England National football team thread

^^^^^^^

This is a good point, treat him as all the other players, if you are playing well then you are in the team or squad, if not then you don't get picked, don't make him the exception as let's be honest he is not in the league of Messi like the media try to make us believe

Hopefully it doesn't just end with the trio. I for some reason have this hope(false?) that the English team of the future will be technically sound, don't ask me why because I really don't know.

cleverly to me just seems like the next o'shea/fletcher. useful player that ferguson obviously rates but the idea he's going to be making the united midfield tick in the way that scholes could or anything like is just too far fetched.

Yea Cleverley looks like he would be a more box-to-box mid-fielder at best. Not a future mid-fielder playmaker like Scholes. Shelvey has impressed me more as mid-fielder along with Wilshire who can do that.

But as i've mentioned before. Still think Hodgson would do very well to try and tempt Scholes out of retirement and use Pirlo and the italy 4-1-3-2 or juventus 3-1-4-2 system as the example of how the play. With young guys like Wilshire,Shelvey & Cleverley doing the running for him like what Marchisio/Vidal/De Rossi does for Pirlo for club and country.

Scholes is very likely to be playing in 2013/14 season i believe. His skill along the emergence of the young trio is the cure the England's mid-field woes - instead of just depending on the youngsters.

I think he's similar to Wilshere in that he's pretty much a jack of all trades, an important link in the midfield.

There was a recent article on these two actually:

Actually posted that on the wrong thread...

Not really in my view. Looks more like a player who likes to go forward, but he does have the energy to go from box-to-box.

Hodgson sure of Jenkinson green light

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Celtic), Joe Hart (Manchester City), John Ruddy (Norwich City).

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Steven Caulker (Tottenham Hotspur), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Ryan Shawcross (Stoke City), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).

Midfielders: Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham Hotspur), Leon Osman (Everton), Jonjo Shelvey (Liverpool), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal), Ashley Young (Manchester United).

Forwards: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Daniel Welbeck (Manchester United).

Nice youngish squad.

Fairly sure Cole and Defoe have been rested as senior players who are first team players. But i hope the axing of Lescott, Milner means it may be the last we see of them in England colours.

Jagielka also may loose his place soon with young Chris Smalling around. Although long term, Hodgson has to recall Ferdinand to sure up this defence.

Carrick also needs to watch himself, i thought he may be given a chance to redeem himself after his awful performance vs poland, which highlighted why he doesn't have to skills really to be England's Xavi/Pirlo. He is more of Sergi Busquets type player, but isn't doing himself much favours.

Sort of surprised Carroll has been left out. Osman sort of deserves a call-up i guess based on his league form, but long term i'm not sure what he really could offer England as a mid-field option.

The performances of Ruddy & Forster in recent times sorta shows that the England keeper depth is @ its best since the 90s & early 2000s when David Seaman was keeping out solid keepers like Tim Flowers & Nigel Martyn.

Sterling's in the squad! Now make sure you play him Hodgson, so Jamaica can quit sniffing around...

I think he's more there to be in the squad and get used to training with (and eventually playing with) his future partners like Cleverley. I can't imagine he'll play anymore than 45mins, and really he needs the gametime. Especially with the fact he's suspended for Arsenal.

He needs the two week break, he is nowhere near full fitness and besides, he shouldn't be playing every game for Arsenal either. His injury was due to him being overplayed in the first place, it doesn't help Arsenal or England if he gets injured again.

Anyway at least it's just 45 minutes.

Cleverley looking very average to me this season. I've watched maybe five or six Man Utd games this season so far and he has never stood out. Far too overhyped IMO since he's English and is meant to be the saviour of both England and Man Utd. I don't think he'll amount to the hype at all. Reckon Shelvey will be better than him.
