Draft time: World Cup history - ALL FINISHED!!

Couple of names pop to mind who are unpicked and better quicks than DeFreitas in WC tbh.

pretty sure they wouldn't be able to bat aswell as him, plus he was consistent. he was the second highest wicket taker for england in the '87, '92 and '96 world cup.

I was planning on that Pommie opener, but his record wasn't so epic, and both him and Anwar with Dravid and Waugh to come would lead to really slow starts. A Namibian basher helps liven things up a bit.

I think I'll have batting till 11. Which is always nice.

Didn't know that about Defreitas, that's useful.

Well I think there's only a couple of guys who don't have an opening pair thus far. So either there's going to have to be a reshuffling of the order to fit them in, or there's going to be some pretty good ones in round 11.

Oh and thanks for adding your write-ups Zorax :thumbs

And while I'm here, you were talking about a finisher before. I think you've already got one: Steve Waugh. Up til 1999 he always finished the innings for the Aussies and has quite a few good WC cameos under his belt. You could move Tikolo to 4 and drop Waugh to 6. Depends what you want, to give Waugh more time at the wicket, or have him finish.

Never really thought of Waugh as much of a late-innings hitter.

I was thinking of moving Tikolo up to 4 and going with Sarwan/Waugh/new big hitting batsman.

3 players more to go before I can pick mine, but I don't think my player would go unpicked by those 3 people.

I think i have to pick a finisher and a fast bowler from England and South Africa. As none of them has a great spinner who i can pick. I've to get the spinner from the best of the rest round or my attack would depend upon Sanath for spin

Javagal Srinath

Due to my brilliant planning, I was forced to pick an Indian fast bowler :p No contest really, it was always going to be Srinath. He is the only Indian seamer, who from my memory, has managed to bowl at above 150 kmph's. He was also extremely clever - he was an expert at manipulating the seam to cause mayhem for batsmen with the old ball. So much so, that short-leg was as involved while he was bowling as much the slips. He's also an experienced campaginer - having bowled in 34 matches across 4 WC's.

From those 34 matches, he took 44 tickets at an average of 27 at an economy of 4. He wasn't to shabby with the bat - he could make useful, albeit comical, little cameos at the end. He also balances my team perfectly - with Patel, I've got a spinner who was excellent with the new ball, and with Srinath, I've got a fast bowler who was deadly with the old :thumbs

For being India's fastest and one their greatest fast-bowlers (although he has little competition :p), Javagal Srinath makes my WC XI with final WC stats of:

WC Stats:

Matches: 34
Wickets: 44
Average: 27.81
SR: 38.6
Economy:4.32

----------

Papa's WC XI:

1) A Gilchrist (+)
2) J Davison
3) I Richards (*)
4) Z Abbas
5) A Ranatunga
6)
7)
8) P Strang
9)
10) D Patel
11) J Srinath

----------

Whoa, this draft's moved along nicely. It's my turn again :p

Loving the Beefy pick Jason :thumbs Was definitley my first-choice pick.

----------

I'm definitely getting a spinner, and a good one with that, unless Papa Smurf get's greedy and decides his existing spin attack of Dipak Patel, Viv Richards and John Davidson isn't enough. :p

You forgot about the leggie Paul Strang :p Nah, I've got my eye on a certain Aussie finisher :thumbs

Bob Willis

England's answer to the Garner's, Ambrose's and Walsh's of the world. Charging in at 6'6'', and bowling faster than Trueman, Willis was an intimidating sight. He was also a fighter, having had numerous operations and defying all odds to keep bowling - he gives my attack that gritty determination to succeed. And to add to that? Pure aggression. He hated any batsman he ever bowled to, be it Viv Richards or Abdul Qadir, to their guts. Proof? From his 11 matches in both the 79 and 83 WC, he only went wicket-less once. Good luck mates :thumbs

He was also hard to score off. In WC's, he's got an average below 18 and an ER below 3. Facing hot-head Willis at one end, while gritty, annoying Patel at the other, it's hard to see anyone getting off to a flyer.

