Sven-Goran Eriksson's book: Paul Scholes was 'England's best football player' but was held back by asthma - Telegraph

quote said:
?Scholes was England?s best football player,?? writes Eriksson in his new book published today. ?He had everything except the ability to tackle without earning a yellow card. It was impossible to take the ball from him, and he never mishit a pass. He did not belong on the left flank but that?s where we needed him most. He had played on the left in the qualifying campaign, and sometimes even at Manchester United.??
Eriksson considered playing Scholes in the centre with Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard but felt he lacked the quick wingers to make a 4-3-3 system work at Euro 2004.

Excusing the ashtma revelations i don't buy those tactical reasons 10 years later. ENG always played 4-4-2 or some variant of it under Sven. He simply was not brave enough to drop one of Lamps or Gerrard ATT despite their form for the sake of proper team balance.

That's funny, only last week I was wondering if he could play for us in the future.

Given the options France have in mid-field, an international call-up for him might not be soon at for Le Bleu. But i believe again as the debate with Januzaj recently & Arteta, he can't qualify just due to residency. The FA will have to change something in the home nations agreement.

tbh, I am vehemently opposed to picking players on residency. not because of any sort "you should be from a country to play for it" type stuff. if someone qualifies because they've had longterm residency like being brought up in the country, or have lineage that puts them from that country, that's fine.

but residency is just going to transfer the advantages of money from the big leagues to their national teams. the best foreign players go and play in spain, england, italy and germany (maybe france now with monaco).

doesn't take a genius to work out where it will go if anyone can start playing for another national team on residency, especially when so many players are being bought as teenagers.

it will start getting so they hold off representing their national team, belgium, wales, sweden, norway or whatever, and wait until they can play for germany, england or spain. then the national game will just go the way of club soccer with ludicrously unbalanced sides and only 3-4 potential winners of each competition.

Yep. Scholes is a world renowned player, even by stars such as Iniesta and Xavi as far as I remember - the England team should've been built around him. Instead, we tried to turn him into a winger or something. :facepalm It deserves more than that, but I CBA to post the usual Vader Facepalm. ;)

Cox: English football could learn from Southampton by Michael Cox - ESPN FC

Of Southampton's 6 starters at this stage Lambert, Rodriguez are certain to go to Brazil i'd say.

If all are fit Lallana is essentially battling with Alex Ox for a position.

Shaw wil miss out because Baines, Cole, Gibbs are ahead of him. Same too with Clyne because Johnson & Walker are ahead along with the fact that squad incumbents Jones & Smalling can play full-back.

Ye Sven even picked Scholes on the left in his all-star ENG team that he coached ha :facepalm

This has made me think what is best ENG XI i've seen since i started watching football in EURO 96:

Seaman

G Neville Ferdinand Adams Cole

Ince Scholes Gerrard

Gascoigne

Shearer Rooney

Subs: Martyn, Campbell, Terry, Baines, Beckham, Wilshere, Hargreaves, J Cole, McManaman, Lampard, Owen

They aren't really challenging for the same position. As Hodgson noted in the squad announcement, Rodriguez is wide forward that can play on the left, as Welbeck been doing in ENG 4-2-3-1 formation.

Lallana like the OX, Towsend, Walcott, Lennon, A Johnson, Sterling are mainly wingers. With him & Ox being able to play in the hole also of course.

Rob Green

Emile Heskey Emile Heskey Emile Heskey Emile Heskey

Emile Heskey Emile Heskey Emile Heskey Steve Guppy

Emile Heskey Emile Heskey

but really, I think I'd have Beckham in there, I seem to remember him saving your butts countless times. Adams is a good shout but i'd be too tempted to keep the Campbell/Ferdinand partnership together, that is probably one of the best CB pairings in english history.

I see what you are saying, but i guess i'd have to think about it more personally.

No doubt Beckham at his best pretty good for ENG, but for me i thought about the team balance a lot & i'd prefer if we had mid-fielders where we had players that were top passers, which has always been ENG problem. Thus becks missed out IMO.

Was tempted to keep Campbell/Ferdinand indeed, but Adams was clearly the best CB i ever saw for ENG. Tough choice, ask me this again next week & i'd probably change ha...
