England in Sri Lanka March-April 2011/12

Hmm, i don't think their seamers are up to much... but to be honest I haven't followed Sri Lankan Test matches for a while. They weren't great last year when we played them, however the pitches are very different in Sri Lanka compared to that at Lords. It will be interesting to see how our batsmen approach Herath and the other one (who's name escapes me...) after being turned inside out by Ajmal in the winter.

I wouldn't say that we deserved to bowl them out for less that 250, regardless of the start we made, ok, removing Dilshan and Sangakkara cheaply is a positive, but we wasted our reviews to quickly, and some of the effort in the field was appalling. Panesar in particular, wouldn't have been able to take anything today, let alone the high ones that he tried to take "Village Style". The first one was possibly excusable, the sun was in his eyes and judging by his reactions, he probably saw it late, but the second was inexcusable, a joke compared to the standards we have come to expect from our players.

Hopefully, we can clean up the tail without conceding too many more runs in the morning, it would be a disgrace if we allowed to get to 350... however with Jayawardene well set, he could quite easily steer them to the greater side of 300 with ease.

Had a nap, still can't believe someone so inept in the field is playing international cricket, this isn't the 1970's and this isn't club level cricket. If you can't catch a ball, you're clearly not a sportsman... harsh? I really don't think so.

Not really clever cricket by England today, Sri Lanka should be well pleased that Jayawardene and the last two batting partnerships have added 98/1 and England now have that to knock off as well as the runs that went before.

England now need to knock the last two wickets over quickly and the openers build a platform. If the batting can somehow get us into some kind of lead that would be something clawed back, but I fear the damage is done and England will be as unconvincing here as they were in UAE. Anyone trying to convince themselves this will be different should note that it is the same top seven bar Patel who is making his Test debut.

Well 318 is better then what it should be around 150-180 all out. Jayawardhane who opted to be just a batsman is doing better with the captaincy on his shoulder and its really nice to see the classy Jayawardhane.

England what could have been easy have made task a bit difficult. They need a player like Cook whose concentration is so brilliant since couple of years to score big. It will be a chance for Ian Bell to prove his worth in the side at SC conditions not to mention he is briliiant back home, but who isnt brilliant back home? :p

As I said even though Monty has dropped catches he has looked the better spinner. I remember Haarithan arguing Swann is more like a container and then he picks up wickets, he has gone for 92 runs in the same amount of overs Monty has given 42 runs. He is still better then Swann in SC obviously both havent picked up a wicket :rolleyes

I disagree about Monty. He kept it tighter and Swann will be very disappointed with his E/R but Swann was actually getting turn and looking more threatening.
Impossible to reach judgements after one innings anyway.

I see Puddleduck has flaked out this morning. Obviously not a true England fan ;)

----------

Seeing as Cook scored most our runs in the first warm-up match that's a very big wicket.

And like I've already said - Cook getting out first is never ever ever a good sign for us. England in all sorts of trouble now. :/

Well England have made things more difficult. 44/3 and that also I would say Ian Bell out in the center it well may be 4 wicket down soon now :p

Kevin Pietersen has a huge role now more like Jayawardhane's kind. He has to play a big role. I am confident enough that Prior will be good as he has been recently.

Well the Test just goes from bad to worse for England, from having Sri Lanka 67/4 and 191/7, they concede 137 runs for the last three wickets which isn't far off doubling it, then lose three early wickets with a fragile middle order.

I fully expect Pietersen to get to 30-50 and blow up, he'll look frustratingly good for a while and then get out to a silly shot or a ball he could have played hundred times better.

I suspect UAE has got Sri Lanka three cheap wickets, England playing way too much cricket in the head. Still I expect the same old same old batsmen will fail enough times in this series yet still be selected for the next.

The sentence that all England fans dread: 'Pietersen and Bell will be relied upon here'.

Who knew that Jayawardene possessed such a lethal Jab though? :D

Assuming England don't put on a 150+ partnership they are up against it. Even 150/4 will still leave a lot to do, you simply can't afford three top order failures so early on.

I can see England scraping together something around 200 and having a long hard struggle 2nd innings, anything much of a lead will put Sri Lanka in control and frankly I'd be unconvinced England could win unless they get 50+ runs in front and even then they've lost from a 1st innings lead of 93 runs before against Sri Lanka. That was the same series (06/07?) that England were bowled out for 81 and managed a draw - Cook, Bell, Pietersen and Prior all played in that innings and managed 19 runs between them, Cook made 188 2nd innings.

Pietersen's average in Sri Lanka before this Test was 25.20 from four Tests, HS is 45no.
