Commonwealth Bank Series Feb-Mar 2011/12

If SL didn't whip us last time, I wouldn't mind Christian, Hilfy and maybe Doherty being rested to play the Ryobi cup final and having M. Marsh, Harris, Lee, McKay and Holland rounding it out. Really have to play our main guys, so Christian, Lee, McKay/Harris, Hilfy and Doherty.

Marsh cant bowl with a stress strain fracture...whatever haha.

I really want Christian and Watson to be in the same team, but I agree Wade needs to be higher in the order. so I'm glad I'm not the captain as I wouldnt know what to do haha. dropping Forrest would be the easiest choice as he is the newest in the team, but I do like him. its a nice problem to have tho.
I also really like Watson as a number 3. but you cant go in with 3 bowlers, as our fast men are just too good. so taking a big back flip from this morning haha, this is my XI.

1. Warner
2. Wade
3. Watson
4. Clarke
5. M. Hussey
6. D. Hussey
7. Christian
8. Pattinson
9. Starc
10. Hilfenhaus
11. Doherty

with Ferguson, S. Marsh, Forrest and M. Marsh as emergency batsman.
Beer/Krejza, Harris, Lee, Cummins, McKay emergency bowlers.

Ah yeah, forgot about M. Marsh's injury, but anyway, have to play Christian, Hilfy etc. since SL aren't quite the easy beats I expected.

That line-up looks a bit better than the previous one :p I think Clarke wants that #3 spot though and what Clarke wants, Clarke gets. Starc's been replaced with Harris for now too and Pattinson won't be rushed I don't think, but if it's a future line-up and not for the next game, it's not bad.

Possible line up for the Aussies now would be.

Watto
Warner
Clarke
M.Hussey
Forrest
D.Hussey
Christian
MCkay
Starc
Hilfy
Doherty

Dhoni's ban now makes it easy for the three openers to play together in the same game (since we need that experienced hand in the absence of Dhoni). But now its time to dust away the rotation policy and seriously play the best players. Hope we dont miss Dhoni in this game. Right now, he is the best ODI player in the world and its a huge huge blow to lose him to the ban. With Sri Lanka showing serious recovery signs, I wish we are not hurt by Dhoni's loss.

Our team for tonight ideally (??) should be this

Sehwag
Sachin
Gambhir
Kohli
Tiwary
Raina
Parthiv
Irfan
Ashwin
Praveen
Yadav

Rest both Vinay (has played all games till now) and Zaheer (he seriously needs to be slowly transitioned out of limited overs cricket as his fitness is seriously going down by the day). We dont need a fifth specialist bowler as Raina and Sehwag can handle that pretty well. And Kohli and Tiwary can also do some bowling.

Looks good apart from Starc dropped for Harris. Maybe it was the wake-up call Harris needed though and NSW can surely use Starc right now.

I agree, Starc a bit unlucky. Hilfy I don't think is a great ODI bowler, but I guess it would look ridiculous to drop him after a 5fer.

Warner
Watson
Clarke
Wade
Hussey
Dussey
Christian

Quite like that order actually :thumbs Clarke's best spot looks to be #3, as he's good enough to consolidate, likes picking tight gaps in the field in the early overs and can disrupt the spinners who bowl early. One of the Husseys of course could be fine at #4, but Wade is worth a shot, especially if you give him the license to hit whatever he likes the look of.

Not sure about this Ponting decision...yes he's had 5 bad innings, but Australia's won 3 of those games, another a last over loss. He's Australia's all time leading run scorer, averaged 40 in ODIs with 80 S/R in 2011 and has just had the best Test series he's had for yonks. Is 5 bad (but essentially meaningless) failures really enough to throw all that away?

Interesting Inverarity said "And we thought it wasn't right for Ricky to be in the squad and not play" Yet he thought it was 'right' to dump Ricky outright and perhaps force his retirement from Test cricket too? All to keep Forrest in the squad? That doesn't seem right to me...

Starc has been a bit below par since the opening match. Probably more my high standards of expecting him to get that lethal in swinger into the righties. Could do with another Akram chat though :p

This is not time to rest our best player. This is a very important match for India because our net run rate is also the lowest in all 3 teams.

Our top and middle order needs to perform. None of Sachin, Sehwag, Raina or Rohit has made runs so far in the series.

Praveen has not looked in good touch so far so I would continue with Vinay. I wouldn't keep out Zaheer as this is an important match for India and he has always done well against Sri Lanka. Ashwin and Yadav should be in there.

The only concern I have is Jadeja's batting. He hasn't looked in the best touch during batting. If we just take him for that "all rounder" spot, Ashwin is doing the same job for us as he is taking wickets against Sri Lanka and also making some useful runs. So that is the only confusion for this match.

Sehwag
Sachin
Gambhir
Kohli
Tiwary
Raina
Parthiv
Ashwin
Vinay
Zaheer
Yadav

Good news out of the Ponting press conference. No plans to retire, but has accepted he probably won't play ODIs again. Will play for Tassie, which I'm happy about, would've been disappointing if he said fearsome tweak it and left the game for good when he's always maintained that he's still got it.

@sp232426: Both Zaheer and Vinay were cramping up in the previous game, and Zaheer's fitness looks very fragile. Last game, he looked like a sloutch potato on the field. Zaheer the bowler is dispensable in ODI's. Praveen, Vinay and Yadav can perform pretty decently (with Irfan also as support). Regarding Vinay, one game of rest could do him good. He has played 5 games in a trot. Give him one game rest and play Praveen and keep him in the mix. Praveen had one average to bad game. He has been a reliable ODI bowler for years now.
