Windows Vista Service Pack 1 - Finally the real successor to Windows XP?

I would do it, though, I would recommend having atleast 1 GIG(2 GIG's recommended) of RAM, and NOT having an Intel GMA IGP if you want to play games. If you dont want to play games - then fine, go for it.

I've been using vista for ages and I'm very happy with it, I much prefer it to XP. But (and its a big but)((chortle chortle))If your PC isn't new(ish) and pretty decent I wouldn't switch over to vista.

Kev, I know, it happens, but the instructions were for the worst case scenarios, as troubleshooting for some people can be cumbersome. :)

Travder92, you could've tried enabling and disabling the network to see if it worked - it worked for me though.

Abhas, best of luck. :D

i did.. many times... downloaded new drivers, reinstall the router itself.. the whole works.

odd indeed

Have had no problems so far, and I can notice some differences in my computing.

1. Gets back up pretty quickly from hibernation. My net would take sometime to connect back after hibernation before, but now it instantly connects.

2. Memory usage is much better. It loads much quicker than before.

And much more smaller things.... I like this SP1 update.

i installed it fine thru windows update.. worked fine..even freed up 20gigs of space on my HD :/

but it seemed to delete my network.. so i had no internet, it couldnt find my normal LAN network.. (well it knew it was there.. as it said it was.. but it only said it was enabled.. and not connected. ) there was no way to get it back on.. i tried for hours.. so i uninstalled the SP and now my network works fine.

what a pain in the arse... but atleast it kept my 20gigs of space!!

yes it frees alot of space.. I happy for you and everyone got space freed, it's nice to see a free spaced drive..

My PC is about 3 years old and I switched to Vista recently. I did buy a gig of RAM (to take the total up to approx. 1.25) and bought a 120 gig HDD before putting it on, but it handled it pretty well.

Got SP1 yesterday and recovered about 8 gigs of HDD space. Haven't much noticed any other differences, though.

Apart from visual treat I have not found anything spectacular in Vista. Infact it gave more errors than Xp and some programs dont install properly due to stupid Administrator permission thing.

I wasn't looking for anything spectacular. The start menu program search is one extremely useful tool for me. The searching seems to be a lot quicker as well. And while the permission menu may get annoying it definitely exudes the feeling of more control.

I have not received any free space...
maybe coz i was dual booting with XP, and vista used to show the correct space earlier as well....

Guys, for those of you who DON'T want to uninstall the SP1, here's a treat to free some more diskspace after installing SP1.

1. Click start, and in the search box type vsp1cln.exe
2. You will see a file in the programs column above.
3. Right Click and run as administrator.
4. Then press Yes.

The program will then cleanup the files. These files are actually those older files of your PC(Pre-SP1) Which were saved in case you want to uninstall. If you don't, then you can delete them. You can gain approximately upto 1GB of diskspace. :)

I've had absolutely no problems so far, and SP1 is better than its predecessor.
I'll use the cleanup tool to free diskspace :)
