they may also be luck with a couple that narrowly missed the edge and the stumps providing anxious moments. The Australian fielding is also of important note as they boys in the field have picked up at ground level caught and thrown into the stumps well so far in this match cutting the West Indies run flow back.

Andrew Symonds was still in operation at the other end and in some very fine form keeping the scoring to a minimum. Sarwan pushed one out to cover off the last ball of the 22nd over to bring up the team 100 for the struggling West Indies. The batsmen looked to use the sweep shot against the left arm spinner Hogg and the drive against the medium pace of Symonds at every opportunity.

Shortly after the West Indies brought up 100 and looked to be getting things back on track through Sarwan and Samuels Brad Hogg went up for an appeal off the first ball of the 24th over. The shout looked to be optimistic at best as Samuels padded up to a straighter delivery angling across the stumps of the right hander. A long delay, much longer then usual for Steve Bucknor but eventually the finger went up with the batsmen and probably even the bowler in disbelief.

The slow motion replay showed that Bucknor got it wrong in reducing the West Indies down to 5 wickets but it?s in the scorebook now. The straighter delivery hit Samuels well outside the line of off stump. Samuels was spotted saying something to the umpire prior to leaving the field and word has it that an investigation into the matter may take place with the incident being reported to the match referee.

West Indies 5/101
23.1 Overs
Run Rate ? 4.37
Projected Total ? 218

Sarwan 10(12)*
Samuels 9(20)

McGrath 0/24 (6)
Lee 2/24 (4)
Gillespie 0/21 (5)
Symonds 2/19 (6)
Hogg 1/11 (2.1)

Brendan Julian:
Back in the Fox Sports Studio again with the fall of yet another wicket. Junior that one must be devastating for the West Indies just as they were starting to build some sort of partnership past 20 runs and Samuels is triggered by Steve Bucknor in a terrible LBW decision.

Mark Waugh:
Couldn?t of said it better BJ. We all understand that sometimes the umpires get it wrong but that one didn?t even look anywhere near out to the naked eye. I guess that?s the game of cricket you just have to take the good with the bad.

BJ:
The drama didn?t end with the decision either with Samuels having a go at the umpire over his verdict. Do you expect anything to come from that?

MW:
I wouldn?t be surprised if it came in front of the match referee. The ICC is very strong on defending the umpires these days and you just can?t shoot your mouth off to an umpire.

BJ:
This pitch doesn?t really favour the spinners so that?s a big wicket for Hogg although that particular ball didn?t spin much at all. The West Indies are going to struggle to bat out the overs and get to 150 at this rate Junior.

MW:
Yeah there?s no secrets, these blokes are in a lot of trouble. Ramdin is the new man in and he isn?t that great a batsmen. Sarwan is the absolute last chance for the West Indies now. Your right in saying that Brad Hogg would have liked to see a more spin friendly wicket when he turned up today but he has bowled well so far.

BJ:
The Australians on the whole have bowled very well today and deserve their rewards. What do you see for this attack in the future.

MW:
I think it goes without saying that this is one of the best attacks in the world and the good thing is that there are so many fringe players capable of doing damage as well. Very promising signs for the future.

BJ:
Alright well it?s time to go back down to the ground with Dinesh Ramdin the new batsmen.
