England in India - Oct to Jan 2012/13

Think this is a better pitch than we're making it look. Slow scoring but the batters are getting themselves out.
Need 350 min imo.

No idea why India are slowing the game down so much when they have to win. Another wicket before the close and they would be right in the driving seat.

Honestly a lot depends on this partnership, whether they get a wicket or two tonight or tomorrow it will be decisive if they are divided much before 250. India do need to polish the rest off, Bresnan and Swann to come but not much else. I would put Swann in next, I suspect the ECB/Cook are way too rigid in their ordering for that to happen.

Decent knock by Root, just what the doctor ordered. We won't know how good an effort this is until India have batted, given India had batted first every other match in the series so far I'd have been tempted to field first if I were Cook. Sure they scored 500 1st Test, but not much over 300 last two times and we won then. The 1st Test was p*ssed away by playing three seamers, no Panesar and then batting like a bunch of complete winkers. 2nd Innings we didn't fare too badly, but 97/7 in reply to 521/8d was awful with.

Just noticed something about Bell's series efforts.

1st innings - 0, 5, 1 = ave 2.00
2nd innings - 22, 28no, ? = ave 50.00

Overall average 14.00

I think 14 is still double his UAE average.
Important restart tomorrow - we don't want to so what we did last match and lose quick wickets.

Not quite, but 8.50 followed by 14.00 hardly suggests he should be as automatic a pick as he is. Throw in Sri Lanka tour and in those last three away series he has a whopping 190 runs for 13 times out at 14.62 average. Add on his last visit to India and that makes 239 runs at 14.94 average in his last four series outside of England against the only decent Asian sides.

What does that quite substantial stat tell you? Not just an odd series or two, but quite a few and more than a dozen innings

Important restart tomorrow - we don't want to so what we did last match and lose quick wickets.

As is quite often the case, crucial first session. If England can bat through it they should have or be on their way to a half decent total. Not sure we can hope for much more than 300 though, Bresnan and Swann can bat a bit but we'd be pushing it to get to 300 let alone much more.

I've said this before but the really worrying thing about bell is how many truely abysmal series he has.

cook has failed to average above 30 for a series 6 times in his career, pietersen 5, Bell's failed 10 times, but it gets more shocking if you set the bar at 20, a diabolical series. KP and Cook have only failed to get above 20 once each in their careers. (KPs weirdly agains bng and Cook in the UAE series) this has happened 6 times to bell.

the slumps of form he enters are much more pronounced than is normal for a decent batsman.

Tried hard to laugh, but it just didn't work out.......:rolleyes

Why did you try to laugh as it was the truth not a joke. Ignorance. :facepalm

does anyone ever actually find anything from cricinfo page 2 funny? really?

india should be more worried about the quality of it's satirists than it's cricketers.

yet you go and read it everyday. Why because you like to waste your time on unfunny things? Cmon don't son't be a sour knob surely you are not that old already :D

I fear Indian has played one less seamer, watching Ishant Sharma bowl.

And that decision to get rid of Alistair Cook was horrendous.

If only Finn was fit for this Test, he would have been impossible to play on this pitch.

I was surprised to see Root over Bairstow, but fair play, he's going well, just hope he keeps going and we can post 300.

Looks like James Harris' move has already paid off as well, with him being called up to the T20 squad.

277/7. It seems that India is slowly but surely losing the grip over the Britishers here. If at all Sachin could still play a part-time medium pacer's role. Bring in the 80 kph seam-up dolleys of Virat Kohli I say! It might just encourage the English batters, Swann in particular to charge the part-timer and we may get a breakthrough.

----------

I have not watched the game but has Dhoni been trying to take advice from Sachin Tendulkar in this test like it is mentioned in today's newspapers? Its rather strange of Dhoni to even take a burden to walk down the pitch to the bowler or spill some encouraging words for the bowler like what you normally expect from a wicket-keeper let alone taking an advice from a senior member about bowling change and all. Is Dhoni finally feeling the sword over his head or has Sachin decided to bid adieu?

Its going to be an innings loss for India and for once I am looking forward to it. This will mean there will be a lot changes in the side.

Additionally, one simply cannot decipher why Ashwin and the supposed 4th spinner are not being given enough overs. Agreed Jadeja was a sawp for Yuvraj, but I doubt if Yuvraj bowled more than 10 overs in any test match.

The over-reliance on part-timers and stupid captaincy is bound to get us down here.

I too think we are heading towards a huge defeat even though the 1st innings of England is yet to come to a close. However, I don't think Jadeja is a part-timer in FC/Test version of cricket. He has 8 four wicket hauls 10 five-fors 2 10 wicket match hauls in FC. He is quite inconsistent but still a lot better bowler than Yuvraj.
