Draft time: World Cup history - ALL FINISHED!!

Aww I wanted Michael Holding :(

And nice work with Sir Viv there Papa Smurf. You'll just have to shape up that bowling attack now, it's looking a tad bare :p Make that Indian pick of yours whenever you can.

I thought of going for two other men, one with much more pace, but their strike rates were not as good as Courtney Walsh's in World Cups. Courtney Walsh is West Indies' highest wicket taker in World Cups with 27 wickets from 17 games at an average of 20 and with a strike rate of 35. He was also quite miserly with an economy rate of 3.46. Comparing his World Cup record to his overall record suggests that Courtney Walsh really stepped up to the plate the big stage and really made the ball talk when it mattered most. I think I have a fantastic bowling line up in Imran Khan, Courtney Walsh, Shane Warne, Boyd Rankin and Thomas Odoyo and with the possibility of more bowling options to come.

Glenn Turner ('75, '79, '83- 612 runs, 61 average, 2 hundreds, 2 fifties)
Marvan Atapattu ('99, '03- 521 runs, 43 average, 2 hundreds, 3 fifties)
Navjot Singh Sidhu ('87, '96- 454 runs, 45 average, 6 fifties)
4.
5.
6.
* Imran Khan ('75, '79, '83, '87, '92- 666 runs @ 35, 34 wickets @ 19)
Thomas Odoyo ('96, '99, '03, '07- 361 runs @ 26, 20 wickets @ 34)
Shane Warne ('96, '99- 32 wickets at 19.50)
Boyd Rankin ('07- 12 wickets @ 27)
Courtney Walsh ('87, '96, '99- 27 wickets @ 20)

i'm sure you'll be able to find a worthy replacement. :p

Well it was gonna be Courtney Walsh :p But that said, I'm OVERJOYED that I can now get Brian Lara who to me is the 2nd best West Indian performer in World Cup history behind Viv.

Brian Lara

Ah the Little Prince, one of my favourite batsmen. Doesn't always get mentioned as a great World Cup batsman, but I don't see why. Lara won a number of matches for the West Indies and he's got a great set of overall numbers. I guess he never won a World Cup, but there are plenty of guys who haven't, especially recently. Lara played in 5 World Cups, starting in 1992 and ending in 2007 with a fairly disappointing campaign at age 37. Yet even then he was still the big wicket in the mind of the Windies opponents. Lara's best World Cup moment? Probably the 1996 quarter final vs South Africa where he made 111 from just 94 balls to help the West Indies win. He dominated a 138 run stand with Shiv Chanderpaul, and was particularly fierce on the SA offie Pat Symcox who he thrashed for 22 off one over - 5 4s and a 2.

World Cup stats:
Matches: 34
Runs: 1225
Average: 42.24
Strike Rate: 86.26
High Score: 116 (134) v South Africa, 2003.
100s: 2
50s: 7
4 Man of the Match awards:
  • 88*(101) v Pakistan, 1992.
  • 72 (71) v Zimbabwe, 1992.
  • 111 (94) v South Africa, Quarter Final, 1996.
  • 116 (134) v South Africa, 2003.

I'll stick Lara at #3 even though I was interested to see he batted in a different spot every World Cup. He opened in '92, was #3 in '96, #4 in '99, back to #3 in '03, then down to #5 mostly in '07.

1 David Boon
2 Neil Johnson
3 Brian Lara
4 Aravinda de Silva
5 Mohammad Azharuddin (c)
6
7 Niall O'Brien (wk)
8 Abdul Qadir
9
10
11 Geoff Allott

Hmm that's a juicy top order now :D

Ah, wish Zorax was on now. Could have made my pick. Anyways, sent over the names to Mohit in case I'm not on.

That middle order is adorable. :thumbs

Ramnaresh Sarwan

Matches Played: 14
Runs Scored: 584
Average: 58.40
Strike Rate: 83.54
50s/100s: 3/0

A flamboyant stroke-maker, a major complaint of Sarwan's career has been his failure to make the most of his potential. Well, when it came to World Cups, that wasn't an issue.

He was his best at numbers 4 (innings off 42*(36) against Canada and 47*(44) against SL, the latter when WI fell just 6 runs short of SRL's target for 9 wickets lost) and 5 (230 runs @ 76.66 and a SR of 95.31, 2 fifties, HS of 92). Indeed at number 3 he had 145 runs in 5 innings at an average of 29, not quite good enough.

He was the ideal finisher for the WI over the WCs, with innings such as 92 off 75 against an RSA attack of Pollock/Ntini/Nel/Kallis/Hall (which ended in a losing cause), 91* off 90 against BD, and a rapid 32* off 15 against RSA in 1999, coming in at number 7, which propelled WI to a matchwinning 278. Along with the above mentioned innings against Canada and SL.

Sarwan adds some class and oomph to the lower order, and gives my side that ability to score rapidly which it's missing ATM. He also picked up 2 wickets with his legspin and is a useful fielder, so yea :p

Zorax's World Cup XI
Saeed Anwar (Pak '96, '99 and '03) (915 runs @ 53.82)
Jan-Berrie Burger (Nam '03) (199 @ 33.16)
+Rahul Dravid (Ind '99, '03, and '07) (860 runs @ 61.42, 17 catches, 1 stumping)
*Steve Waugh (Aus '87, '92, '96 and '99) (978 @ 48.9, 27 wickets @ 30.14)
Ramnaresh Sarwan (WI '03 and '07) (584 @ 58.4)
Steve Tikolo (Ken '96, '99, '03, '07) (724 @ 34.47, 14 wickets @ 28.21)
Chaminda Vaas (SL '96, '99, '03 and '07) (49 wickets at 21.22, 219 runs at 21.)
Sir Richard Hadlee (NZ, '75 '79 and '83) (22 wickets @ 19.13, 149 runs @ 16.55)

Clive Lloyd

A Strike rate of nearly 85 during that time can be considered in higher 90s in the modern era. Clive Lloyd has an impressive average of 43.66 in 11 WC innings for 393 runs. Who can forget the century he hit in the 1975 final against Australia off just 85 deliveries! Lloyd joins my team at number 6.

User2010's World Cup XI

  1. Matthew Hayden
  2. Sourav Ganguly (c)
  3. 3
  4. Kumar Sangakkara (wk)
  5. 5
  6. Clive Lloyd
  7. 7
  8. Heath Streak

Andy Roberts

Andy Roberts the deadly West Indian fast bowler, was one of the Star bowler of the West Indian Golden Era. Andy's deadly bouncers with varied pace often fooled the best of the bests. His World cup campaign was very successfull, he was part of all the 3 West Indian Side that reached the finals of the World cup. He saved his best for his last world cup game, The Final against India in 1983 where he picked up 3/32 but unfortunately that didn't help West Indies make it 3 in a row.

Over-all World Cup Stats:
