Problem: Bowling Experience in the Next Version

I am trying to find ways of allowing bowlibg to much more intuitive than it is: really having to control a number of factors to get the desired outcome, moving away from button pressing, like batting has done...

Do you think the problem lies with the controls more than conditions and AI batting?

My personal opinion is that the controls are let down by the bowling outcome primarily because of AI batting but also conditions etc.

I'm not saying bowling controls can't improve (I think you've suggested some real improvements) but that the current controls scheme with prope effects/variation in conditions with proper AI batting will give a better experience than your controls but similar conditions/AI failings.

What are the changes that can be brought to control system??

For me as of now, the change would be:

  • Bowler selecting runup line.
  • Ball seam and finger placement/position on the seam [if possible] set.
  • Start runup.
  • Jump as usual.
  • Release points as discussed determines the length of the delivery.
  • And as Dutch said Faster the push of release faster the delivery [if possible some alternate to fast push as difference between fast and slow push can be done but what would determine no-ball??].

I like the idea of choosing your grip instead of pushing a button for an outswinger or inswinger. Much better.

Likewise, the rhythm and acceleration of the runup is such a crucial part of real life bowling that I don't like it being on auto, but it's starting to get very complicated if user controlled. I've always wanted to have proper runup control, say controlling direction with right stick and speed with left stick or a trigger, but I don't know if that would really add enough to justify the extra messing about.

The current bowling controls don't really feel a great deal like real life bowling to me but I'd probably settle for that if the batting ai was really good.

Yes I'd like to know that, what would be the control to choose your grip?

Now you don't press a button anyway, it's angle of LAS.

For swing having the stability of your RAS movement reflect your wrist position would be good.

Also for hitting the seam or whether it wobbles through the air when bowling seam up deliveries. This would mean a change in how we choose the line. Again I like that the line is currently based on the RHS position on release. Although I think this could be improved on so that there was a variance in sensitivity depending on the bowler's rating, if that makes sense?

Well I was thinking of being able to position the seam fairly precisely. 1 analog control, possibly 2. I just like the idea of having to mess about trying to find the optimal seam position for various deliveries, being able to experiment to try and generate max movement with cutters, that kind of thing. Maybe some degree of choice as to how far the ball sits in the fingers, slower ball grips.

I guess that would be a pain in the arse every ball though.

I understand what you are saying and I agree to a point.
Using the current system it would be good if you could vary the angle of the seam to make it swing less or more. My way to do this would be if you choose diagonal left (outswing for a RH bowler to a RH batsman), depending on the position of the LHS between diagonal left and straight up, it would decided on the seam position. So closer to straight up would see the ball swing less than if it was positioned closer to the diagonal left.

What do you mean exactly?
Have no triggers be straight seam and then the amount you pull the right or left trigger would angle the seam in that direction - so all the way down left or right would make it horizontal, and then any point in between would be a slight angle?

That would definitely work for swing, seam up and cross seam deliveries, but then you would have to add in cutters and slower deliveries. Would the system have to revert to pressing a button to select these? If so, I don't think it would detract from the gameplay personally.

The triggers to tilt perhaps?

It does and I think it's essential. It must be different trying to keep the same line as McGrath and Harmison.

I like the idea of triggers for seam position, my only problem is, I have real difficulty with trigger control, when batting its either all the way or none. Any changes made I am happy to learn, but would there be an option to use the original controls, or map them ourselves perhaps?
