Should we ban the keeping of animals in zoos?

My Views:

I think we should ban the keeping of animals in zoos. They lose their abilities such as hunting and gathering food. Sure It keeps animals safe, but that animal is suffering from it. Its losing its rights. Its like keeping a human in Prison for no charges. Your kept behind bars, and you have limited choices. Why should the animal suffer for our entertainment? Some zoos let animals out at a certain age. I think thats even worse than keeping them for their lifetime! If you keep a Lion in a cage for a period of time, It begins to loose its ability, and keeping it for 2 years then letting it go won't help the lion, It'll kill it. It won't be able to survive even a day in the wild. Just like Madagascar

:p

I say definatly not. Many animals would be extinct if it wasn't for Zoo's. One is our native bird (in NZ) the Kiwi.

I think that cages are cruel but if the animals have nice big encousures then thats fine. Here we have a Wildlife Park which is big and spread out without bars. Maybe they just need to make law about a certain amount of space for each animal.

Should dogs be not allowed to be kept as pets? If you left them out in the wild would they be able to fend for themselves?

Just my thoughts. I don't know what the Zoo's are like around the world, but here in NZ and Australia (I have been to a few over there ;) ) They are good places.

It all depends which country you are in. The zoos here are just fine. The animals are looked after very well. Over here it's not like you can let Lions, Tigers, Elphants on the loose in the wild as where would they go? We don't have the big land area that Africa has. Our area is fill of hills and trees which are used for hiking, I'm sure Kiwis don't want to walk into a lion or tiger.

Ban zoos, because it is like a jail to animals, without any fault of theirs! But at the same time, sanctuaries should be there to protect rare species of animals!

Shouldn't the same apply to Dogs and Cats then? They didn't ask to be brought by people. Fish didn't ask to be put in a glass box. Yet they all are just like zoo animals have been put in zoos. I don't see the difference between these animals and the ones in the zoo.

A big no! to the Zoos if we are talking about the ones like in India. You should see the plight of the animals there! Usually animals prefer lin\ving in packs. But the zoos here have maximum one or two (if the appearance of the male and female are different!) animals. Most of the animals here crave for their freedom as they are locked up in cages. Their eating habits falter and last month a magnificient lion died in the zoo in my native place.

On the other hand if the animals are preserved in their natural habitats as in a sanctuary, they will thrive. But we have to take the poachers and the actors into consideration!

I'm not sure about the rest of the world but zoo's should definitely not be banned in Australia. They are a safe haven for smaller native animals like the Bilby who have almost been wiped out by introduced species. In Perth Zoo all the enclosures are open with plenty of space and things the creatures need for both survival and comfort.

According to me,

There are some animals like Dogs and cats or otherwise u cal it a pet animals.....which are brought up freely...No Zoos are needed for them!!!

But Zoos are necessary for certain animals especially the rare animals!!!!
The rare animals must be preserved not for their worth but to increase their family by keeping in one place!!!!

Wild animals should be left in their natural places...ie in forests!!!!

Generally Zoos can also serve as backups...If u wud have gone to zoo..then u wud have noticed that only few animals of each specimens are kept....So if any of thos specimens if found to decrease in future then those from Zoos can be used as backups to increase their family!!!!
But one thing is needed in generall,

In forests - Animals shd be protected from hunting ( this can be best implemented by the rule like " If a person is found to have hunted an animal then that person can be hunted by the animal of same species... ;):happy " lol )

In Zoos - Proper care of animals shd be taken.

These are just my opinions.....

(
/* just for fun */
Attention to pc.....
One leopard is roaming in PC......
See it HERE

Quickly catch it to Zoo.....lol :happy
)

Well zoos are doing some good work. Some endangered species could be kept in zoos so they do not extinct.Rhynos should be kept there so they could survive......................... but Barmy and ste a request for you! there are certain wild animals raoming around PC like black leopards and then kangaroo which is spammer1st should be kept in zoo so that PC ppl could remain safe!

yeah lets ban zoo's. let all the animals go in the wild so they can live in their packs. then we will see how long they last. probably a decade at the most before they get picked off species by species. obviously i think zoo's are the best way to go to keep the species in existance.

put animals in zoos
- be lonely but stay alive and re populate

release animals and ban zoos
- be really happy for a little while then get shot and die

There's no evidence to suggest they lose abilities to hunt and gather food.
Otherwise many animals released from Zoos (makes them sound like crooks) wouldn't survive in the wild.

Most of the Zoos in England and most of the EU keep Animals in good health within Zoos.

Without Zoos many animals would be extinct.

And if you get rid of Zoos on the basis of it not being good for them, then all "domesticated" animals should be released.

I have put quotation marks around domesticated due to the fact that Cats and Dogs always have a wild side to them.

Thats a very good question, but I think pets like dogs & cats do have more freedom as compared to zoo animals! And also, they get more care & love from their masters because the master has just 1-2 animals to take care of, while in zoos, the authorities have lots of animals to take care of, & they just cannot give enough attention to everyone of them! And if the authorities keep changing, the animals may find it difficult to trust & adjust with them too!

It's all very well saying sancturies not zoos. Sancturies are all based on donations and like it or not, not many people donate. Zoo's are run through an actual owner who plows the money in and are therefore more finacially sound. You have to remember; In some places, it's either being in a zoo or being hunted for there fur, ivory etc.

In this part of the world there is no cruelty. India/other places must be a different story.

I'm sure there is irottev.

I'd hardly say keeping a dog/cat confined to a small flat (as I'm sure some people do, as they do everywhere) is right for a "Domesticated" animal.
