Draft time: World Cup history - ALL FINISHED!!

John Blain

Highest wicket taker for the Scotland team in the World Cup matches with 12 wickets in 8 innings. An impressive strike rate and an average of 25 makes him arguably the best Scottish bowler? Along with Bond, Akhtar and Streak, Blain completes my pace battery.

But Considering the fact that we are choosing the team for this WC. All pace attack might not be the right thing. You gotta have some spinners for Sub continental pitches. I'm picking my squad just keeping that in my mind. :p

I'm not sure we're picking a team for this World Cup in particular. It's all based on history and there's been more World Cups in England than anywhere else. So a hypothetical game for this draft would probably be at Lord's. And spinners have had different levels of effectiveness over history, so it depends when this hypothetical match might take place...

^So it's death by pace from anyone playing your team then?
Ha ha, well I thought that he can fill that position pretty well. And, yeah we aren't selecting this for the World cup in sub continent. I'm happy with what I've got so far. Hopefully, I'll be able to have a proper team.

AkshayS has got a touch over 2 hrs to show, and then we move on with Mr AngryPixel.

Oh and Angry if you make your India pick, then Akshay can make a round 6 and 7 pick when he gets here.

Do i really have to write my pick:p. Its the most obvious one and there is already more then enough posts about him on planetcricket. Any more would crash the server :spy

Fling..:mad I had it all written up. Wrote a massive post on my next round pick. Elaborating his campaign in 92,96, and 99. When i reached 2003, i accidentally searched for data in the same window.:facepalm all gone... I dont have patience to write all that now. Will do that in night.

So my picks for 6th and 7th round are RN ten Doeschate and Sachin Tendulkar.
writeup later

John Davison

John Davison is one of my favourite cricketers and one who I personally feel close to. Why? It's because on my first playthrough of BLIC07, Davison was the main reason Canada managed to create an upset and lift the 07 WC :p According to the in-game stats - he is Canada's captain, best batsman and best bowler. It's mainly because of this that when I first heard about the draft, he was one of the first names that popped to my mind.

What about reality, however? Like most (except for the people of Victoria), I hadn't even heard about him until the 03 WC. Who was the one scored the fastest century in WC history? Was it Jayasuryia or Gilchrist? Maybe even Boom Boom Afridi? Nope, it was Davison from Canada who smacked the WI bowlers all over the park - scoring an agressive 111 from just 67 deliveries!! (That record was broken in 07 - Hayden scored 101 from 66 against SA).

What did he follow this up with? He scored the third fastest 50 in WC history against the Kiwis (against an attack that was spear-headed by Bond) and ended up being Canada's leading wicket-taker and run-scorer for the tournament. As a right-arm offie - he took 10 wickets at an average of 18 and economy of 4.45. That's impressive, considering the number of 300+ scores the tournament boasted.

In the 07 WC, he again shined with both bat and ball - scoring a violent 50 of 37 against the Kiwis and picking up two wickets in the match.

For being the heart of Canada cricket for the last decade, John Davison makes my WC XI with final stats of:

2003 WC:
Matches: 6
Runs: 226
Batting Average: 37.66
Batting SR: 118.94
HS: 111

Wickets: 10
Bowling Average: 18.70
Bowling SR: 25.2
Econ: 4.45

Overall WC:
Matches: 9
Runs: 307
Batting Average: 34.11
Batting SR: 115.84
100/50: 1/2

Wickets: 12
Bowling Average: 26.41
Bowling SR: 35.5
Econ: 4.46

----------

Papa's WC XI:

1) A Gilchrist (+)
2) J Davison
3)
4) Z Abbas
5) A Ranatunga
6)
7)
8) P Strang
9)
10) D Patel
11)
_________________________________________________________________

It's looking strong - Gilly and Davison to get me off to flyer, Abbas to anchor and Ranatunga to finish off chases. Strang can see through things to the end, as shown by his average.

Only thing missing is the bowling attack. Strang, Davison and Ranatunga between themselves can make up the fifth bowler, and Patel makes an excellent new-ball spinner. Only thing missing is some fast bowlers :p

----------

Average of 52 and 16 sounds impressive but then only 52 runs pulls me back.:p
I would rate Neil Johnson and Heath Streak over Paul Strang any day.

