England in Sri Lanka March-April 2011/12

As I've said a few times who do you sack them for? You don't learn to play spinners in SC conditions on the county circuit.
You have to do your learning in the middle in tests.

So you're saying England are slow learners? Maybe just maybe it is a natural ability to use your brain, feet, adapt that is needed, not a reputation built on bullying opposition bowlers in English conditions.

Point is England apply the same formula in all series, pick Cook, Strauss, Trott, KP and Bell, regardless of conditions, form etc. Then they won't drop them when in WOEFUL form. How many matches do England have to find form? Not enough to hope they'll work out how to play spin.

As for learning to play spinners in the county circuit, is that not what playing A tours, lions tours or whatever they are called these days, and indeed a good use of spending time in foreign domestic cricket good for? I bet most of our players will only get out of bed in the English off season for an IPL contract

Oh you mean like Jos Butler who performed great for the Lions and then was eaten alive by Ajmal at full international level. These things take time.
Granted they can't take forever ;)

Barmy is spot on. Or James Taylor who had a shocking lions tour in similar conditions. Point is no one has showed they deserve a place either...

I agree that there's needs to be more depth to our batting but when everyone is consistently misfiring it's hard to know where the axe should fall.
Consistency of selection is a good thing. Added to that all our top 5 (apart from Strauss) have performed in the last 12 months.

I don't disagree, but sending out experienced players hoping they'll "be alright on the night" isn't a solution, producing better players of spin should be the ECB aim and England are too comfy playing at home and all through the year the only time they get to play decent spin attacks "at full international level" is when they are touring and it is crunch - and they got crunched. One or two bad performances you can accept, but not four and counting.

And it's not like it's any different to yesteryear, the only times we've won in the subcontinent since 1990 I believe was Pakistan then Sri Lanka in 00/01 and then it was a grind in Pakistan with a late night chase following a dramatic collapse (from about effectively 100/3 to 175 all out) and then a bit of non-walking by Hussain to win a crucial decisive Test in a 2-1 series win.

Maybe a lot more application is needed, England tend to win more when the pitch is flat and they can score quickly. When required to dig in they seem to have no bottle. Was it Craig White in Pakistan who dug in, ground out runs and helped secure the draws before the late chance presented itself to win? Sri Lanka was a narrow win with decisive hundreds lacking walking to aid it.

Haha Stinky yeah good point :p

I'm not being funny, but there is no difference between Monty and Samit bowling at the moment. Both flat and straight.

Which is why England need to pick when to blood players, so when we need an alternative to the usual suspects there is someone with some experience to step in.

Maybe we are going about it all wrong and just need to find ourselves more kolpakkers

I think the main issue is we need to convince De Villiers to move here.

Let's keep perspective though. We've lost one series in a long time, and we haven't even lost this series yet.

I'll link you to my article about the series? ;)
It was White and Thorpe.

If we continue to bat as we have in 2012 so far we will.