And his strongest point? He'll make sure Daryl Harper won't umpire :p

For being England's most aggressive bowler ever, and bowling with pace that would intimate the best of the best, Bob Willis makes my WC XI with final stats of:

WC Stats:

Matches: 11
Wickets: 18
Average: 17.50
SR: 39.3
Econ: 2.66

----------

Papa's WC XI:

1) A Gilchrist (+)
2) J Davison
3) I Richards (*)
4) Z Abbas
5) A Ranatunga
6)
7)
8) P Strang
9) D Patel
10) R Willis
11) J Srinath

Had to re-organise the tail to fit Willis. Since Patel does have a 40 to his name in WC's - he's been promoted! :D And since I know who's getting the No. 6 spot, this is looking a strong XI.

My pick is Kevin Pietersen. He took the World Cup of 2007 by storm and proved why he is held in such high regard, particularly as a limited overs player. In just 9 matches, he scored 444 runs at an average of 56 with 2 centuries and 3 fifties. Needless to say, those runs came at a brisk pace, at a strike rate of 81. In Pietersen, I have someone who can both carry and lift the team as proved vs Australia where he was pretty much England's lone warrior with Bell's wicket falling in the 30th over. I think I now have a very strong top order in Atapattu, Turner, Sidhu and KP.

Glenn Turner ('75, '79, '83- 612 runs @ 61, 2 hundreds, 2 fifties)
Marvan Atapattu ('99, '03- 521 runs @ 43, 2 hundreds, 3 fifties)
Navjot Singh Sidhu ('87, '96- 454 runs @ 45, 6 fifties)
Kevin Pietersen ('07- 444 runs @ 56, 2 hundreds, 3 fifties)
5.
6.
* Imran Khan ('75, '79, '83, '87, '92- 666 runs @ 35, 34 wickets @ 19)
Thomas Odoyo ('96, '99, '03, '07- 361 runs @ 26, 20 wickets @ 34)
Shane Warne ('96, '99- 32 wickets @ 19.50)
Boyd Rankin ('07- 12 wickets @ 27)
Courtney Walsh ('87, '96, '99- 27 wickets @ 20)

Andrew Flintoff

Freddie as we all call him affectionately, was someone who loved the crowd and crowd loved him too. Where lesser cricketers succumb to the pressure, he thrives in it and fed on crowd. And Ashes just overcharges him. Everyone would remember him for his heroics in ashes for decades. He's brutal with the bat down the order and with the ball in his hand he's a menace. In 18 WC matches he has 23 wickets with a economy rate of 3.93. His bowling avg is 23 which is brilliant. With the bat he has played some cameo's down the order. Most notable were his 45 vs aus and 64 vs India.

WC Record
Matches: 18
Runs: 263
Avg: 19
HS: 64
Wickets: 23
Bowling avg: 23
Best: 4/43

Angrypixel's WC XI
1. Sachin Tendulkar
2. Sanath Jayasuriya
3. Mark Waugh
4. Andy Flower(WK)
5. Scott Styris
6.
7. Ryan Ten Doeschate
8. Andrew Flintoff
9. Wasim Akram
10.Joel Garner
11.

Jeez, i bat so deep :p. Akram at no.9 can hit big shots too.

Not sure whether you needed him really. Him at 8, I'm not sure about that too.

Yeah I agree. His batting is like Beefy's - not worth mentioning in WC's. Although, I do remember that he was very economical during the 03 WC, 2-point something if my memory serves me correctly.

Still, an average of 18 for a no.8 isn't that convincing - might be worth swapping him with Akram.

----------

Plus, you've got a lot of seamers. Spinners do exist Angry :p

I know, i'll try to pick one in the last round... And it you look at stats, Freddie's stats are better than Botham in WC. Better batting avg, better highest score, better bowling avg.... :p So it is still a better pick than Sir Ian Botham.

And i needed a finisher at the end of inning. Ten doeschate and Freddie both are big hitters, so they can pull some amazing chases. ;)
And Freddi's death over bowling is unbelievable. Infact Freddie, Akram and Garner all are very good during slog overs. I bet it wont be easy scoring in those overs

----------

I have few Part time spinners Mark Waugh, Sachin and Sanath :p. Scotty can bowl off cutters ;)

----------

Can we trade players :p It would help balancing the sides

No, no trading please. What we've picked, we should stay with it. How will we distinguish between the teams though in the end?

I think you're slightly missing the point, Angry. We are not picking players based on their overall records or reputations but their records and reputations WITHIN World Cups.
