Dec 3-7: 2nd Test: Australia v England at the Adelaide Oval

Hughes
Watson
Ponting (*)
Clarke/Katich
Hussey
Katich/Khawaja
Haddin (+)
North
Bollinger
Siddle
Hilfenhaus

TBH

North the specialist spinner. No Johnson, North's about as good as Mitch is with the bat anyways on current form. Hughes in, Katich drops to 6 since he's more likely to handle a shift in batting spot when compared to Watto. Watto 4th seamer. Khawaja in if Clarke injured, in which case Katich moves up to 4.

England unchanged.

I'd go:

Watson
Katich/Hughes (if Katich is out)
Ponting
Clarke/Khawaja (if Clarke is out)
Hussey
Haddin
Smith
Doherty
Siddle/Harris
Hilfenhaus
Bollinger

That gives us the luxury of dual spinners in tandem, four seamers and the chance to blood a couple of youngsters. Hussey deserves another shot given how he played in that first innings. Doherty looked really good I thought. Especially when he floated the ball a bit more. Young but give him time. Once he gets a bit of confidence the darts go. At least I hope. He should probably see out the series if we are serious about developing a young spinner. Probably two or three series. Overall, we lose a bit in the batting but we gain that much more in the bowling.

Dump Doherty, he is and always was useless, Test cricket is no place for left arm dart bowlers.

Dump Hilfenhaus, he has no bowling plan, just walks back to his mark, spins around quickly, then comes back in and tries to bowl the same crap ball over and over again, he lacks the game, the variety, and the pace to be anything but a new ball or green wicket bowler. At least if we dump him for this one we can bring him back into the team for Melbourne before he bowls himself out of the team for the entire summer.

Dump Johnson, he is useless, hasn't scored a run or taken a wicket in years, pathetic really, finally living up to the potential his crap action and wayward bowling always suggested.

Pick Smith for Doherty, and use North to bowl tidy overs if Smith gets tonked.

Pick Harris for Hilfenhaus, because he bowls with pace, gets bounce, and gets swing.

Pick Bollinger for Johnson, because he is quick, gets swing, bowls accurately, never stops trying, and has been our best bowler ever since he got into the team.

Dump Clarke if his back is no good, we don't need some guy scoring 9 runs off 50 balls and bogging us down, and then dropping catches for the rest of the game. Let him rest and get his back and his mind sorted out so he can come back fresh and healed and score more runs.

Pick Khawaja, because at least of all the young batsmen we think have "potential" he actually scores runs, and Adelaide is a nice place for a debut, could be a Mark Waugh/Greg Blewett style Ashes debut ton if they do.

Of course the selectors will do nothing, or very little, and will stay blindy loyal to these crap players because they are Australian and we like to back our boys in a crisis, but really, waiting til we are down 1-0 or until those players form is so dreadful they have to be removed because there is no other option is not good selection, we have to be proactive for a change and not just sit on our hands and idly sit by and wait for the changes to force themselves.

Oh, and dump Ponting as captain, look how good "his man" Doherty did bowling to "his plan", letting Ponting have even more control over the team is just plain wrong after the dreadful mess he has lead the team into.

Sure, we are missing some greats, but the team has no team spirit at all, and I think a lot of that is due to Ponting, he really isn't a very likeable person and we should dump him so the players can relax a bit more and start afresh with someone new and who might have a positive attitude to the job.

Ponting just thinks acting like a sourpuss Steve Waugh or Ian Chappell is the way to run the team, folding his arms and getting angry when things do not go well, sure, he should expect his team to perform, but really, getting angry isn't going to help, he just looks like a spoilt little boy who can't hack it when things don't go his own way, which of course, is what he is, and always was.

Won't help much bringing in a new bowling attack for Adelaide as the pitch is dead again. Best to let the current lot fail again, get a draw, and then bring in a new attack for Perth.

Yeah, let them all fail so we can dump Ponting, I think that's the plan, which though underhanded, is what's best for the team in the long run.
The end justifies the means.

Pffft, Australian selectors. I don't think it's just time yet to throw the panic button. Go in unchanged and we will win. Mark my words.

As i said in the other thread. North should be dropped & Doherty & the team IMO for adelaide & the rest of the summer as well should be:

Watson
Hughes
Ponting
Clarke
Katich
Hussey
Haddin
Johnson/Harris
Siddle
Hilfenahaus
Bollinger

On a flat pitch with no spinner at all in the team (Katich has his hand strapped and I've heard apparently struggling with a different injury to make the next while Clarke's back is shot) would be murder. Adelaide is going to offer barely any assistance for the quick men so you need a spinner to rotate around.

Ponting said that a few of them were knackered in this match let alone playing without a spinner.

Lol at Cricinfo calling Harris an all rounder. I wouldn't class Broad an all rounder despite a test average of 28 and a test century let alone a First Class average of 19.

Lol just amazes me what North has to do to get dropped. The bloke is more hit and miss than Afridi and at least he had an excuse plus his bowling would be dam handy for us. Harris and Bollinger are must for me, they get wickets and Harris is capable of bowling 145km/h and swinging it.

Really hope from an English point of view that Bollinger and Harris don't get in the team. Quite happy seeing Johnson in there.

Really rate Harris (probably more than I do Bollinger tbh)

The lack of a "quality spinner" yes. But IMO as it is now unless AUS recall Krejza you dont have that in Doherty.

Basically its a situation with AUS that Doherty i'm afriad will struggle to be effective @ Adelaide once ENG continue continue to bat well.

As we saw @ Adelaide 2006, the quick bowlers can get reverse swing on that ground (Brett Lee & Hoggard spell). So AUS chances of taking 20 wickets IMO rest with them.

The situation with AUS spinner can be summarised like this. You have a broken pipe with the water is gushing out (no test class spinner). No point trying to fix the burst pipe with insulation tape or scotch tape (keep trying average spinners who wont/dont have the ability do the job especially on wearing wickets/4th & 5th day turners). The water from the burst pipe is still going to gush out & you still cant use water from the pipe fully (the spinners are going to keep struggling & they are never going to win you games). Just wait until the plumber comes & fix the pipe so you can get your full water supply back (wait till a spinner in domestic cricket actually takes wickets ovet the course of a entire FC season then pick him).

Thus until the plumber comes, accept that given the pipe is burst water will keep coming out & you get the full force out of the pipe & dont try to fix it with temporarly measures (accept you have no 100% test standard spinner that will always struggle to take wickets on wearing pitches & dont pick one till preferably someone stars in domestic cricket - although some concessions towards raw talent can be made).

So now in order to get back your full water source until the plumber comes, you have to find other sources of getting water in your home. By for eg doing what people do in the 3rd world & have walk down the street & fetch water in buckets or ask your neighbout to full a bucket for you - although that will be stressfull given that your home pipe is down. (alernative source for getting 20 wickets is to select 4 quicks given your source of quality spin is down & accept the achillies heel from now that sometimes they will struggle)

Yes but by bringing in a spinner who probably isn't going to blow away teams but can keep things tight and pick up the odd wicket would be like adding a valve that could allow the pacers a break from stopping the leak if they don't manage to plug the hole quick enough.

4 (or five if we count Watson as well) will work if they have all the tools available for them to stop the leak quickly but if their spanner is missing or isn't as good as they wanted (a flat pitch) they could tire themselves out due to over the top yanking of various bolts with the spanner. Therefore having the valve will allow them to work for a longer period of time and fully fix the problem rather than working themselves into the ground.

I'd play Harris. He'll do what Johnson isn't at the moment, bowl fast.
