Arguable, the greatest batsman from New Zealand, ever.
With 723 runs from 10 tests at an average of 60, he holds one of the highest averages in Test crucket putting a 10 inning cutoff. Also, he made 2 centuries in test cricket.

My next selection is IFTIKHAR ALI KHAN - NAWAB OF PATAUDI.

The only Test cricketer to have played for both England and India, Pataudi scored a hundred on his Test Debut, the first test of the bodyline series at the SCG. He played only one more test on the tour, before being dropped due to his refusal to support bodyline and field in bodyline positions. He never played for England again, but would play for India later, captaining them on their tour to England in 1946, but by this time he was well past his best, which is why he averages just 19.90 from 6 tests.

His first class average of 48.61 with 8,750 runs and 29 hundreds is much more a measure of his quality. He uses up 1 hundred of my budget.

I’ll go with Michael Bevan.



One of the best ever players of the limited overs game, Michael Bevan was not too bad as a First Class player. In 237 Matches, he made over 19000 runs at an average of 57.32 with 68 centuries. Add to that, his game awareness, the sharp fielding, and some handy chinaman bowling, and you’ve got a complete package.

Also, costs me 0 centuries.

And here is the man who was my first choice realistic all-rounder. India's greatest Test all-rounder (fight me Kapil Dev) has been used mostly as a bowler, but his lower-order hitting has been extremely effective at Test level. He's a better batsman than a seven or eight though - his first-class triple centuries are well known, but what's less well known is that he averages nearly 70 at Test level batting at number six. Batting isn't his strong suit though - his strong suit is his fearsomely accurate left-arm spin, which brings him over four wickets per match at a cost of under 25 apiece. I'm really happy to get a key member of my planned team.

The greatest left-arm seamer in cricketing history by pretty much every metric that matters, but surely his three lower-order centuries would make him unattainable? I figured not if I managed to get five out of a selection of maybe ten possible players. Jadeja was the fifth one, and so I'm going to go for it and bring him in to bat at eight.
