England National football team thread

Not a big fan of this. Same applies to Januzaj. Don't get me wrong I'm a massive fan of seeing young talents making outings in an England jersey, but I think it should be their patriotic duty to play for the country of their birth. Realising now that the prem doesn't exist to help England win the world cup as the thing is the clubs in our top-flight continue to ?produce a product that makes it the most watched sporting competition in the world. And, clearly, part of the globa ?attraction is the cosmopolitan nature of the division, and the FA just suddenly try to dip into this because they see a young-un they think is a hot prospect? Nah. We're doing it wrong. The television revenues alone from the prem apparently amount to about 5.5 mil! ...But the Spaniards and Germans are miles ahead of us in terms of coaching, and this is the problem. It's not that the raw talent isn't there, it's going out of your way and spending the money to nurture it. Ask a kid now who their favourite player is and you'd expect to hear the likes of Gerrard, Rooney, Terry etc..but also your Aguero's, Suarez's and Hazard's. How inspirational would it be for future gens to have our own answers to these? It would not only help England mount at least an outside challenge at the world cup, but also would guarantee the long-term health of the prem too. But at the mo, all this is a long shot.

Jay Rodriguez signed for a minimal fee? Wasn't it 9million?

7 mill apparently - BBC Sport - Jay Rodriguez completes Southampton move from Burnley

Don't disagree with you - but i'm slightly on the fence with this. Why can't England have the best of both world in football like in other English sports?

The perfect scenario would be to have a large base of quality English players & these adopted foreigners like Bentaleb & Januzaj (presuming they want to play for England of course).

If other major countries could let players like Deco, Diego Costa, Marcos Senna, Camoranesi, Pepe, Thiago Motta play for them via a combination of resident rules qualifications - i don't think see why ENG can't do the same.

The home nations rules for player eligibility to play for England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland to me is very complicated. Its not similar to other UK sports & its not even comparable to the United Kingdom residency qualification rules for foreigners.

A foreigner can come here at lets say age 15, live here for 5 years, qualify for british passort, get the passport - but because he didn't have 5 years education before age 18 - he can't play football for England. However he could play cricket for England like Gary Ballance recently has done.

It's been almost fifty(!) years since we won a damn thing and our last semi final was in 1996 - I couldn't care less whether the player comes from Mars if he's world class and helps England win things. Dunno about you guys, but I want to see England lift the World Cup in my lifetime!

Oh do me a favour War

The old injury curse has struck again has it.:facepalm

So we have lost one dimension Walcott and now Johnson the worst defensive right back we have.

How on earth will we get out the group now without these star names :facepalm

Well thank god, you don't get paid to read minds, since i was thinking that.

:lol @ one dimension Walcott. And i'm interested to know who is England's best defensive right-back, if Johnson is the worse.

If I was to pick a defensive right back I would pick Phil Jones or even an inform Micah Richards.

Johnson is defensive liability, ok he is not bad going forward but should be picked as a right back for his defensive abilities first and his attacking qualities secondary.

And Walcott,, please :facepalm

Pace only, final ball is awful, finishing is hit and miss.

These 2 missing will have NO say in our failure to qualify through the group, that will be down to the fact we are cack

:lol Listen chap i never said these two potential absence will have any say in whether ENG qualifies from the WC group or not. So don't get your panties in a twist.

I know you don't rate Walcott, who was Arsenal's leading scorer last season for your own deluded reasons. So i won't re-litigate that discussion, you can take that point of view to your grave.

Disagree that Johnson is a liability defensively, he was for sure up until the 2010 World Cup when Germany throttled us - but in the last few years he has shown much better defensive acumen.

Jones can play right back of course, but i believe that is his weakest position - he is likes to go forward to much. His best positions are at center back of defensive mid-field, where he initially shined at Blackburn Rovers.

Agreed on Richards. Sometimes i think he needs to leave City, in this world cup year & career wise to play @ right-back more often, which he deserves. He clearly ain't gonna start ahead of Zabaleta.

I guess it takes a poor finisher with an awful final ball to score 22 goals in a season and provide 16 assists.

I agree about Johnson though.

The same Walcott that had his own fans booing him no less than 18 months ago..?

Since then he has had one good season, not bad for a player that was gonna be "the next big thing".

Not even come close to reaching his potential
