I happened to be talking to dad on the phone about xmas plans and mentioned the question, because i had no clue! He's a cricket boffin and said "Oh yes! they were the two standing umpires in the first test." I said how the h**l do you remember that, and he laughed and said because R.Terry sounds like artery, and he just remembered it from reading old books.

old people huh? lol

anyway ill start thinking of a question, but it probably wont be as hard as some of yours!

how about a riddle then?

one for eternity,
a famous fraternity,
no questioned paternity.
Captains courageous,
into countries as strangers,
One bold and contagious,
the other quite mild.
Who are we?

Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis?

One for eternity - Umm...
A famous fraternity - Vinod Mankand, Gavaskar, Sachin, Dravad, Dev, Shastri, Merchant, and many more legendary Indians...
No Questions paternity - The history of Indian's having royalty and family members playing (It's now what you know, it's who you know)
Captains Courageous - Dada!!
Into countries as strangers - Yup
One bold on contagious - Bold, Saurav. Contagius, Dravid (During India's winning streak)
The other quite mild - :p

not quite the fraternity i'm meaning :P

and it's not the Chappell brothers! there are clues in each line.

One for eternity, means they must have set a record. And the second line means they are well known. No Questioned paternity, their parents? Were they unknown? Or did no-one care from which country the were from...nah. Captains courageous, means they both were skippers. Into countries as strangers. Interesting. One bold and contagious, other was quite mild. Polar opposites.
The Hollioakes? Ben and Adam? Possibly?
The next best guess is the Waughs, but very unlikely.

Nope not the Waugh brothers, and not the Amarnath's either.

hint: look up what fraternity means.

that is one possible interpretation, but not what i was meaning.

Hint 2: Think in terms of what else eternity implies.

Another clue tomorrow if noone gets close.

What about the Benaud brothers?

By the way excellent question, nice to see something a bit different.

an excellent answer! But not the right one :D

and the Hadlee's, again a good guess but not the right one.

tomorrows clue will tip you to it if noone gets it before then.

You are on the right path. :boxing

Maybe it's the Gavaskars? Sunil and Rohan?
Chris and Lance Cairns is also a very good guess...
Alex Tudor? The Tudors ruled England for a while. Did he have a brother?

Fraternity:
Main Entry: fra?ter?ni?ty
Pronunciation: fr&-'t&r-n&-tE
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural -ties
1 : a group of people associated or formally organized for a common purpose, interest, or pleasure: as a : a fraternal order b : GUILD 1 c : a men's student organization formed chiefly for social purposes having secret rites and a name consisting of Greek letters d : a student organization for scholastic, professional, or extracurricular activities <a debating fraternity>
2 : the quality or state of being brothers : BROTHERLINESS
3 : persons of the same class, profession, character, or tastes <the racetrack fraternity>
Eternity means forever, after death. So they have passed away now...

I thought about the Cairns earlier but decided it couldn't be.

I'm not entirely sure if it is or not, but with yourself being a Kiwi what about the Crowe brothers. Jeff captained occasionally, and made his name over in Australia first. Martin batted on until his body could take it no more.

Again I think the riddle actually fitted the Benauds more than them, so I would be surprised if it was the Crowes :p

Thinking about it a bit more the Grace's seem to fit every part of that riddle, although they seem perhaps a bit to obvious.