In WC's - I would rate them above Strang as well. But if you look at their overall careers - Strang is, arguably, Zimbabwe's best all-rounder and that is what I was referring to in my opening sentence.

Plus, with all said and done, he still had an average of 52 and 16 :p

You can post your round 6 pick as well now Angry.

And waiting for those write-ups User - they're the best part of the draft; more than the picks themselves :p

Ah yes of course, you're already set - didn't think of that. Although Marvellous Marvan batted at #3 for a while didn't he?

Not in WC's he didn't - always batted at #2.

Gavin Hamilton

The finest middle order batsman from Scotland, he was good and particulary good against strong oppositions.
His contibutions against stronger teams made me pick him in my team. In his brief appearance at the world cup, he played 76* against Pakistan, 63 against Bangladesh, 34 vs Australia, 24* vs West Indies and a 20 against Newzealand. Impressive for a batsman playing for a team like Scotland.
He was also a part time bowler and grabbed 3 wickets.
He won't mind batting at no.8 for us behind Chris Harris and he just strengthens our batting.

Matches: 8
Runs: 228
Average: 32.57
Highest: 76 against Pakistan
Wickets: 3
Catches: 1

Kapil Dev

The finest world cup allrounder and a brilliant finisher, and captain marvel. He led a weak team from a strong nation to a world cup title at the age of just 23 years. He was a natural athlete, his stamina was awesome and he was also a brilliant fielder.

He was India's best pace bowler and their allrounder, their cricketer of the 20th century. His bowling was enough to demolish any batting lineup. And he could hit the bowl at more speed than he could bowl. He was a devil in batting.

People remember him for his hard hitting more than his bowling, though his bowling is more than worth mentioning. He was India's prime bowler in WC and outside it.
He picked up 28 wickets from 26 matches at an average of 31.85 in world cup. He was a frugal bowler having conceded only 3.76 runs an over. He bowled 27 maidens too. His 5/43 against Australia is still fresh among Indian cricket fans.

He was also an accomplished bat, he could hit farther than anybody else and played some very quick cameos down the order for India. Who can forget the 175* against Zimbabwe where he too his team from 9-4 and 17-5 to 268 runs and India ended up winning that match. That was the legendary attack bolstered by him that day. That was the best World Cup Innings ever.

He also played some really quick cameos like:
  • 40 of 27 against Australia in 1983
  • 72* of 58 against NewZealand in 1987
  • 41 off 25 against Zimbabwe in 1987
  • 42 off 33 against South Africa in 1992

Anil Kumble

He had limited opportunities in the 2003 World cup, but managed to do well in the matches he played, also registered his World cup best figure 4/32 against Netherlands.

Anil Kumble is undoubtedly the best spinner India has ever produced. He didn't turn the ball much but still caused trouble to the best of the bests. He was outstanding in his World cup outings.

He was not only an attacking bowler but very economical too, with an outstanding bowling average of just under 23 and miserly economy rate of 4, He often did the job for India.

Sourav Ganguly

A touch over 1000 runs in 21 World Cup matches at a whooping average of 55.88 with a strike rate of 77.50 make Sourav Ganguly a must have for me. He along with Matthew Hayden form one of the very dangerous opening pairs in World Cricket. Ganguly has more runs than any Indian batsman including Tendulkar during the World Cup matches from 1999 to 2007. His average is second best to Dravid during this period. Plus, an inspirational leader.

User2010's World Cup XI

  1. Matthew Hayden
  2. Sourav Ganguly (c)
  3. 3
  4. Kumar Sangakkara (wk)
  5. 5
  6. 6
  7. 7
  8. Heath Streak
  9. John Blain
  10. Shoaib Akhtar
  11. Shane Bond

Nice pick, would have surely picked him if i had any of the top 3 slot left, no point playing him at 4 or below. Hayden and Ganguly certainly a dangerous opening pair.

Yeah, really needed him. Could have gone for Dravid but, thought filling an opening slot was more important.
