They had no plans to declare they got a message wrong.
Was wondering why Gilly and clarke were laughing so hard and had a shocked look on there faces when someone came out with gloves for gilly and spoke with them.
The guy must have said something like, what are you guys doin
gillys response gettin quick runs fro declaration
guy then says wasnt going to be a declaration u read the signal wrong :)

Think his 50 was off just 40 balls then he went nuts shame he took so long with his first 50 runs :)

He was basically waiting for Clarke to get his 100 hence it took him 40 balls. After he got it you saw what happened.

Just wondering why people are saying drop Joyce? He has a fantastic first class record for a poor team in Middlesex, and is a genuinely talented player. Key on the other hand had a poor season for Kent. It yet again looks like England have got their selection wrong. 4 bowlers worked for England against Pakistan who had a very strong batting lineup, and they've pretty much only used four bowlers in this match.

Still take nothing away from Australia throughout this series, at every key moment in every match they've been by far the better side. Granted the little bits of luck haven't gone Englands way, but the difference is Australia have taken every half chance and created more on top, whilst for England they haven't been able to do so.

In regards to Read v Jones debate, Jones may well look like he should score more runs, but he hasn't. Read has some form as shown by his 50 in the warmup game, and runs against Pakistan. Even if Read had been providing the odd 20-30 with one 50, he would have contributed far more than Jones, and no matter what people keep saying regarding Jones improvement with the gloves, Read is still the better keeper, especially standing up to the spinners.

For Sydney, even though I don't think Dalrymple has what it takes for test cricket, he would be a better selection than the 4th seamer, as without doubt he is more likely to get runs than any of the other bowlers, and probably at the moment than Freddie and Jones.

Edit - Sureshot - The stumping was to be fair to Jones a tough chance, but I have seen wicket keepers take them, and that is supposed to be his job. There was a lot of bounce but he never gathered cleanly, and quite often of the spinner he doesn't.

The skied pull of Hussey however was a poor call from him, it was always going to square leg, Kp had time to amble near it, yet Jones sprinting at full pace only just got anywhere near it.

The seamers spot is an interesting decision, JD adds depth and the MCG normally offers turn and JD isn't that bad and does turn the ball. Also a good fielder. But if we do lose this test (very likely) we should give Saj more experience, because he's improving the more he's playing.

It's not GoJo's batting thats the biggest worry for England (although its close) - it's Flintoff's. When you bat in the top 6 you need to be a good batsmen even if you are a great bowler. Obvious argument is to play an extra batter, drop Flintoff to 7, but the trouble is at the moment he's not fit enough to play as a specialist bowler it seems. If England went for Joyce instead of Mahmood then with only 4 bowlers including Flintoff it would be a real strain for the attack, especially given the quality of Australia's batting. They would most likely be fielding for a long time. Given they need to win Tests to come back in the series, lengthening the batting and weakening bowling depth is not the way to do it. They just need some backbone from their current 6 & 7.

As for Jones, I think he is being played purely on potential and as long as your current competitor is not obviously better than you (I don't think Read's batting is obviously better) - he should be retained for that potential. Australia does it with Watson and Clarke, Clarke especially doesn't have a great record at FC level - but he looks like a quality player who has greater potential than Brad Hodge, for example, even if the stats don't back that up.

A whole load of issues with England during the Ashes has given them problems.

Was hoping for more of a contest and it would be a shame if it all ended within 12 hours of now.

I'll be happy if it's over in the next 12 hours that way I don't have to worry about the English producing a miracle comeback and retaining the Ashes :)

KP...250? Seems a little unrealistic.

Well it's certainly not out of the question. Almost over 500 runs were scored yesterday. It's unlikely it'll happen but I would've waited until later today to declare.

Ponting was in a lose lose, if he declared when you wanted and we drew the test match then the critics would be out saying he should have declared early just like last year. If we lose this test match from here then he will be blamed for not digging a deep enough grave for the English.

I'm baffled that you lot are even contemplating defeat here. The pitch may still be good but there's no way we are going to chase the 500+ with 9 wickets.

Fair point but it's have to be something even more miraculous than that to even draw the game let alone win it.

There won't be a draw unless it rains. I'd say 95% Australia win, 5% England win. We need to bat extremely well, positively and get a bit of luck as well and we will have a chance. If we bat two full days we win, no worry about the draw.

I wish I could be as optimistic as you MUFC but I can just seeing us batting like we did in the second innings at Adelaide; Block everything and wait to get out.

Well now obviously there isn't, had we declared by lunch today it could have been possible as England definitely wouldn't been able to win.

You can't compare them though. The mentality will be different. No matter how far away it is, there is still a target that we are trying to achieve, whereas in the last Test they tried to bat for time, although that was affected by the more aggressive players getting out to poor shots mainly. We still have two days though and the pitch isn't looking too bad, if we get on a roll against the bowlers, anything can happen. Cook and Bell are the key though, if they fold early doors then it's over, but if they put on 150, we'll have our tails up and then anything can happen. The last test to clinch a series is always the most diffilcult to get.
